Filling Up Your Paris Agenda

You’ve heard me complain before…there is simply so much to do in Paris there isn’t enough time to do it all. This past weekend was a marathon of events, each one vying for your attention and “par chance,” the weather was sunny, warm and stunning for both glorious days. Everyone I know was headed in a different direction…

Saturday, Parler Parlor convened for conversation in the morning and to celebrate “La Rentrée” dined on Quiches with a capital “Q” on the picnic tables at Eurocentres’ patio (where there remains a tower from the wall built by Philippe-Auguste between the 12th and 13th centuries). Co-coordinator and past Director of Berlitz Champs-Elysées, Elisabeth Crochard, outdid herself by bringing a dozen homemade quiches of several varieties and fudgy brownies with nuts. We licked our fingers and basked in the sun.

By the time we cleared the tables and said “à la prochaine fois,” the Techno Parade was already marching down boulevard Saint-Germain on route to place de la Bastille. The music could be heard from blocks away. Laurent Queige, Assistant Directeur of Tourism for the City of Paris and one of the organizers of the event reported to me that there were “30 funny floats, all kinds of electronic music from house to hardcore, and a record number of participants — 400,000 people!!! We were the KINGS of Paris!!” he proclaimed.

Friends dining near the Bastille that evening said it was a mob scene and fabulous street party. Sorry to have missed it — I was dining with friends from Washington, DC in one of my favorite bistrot à vins far from the maddening crowd — Le Sot l’Y Laisse, on rue Alexandre Dumas in the 11th (number 70, 01.40.09.79.20, 30 to 35 euros per person).

Friends who spent Sunday at the 22nd Biennale des Antiquaires at the Carrousel du Louvre were spellbound watching a woman try on a diamond and emerald ring with a price tag of 500,000 euros. While the art and antiques were breathtaking, they were even more impressed with the people-watching. There’s still time to take it in — it’s on till September 28th open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Wednesday till 11 p.m. For more information, visit http://www.biennaledesantiquaires.com/

Then, of course, both days offered almost 200 sites all over the city and hundreds more all over France open to the public free of charge during Les Journées Européennes du Patrimoine. I visited several of the sites in the Marais — those I pass regularly, but never have the opportunity to enter for a peek. The Hôtel de Sully that sits at the southwest corner of Place des Vosges, accessible from its arcade and from a grand entrance on rue de Rivoli was top of my list. I cross the gardens quite often and regularly take in a photo exhibit there in the Centre des Monuments Nationaux, yet had never seen the principal buildings. It dates back to the early 17th-century built by the Minister of Finance and Superintendent of Buildings for Henri IV, Maximilien de Béthune, first Duke of Sully. On display in the garden was a remote-controled mini helicopter equipped with a special digital camera used to photograph from the air in 3D!

The calendar is quickly filling up again. This Wednesday the 22nd at 6:30 p.m. at Patricia Laplante-Collins’ new Paris Network, Eric Francis, international astrologer, author and counselor (http://www.planetwaves.net), who will be speaking on astrology as a tool for professional empowerment, will be using my own chart as an illustration demonstrating the career indicators. I can’t wait to hear what Eric has to predict for me! To reserve contact Patricia at [email protected] or call 01.43.26.12.88 and be sure to let her know Parler Paris sent you.

A la prochaine…
