PARISIANS DO IT AND YOU CAN DO IT, TOO –

Have a great three course meal with wine and coffee in Paris for between $15 and $40 including tax and tip!

Adrian Leeds has been scouting good-value restaurants in Paris for more than ten years. THE Insider Paris Guide for Good Value Restaurants is her on-going effort to bring you secrets to great dining in all the districts of Paris. There are more than 200 good-value restaurants in the guide — and she samples each and every one and only recommends the best.

“Every place we tried from this guide was a winner, most even better than anticipated. You’ll find the price ranges of these restaurants much more reasonable than Patricia Wells’ or Sandra Gustafson’s guides.”

Dear Parler Paris Reader,

You don’t have to be in Paris to enjoy the events surrounding the celebration of the 60th Anniversary of the Liberation of Paris…Euronews is covering it live throughout the day!

It started early this morning and I’m planning on taking part in the most exciting events…the ceremony at the Hôtel de Ville tonight at 6 p.m. and after, the dancing at Place de la Bastille. Tomorrow night, “Is Paris Burning? will be shown on the inflatable screen at the Hôtel de Ville. Scroll down to the calendar for a listing of all the events.

After Monday’s newsletter about these thrilling events, I had some interesting notes from readers about the days of liberation:

“A woman told me in the days following Liberation day, she and the other kids (when it became safe, of course) used to spend part of every day going from street to street looking for the American soldiers. They always had candy for the kids and sometimes a can or two of rations for them to take home.”

“…A woman of a certain age at the table next to me (many, many years my senior) offered some assistance [with the menu] as she spoke English. She was a girl of about age nine on that day that the Allied Army came into Paris. One memory she still couldn’t shake even unto that day was when she gets a “whiff” of wet wool it brings back feelings of her childhood — the same smell that would come from a German uniform.”

This past weekend, I had a drink at the Hemingway Bar at the Hôtel Ritz with friends who regularly stay there (my good fortune!). By coincidence, the next day, the San Francisco Chronicle published an article written by Michael Taylor, a staff writer, titled “Liberating France Hemingway’s Way/Following the Author’s 1944 Reclaiming of the Ritz Hotel.”

He writes, “No, this is not another story about the 60th anniversary of the invasion of Normandy. This is about another 60th anniversary — the anniversary of the day Ernest Hemingway and his private army invaded Paris and liberated the Ritz hotel.” The last part of the story goes that the next day, Hemingway hosted a lunch at the Ritz with several writers of importance at that time that he knew. One of them wrote, “During that lunch, I said I wanted to go watch the victory parade and Hemingway said, ‘What for? You can always see a parade, but you’ll never again lunch at the Ritz on the 26th of August, the day after Paris was liberated.’” To read the article in its entirety, click on
http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/chronicle/archive/2004/08/22/TRGCP8A4VP1.DTL

To have a drink at the Ritz in the style of Hemingway and his cronies, dress semi-formally, be sure to make a reservation in advance by calling 01.43.16.33.65 (open Monday – Saturday 6:30 p.m. to 2 a.m.) and be prepared to spend about 20 Euros or more for a cocktail (well worth the extra bucks for the chance to be in the presence of Hemingway’s spirit).

With that I raise a special toast to the liberation of all occupied lands and peace in every corner of the globe.

A la prochaine…
