Jason Gardner - byTonyGale

Almost 55 people attended Après Midi La Rentrée – one of the biggest crowds ever, to hear what Jason Gardner had to say and show. Jason is an Author and photographer, a story-teller using a framework he calls a “Visual Anthropology.” He recently published A Flower in the Mouth, a book of photography and writing about the culture, music and rituals of Carnaval in Pernambuco, Brazil from which he showed many of its colorful photos. His love of the carnival also took him to a festival in Dunkerque, France, the Dominican Republic, Trinidad, Bahamas, New Orleans and Cajun country in Louisiana and Brooklyn, New York – some of which he gave us a taste.

Jason is a founder of Visual Anthropology Press, a book packager dedicated to helping independent authors, photographers, and organizations realize and communicate their vision to their audience. VAP recently produced Scattered Among the Nations, a photography book on remote Jewish communities throughout the world. But he didn’t really boast about any of this. He did show us a bit of his commercial photography work which has appeared in The New York Times, Rolling Stone, Photo District News, New York Magazine, NPR.org, and SPIN Magazine. Clients include Con Edison, HBO, Samsung Corporation, N-Y Historical Society, Ogilvy & Mather, Direct TV, Pfizer, and Human Rights Watch.

Lincoln Center hosted an exhibition of Jason's work at the Out of Doors Festival and the New Orleans Jazz Festival has hosted an exhibition and presentation of his work in 2014. The Brazilian Consulate General sponsored an exhibition of his work in Los Angeles in 2013, as well as exhibits in San Francisco in 2010 and NY in 2007. Other exhibitions have included Rayko Gallery in San Francisco, Uma Nota Festival in Toronto, Art From the Heart, and the Brazilian Endowment for the Arts (BEA). Jason was also a finalist in PDN/National Geographic's “World in Focus” travel photography contest, and featured on the Kodak.com Professional website.

Because Jason divides his time between New York and Paris, he is also a board member of the NY Chapter of The American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP), and here in Paris, is the co-founder of the creative networking community "Amandes Grillées" (“Toasted Almonds”)  to which you are all invited to attend.
