A Paris Renaissance

The Grand Palais was built for the 1900 World’s Fair, and apropos, considering the disaster of today in New Orleans, a 1910 flood of the Seine damaged the foundations, and subsequent changes in Paris’ water table further undermined the stability of the structure. “The Grand Palais is a beacon, literally a lighthouse, projecting the light of French arts and culture throughout the world,” said Culture Minister Renaud Donnedieu de Vabres, as CNN reported last Thursday — you can read the entire article at

My little birdie at the Paris City Hall told me about the many upcoming openings and reopenings in Paris that we should be watching for. This comes synchronistically at a time when there is much conversation about the “renouvellement,” refurbishing, renovation, rehabilitation, rebirth, revival, recovery, recuperation, resurgence and re’ everything of “Nouvelle Orléans” — the great American city we have France and the French to thank so much for that is sadly struggling for dear life. I weep as I write thinking of my home town, its characteristically spirited inhabitants, its rich heritage and its once beautiful 18th-century and anti-bellum homes, many of which have been destroyed. (I got word from my family that their restaurant, Tujague’s, the second oldest in the city located on Decatur street near Jackson Square, is intact, not flooded and planning a reopening. What great news!)

As you can see, there is even more in store for Paris culturally speaking, within the next 16 months! And all that will enhance the already culturally rich city we are so thankful to have.

Walk 1. Left Bank. Begins at St. Germain des Prés and ends at Square Viviani across from Notre Dame.

Walk 2. Ile de la Cité.
Walks 1 and 2 give a first-hand view of the making of modern Paris under Baron Haussmann. The effect of standing on a corner with a photo in hand of 19th century Paris brings home the full impact of the city’s transformation as the Baron’s pickaxe tore down 20,000 houses to make way for the great boulevards and avenues that define Paris today.

Walk 3. The Marais.
Begins in Place des Vosges and explores the unknown history of the Marais south of rue Saint-Antoine from the 1920s to the 1950s. A mixture of anti-Semitism plus a blockheaded approach to urban planning was a disaster to this quarter. The casual stroller has no idea of the dramas played out at virtually every corner.

Walk 4. Paris and Chocolate.
This walk combines Paris history plus visits to three of Paris’s premium chocolate houses. We begin on the grounds of the Louvre and look at how the creation of the Louvre as we know it resulted from a tragic accident. Then we walk to the garden of the Palais Royal to see how one man’s debauchery lead to the creation of that great architectural gem, the covered passageway. From there we walk across the street to two of the most beautiful passageways borne of this debauchery, Passages Vivienne and Colbert. Then up rue Vivienne with a stop at Debauve and Gallais to purchase some chocolate on our way to a wonderful network of passages including Passage des Panoramas, Passage Jouffroy and Passage Verdeaux. Exiting the passages we make our second chocolate stop at Mère de la Famille. A short bus ride to Place de l’Opera takes us into the making of modern Paris and the great history of the Grands Boulevards. We’ll then continue up the boulevard to the famous La Maison du Chocolate, make our final purchase of this food of the gods and repair to a cafe for our tasting, to compare, criticize, rate, and above all enjoy.

This week brings the first quarter Moon in Sagittarius. But as I write Wednesday morning, the Libra Moon is conjunct the familiar planet Venus and the less familiar planet Pallas Athene. Pallas is about reason, justice, negotiation, and most of all, protection. A sense of order begins to prevail over what has been a very chaotic 10 days since Hurricane Katrina devastated an area bigger than Europe in the southeastern United States.

The astrology that led to this event consisted of a number of factors, but two come to mind. First, after two years in Cancer, Saturn went in to Leo back in July for the first time in more than 26 years. The image of Saturn in Leo is that of a dam bursting — historically, this just seems to happen, and often in a big way. The second and perhaps more significant factor was that on the summer solstice, when the Sun entered Cancer on June 22, we had an exact Full Moon. That was a kind of predictor that the season would bring something unusual.

The summer solstice represents a peak of a cycle — the longest days in the Northern Hemisphere. The Full Moon represents the peak of a cycle. Put the two together and the effect is multiplied. The point where the event happened, the first degree of Cancer, has been shown many times to be associated with vast, life-changing events. Two that come to mind right away are the Sept. 11 attacks (there was a New Moon and solar eclipse exactly on the summer solstice in 2001) and the Asian tsunami of Dec. 26 (there was a Full Moon in Cancer very close to the winter solstice of 2004).

Basically, the solstice points are actually predictable in that, when activated by planets, they will nearly always respond to create a worldly event that affects many people. Both tsunami and Hurricane Katrina occurred with the Moon in the sign Cancer, a water sign. Indeed, for both events, the lunar positions were quite close to one another.

Can we do anything about such information in advance? Well, not really — not usually. But we can be psychically and psychologically prepared. But while I am not surprised this happened — I was expecting something big this summer, but I am not in the business of predicting disasters — I am surprised that something so massive happened so soon. I would have guessed it would come in about a year, when Saturn in Leo made an exact opposition to Neptune in Aquarius. But that, apparently, is another story, one that I will get to in the 2006 annual horoscope.

Liking chocolate is one thing. Tasting a variety, comparing them, is a revelatory experience that deepens our own choco appreciation while opening us up to the subtleties and nuances of this food of the gods.
