Paris Meeting Places

There is no end to places a newly arrived Francophilian Anglophone can meet other Francophilian Anglophones in Paris. Today’s Community Calendar is filled to the brim with a listing of events you can take advantage of, whether you’re a resident or occasional visitor.

“Parler Paris Après Midi” is one of them. Yesterday we welcomed 25 residents and non-residents to the first floor of La Pierre du Marais, where we hold the coffee gathering the second Tuesday of every month. We started “Après Midi” in 2003 as a way of Parler Paris readers getting to know one another in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. It costs nothing and there is no obligation to do anything but have fun! If you’re here in Paris at that time, be sure to put it on your calendar and to read all about it, I report on each and every one with photos and an account of who’s who, so simply visit the site at /parlerparis/apresmidi.html

This is not to be confused with “Parler Parlor” — an easy thing to do. Parler Parlor is the French-English Conversation Group started in 1998 as a way of practicing speaking French and English by both Anglophones and Francophones (with people from more than 50 nationalities). It’s actually how Parler Paris got started — as the communiqué for members of the conversation group. The group meets three times a week in two different locations, so you can come whenever you want and as often as you like (no need to call in advance, just come 5 minutes ahead and on time). Groups of six are formed balancing Anglophones and Francophones and then conversation takes place 45 minutes in one language, 45 minutes in the other. Everyone is on a different level, but that doesn’t matter — the idea is to practice, feel comfortable speaking (at any level) and make friends. It’s free the first time you come, so don’t hesitate, and bring your French friends (we need more French speakers)! Every couple of months, Parler Parlor hosts a party of some sort — another great way to socialize and meet people. For more information, visit http://www.parlerparlor.com

Another great way to meet Francophilian Anglophones is at one of the networking soirées around town. Patricia Laplante-Collins hosts two of them — “Paris Soirées” dinner every Sunday evening and “Paris Network” cocktail every Wednesday evening. At both, usually (but not always) at her Ile Saint-Louis apartment, she features a guest speaker on a variety of different topics, so you get to pick and choose. Patricia has been hosting these events for many years, puts out a delicious buffet of her own creation and is a master at putting interesting people together. She charges a nominal fee for drinks or dinner — well worth the price of admission! You may visit her brand new Web site at http://www.parissoirees.com

Literary readings abound in Paris. Every Monday night, Shakespeare & Co. hosts an event on the first floor of George and Sylvia Whitman’s legendary book store. They normally start at 7 p.m., but get there earlier at 6:30 p.m. to ensure a seat in the intimate space among the books that “aren’t for sale.” While there isn’t a lot of “mingling” going on, it’s a great place to meet your new-found friends for a short, but interesting and educational interlude. For a schedule of events, visit the Web site at http://www.shakespeareco.org/events.htm

This coming week is particularly bountiful with literary events, thanks to the Spring Paris Poetry Workshop May 14 – 19, now in it’s 5th edition. Hosted by poet Cecilia Woloch, this is your opportunity to hear her read along with some of Paris’ finest poets plus the work of the workshop participants.

Monday night May 15th from 7:30 p.m

. to 9:30 p.m., Cecilia Woloch, John Kliphan and Jennifer K. Dick will be reading at The Live Poets Society at the Highlander Pub. Wednesday night May 17th, Patricia Laplante-Collins hosts the poets at “Paris Network” where Cecilia Woloch and Lisa Pasold will be reading. Thursday night May 18th at 7:30 p.m., Shakespeare & Co. hosts a reading by Heather Hartley and the workshop participants. Read the Parler Paris Previews Community Calendar for the details at /parlerparis/calendar.html

And if you want to do something really unusual, come to The Full Moon Picnic, Saturday, May 13 from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. on the Pont des Arts near the middle of the bridge. Everyone brings food and drink to share. It’s a totally open event, so weather permitting, a great place to mingle and meet under the full moon over the Seine.

A la prochaine…

P.S. Late next week I’m headed to the “Big Apple” to celebrate my daughter’s graduation from college and then the following week on to the “Big Easy” for the Living and Investing in France Round Table on May 27th where I will be condensing three days of presentations into an intense four hours! We have registrations from all over the 50 states (much to my amazement!) and participation by author Ruth Mastron, past FPI editor Schuyler Hoffman and GE MoneyBank account managers Philippe Vasseur and Meadda Ang. Dinner will be held at Tujague’s, New Orleans second oldest restaurant and is open to anyone wanting to join us, where Ruth Mastron will be speaking on her favorite topic, “Crossing the Cultural Divide.” For more information and to register before it’s too late, visit /frenchproperty/conference/LIF_NOLA_2006/LIF_NOLA_home.html

P.P.S. While I’m traveling, I’ll still be writing Parler Paris and French Property Insider from the other side of the pond, so you won’t miss a single issue. I’m sure to have tales of cultural crossing woes to tell, going in the other direction!
