Dear Parler Paris Reader,
From the Sheraton Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco I'm writing you with a head and heart welled up with the results of this past weekend's non-stop bombardment of information impressed on 50 French resident wannabes...
We started Friday afternoon and with no let-up till Sunday evening's closing cocktail, a variety of professionals and experts from France and Europe, San Francisco and Los Angeles came to speak before our conference attendees who were eager to learn how to make the move to France.
Some of our finest experts were there...John Howell who wows the group time and time again with a PowerPoint presentation about all aspects of buying property in France that is not-to-be-missed...Peter Zipper who's dry Germanic wit about keeping our personal finances to ourselves by entrusting them to his Anglo-Irish offshore Austrian bank tickles our ribs no matter how many times we've heard it...Jocelyn Carnegie, our own property consultant, took the group on a property tour of Paris by price per square meter and possible appreciation by arrondissement...John Gosch who is a holder of both a U.S. and German passport and is a past resident of Paris had all the answers to our tax liability questions...Claude Nédérovique whose big smile had every woman in the room falling in love while hearing about how they can earn profits on their rental apartments...Will Cole who reassured everyone medical insurance was easy and inexpensive to obtain...Keith Maillard, a Board Member of the Alliance Française in San Francisco, wh
o outlined the best ways of learning French in as clear and concise English as any of us have ever heard...and surprise guest, Terry Easton, an investment specialist who holds two passports and the deeds to homes all over the world, closed the conference with a wrap-up bang about citizenship in an EU country and how to get cell phones for use here or there.
A highlight of the weekend was Thirza Vallois' amazing two-hour lecture over dinner of Paris Past, Present and Future. More than 150 photos of Paris were prepared in order by arrondissement and as she virtually wound around the "escargot" of the City of Light, she extolled tidbits of historical information we'd never had known otherwise. A chuckle was in order when 45 minutes into the lecture, I warned her that she had only gotten through two arrondissements to which she blurted out in the microphone, "Yes, I know what I'm doing!" Lo and behold, she did, since she explained that the first eight districts deserve much more time in her lecture than the latter ones and I should sit down and be patient...and so I did!
Over cocktails at the end of the three-day intensive seminar, participants turned in their evaluations and comments. One wrote: "Sorry to be so boring by marking everything 'excellent,' but no other word describes all the info and all the contacts provided at the conference. Thank you."
With the unquestionable success of the U.S.-based "Living and Investing in France Conference," we are already planning our next three this year: June in Paris, September in Washington, DC and October in Languedoc-Roussillon. If you think you might like to join us at any of these, drop us an email and we'll be sure to email you as soon as we confirm the dates and locations.
A la prochaine...
P.S. Many thanks to Schuyler Hoffman, Special Projects Manager, who exceeded our expectations as perfect co-host and to our volunteers, Mable Yee, Gayle Uchida and Anne Morton who we couldn't have done what we did without them. As soon as I return to Paris later this week, we'll post more information about the conference results on the Web site...
