Dear Parler Paris Reader,

Yesterday all of Paris was out on the streets enjoying the pleasures of May 1st (Labor Day) in the most glorious weather I can remember experiencing in Paris. The line for ice cream at Berthillon on the Ile Saint-Louis ran a mile long and I had my new Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T10 digital camera hung on my wrist ready for action to capture the moment as did hundreds of thousands of others.

Photography has been a passion for a long time now — not so much as the photographer herself, but as one who appreciates the talent for capturing a moment in life from so many varied points of view. I started to collect photography in 1989 when I was introduced to the work of Steven Arnold, a young talented man in Los Angeles who created black and white images in what we termed “Baroque Tableaux”…then died of AIDS when everyone around us seemed to be afflicted, just one month before moving to France in 1994.

Photography filled our home and evidently intuitively influenced my daughter, who is now a passionate photographer herself, if not a collector. Paris is the perfect place for the young (or even aging) photographer’s eye to be sparked, with so much beauty everywhere. Each tiny vision along the cobblestoned paths can seem like a photo-op. No wonder that the “Px3 Photography Competition” (The “Prix de la Photographie, Paris”) emerged, to promote the appreciation of photography, to discover emerging talent, and introduce photographers from around the world to the artistic community of Paris.

It was fortunate to have been asked by the Px3 team to be one of the judges and to have the opportunity to see so much exciting talent come forth to submit their work in the categories of Advertising, Photojournalism, Book, Book Proposals, Fine Art, Nature and Portraiture. The judges were asked to use the same criteria when reviewing the photographs: originality, creativity, excellence of execution, and overall impact. The judging was no easy task — from an exhaustive amount of photographs (thousands o

f online and mailed entries from 53 countries, but my daughter not being one of them) that were submitted, from which most were quite formative works of art. (To see a list of the judges and jury, visit

Just this past Monday, the winners were announced. Congratulations goes to professional photographer, Alex Telfer, winner of the Px3 Photographer of the Year Award and non-professional Photographer, Todd Krainin, winner of the Px3 Best New Talent Award and the cash prize!

To view the entire list of winners, visit: or make your plans to see them for yourself live and in person starting June 29th for two weeks at the “Galerie 13Sévigné.” The gallery directed by Jean-Michel Chaufour and Artistic Director Jeannette Mariani present the work of international artists who “employ innovative and provocative techniques and raise questions about our contemporary society.” (
Galerie 13Sévigné, 13 rue de Sévigné, 75004 Paris,

The First and Second Place Winners in the Professional and Non-Professional Sub-Categories along with the names of the Honorable Mention recipients and the top three Public Choice Subcategory winners will be showcased in the Px3 Book, available this Fall. The Px3 Book will be distributed to galleries, agencies, and bookstores worldwide. (To order a copy of the Px3 Book, please visit

Now, I’ll bet this just whets your appetite to get out your favorite camera and see what talent you have as a photographer…and what better place than Paris! If you don’t already know about the upcoming Ultimate Travel Writer’s Workshop and The Ultimate Travel Photographer’s Workshop — then you should! This coming May 16-19, 2007 writers will learn about how to buy a camera and include photos with their articles…and photographers will learn how to write the sorts of travel articles that go best with their photographs and how, specifically, to sell them.

I’ll be speaking on “How to Write about Restaurants: Lessons I’ve Learned in Paris” as author of the “Insider Paris Guide for Good Value Restaurants” on Thursday, May 17, 5:30 p.m. I look forward to meeting you if you’re one of the participants.

For more details about The Ultimate Travel Writer’s Workshop and The Ultimate Travel Photographer’s Workshop, visit now or contact Sue Wright by phone toll-free at (866) 415-1425 or locally at (831) 274-2779 (Pacific Time) or you can email Sue at

A la prochaine…
