Paris Pains and Pleasures

Monday I wrote about the “tears” of a Montbazillac wine and promised you more today about dining at one of my favorite restaurants, Le Domaine de Lintillac. Today, the tears I shed are for the people whose lives are lost or torn apart by the disaster in Louisiana and Mississippi wreaked by Hurricane Katrina as well as the seven immigrants lost in a the fire that devoured a dilapidated house a few blocks away from my Marais apartment.

At the time, I was unaware and not far away, devouring “Rable de lapin” at another of my favorite Paris bistrots.

To all of you who wrote in concern for my family in New Orleans, I am deeply appreciative of your thoughts. Happily, they are safe and well, but fairly certain that their homes are completely underwater — located not far from the 17th Street Canal that broke a levee and spilled into the city — with no idea when or how they will return to them. We stay tuned daily.

Parler Paris reader Jim Jamesson from http://groovyadventures.com reminded me that one thing we can do is “donate a few bucks to help out relief efforts.” He posted this link on his site to go directly to the Red Cross to make your donation: https://www.redcross.org/donate/donation-form.asp I urge you to follow in his lead.

Reader and translator/interpreter Anna Augustin was one to write in concern, but also offered a confession about Montbazillac wine…”Not knowing anything of the value of wine many years ago, I used half a bottle of 20-year-old Montbazillac to make risotto a la Milanese. Well, it was the best risotto anyone at that dinner party had ever tasted.”

I doubt that Le Domaine de Lintillac cooks with their Montbazillac, but they certainly serve it up as the perfect compliment to foie gras. Part-time Marais resident Al Stewart of Business Mentors, Inc. (Management and Career Counseling, http://www.business-mentors.com/) and I shared an absolutely indescribable buttery, sweet and sensual foie gras poêlé for a whopping 12.60 euros. (See Al as guest speaker next Wednesday evening at Paris Networking Cocktail, scroll down for information.)

Like us, you will perhaps walk out shaking your head in disbelief. No other restaurant in Paris can serve this quality at this price. Jean Guillot opened Le Domaine de Lintillac a few years ago and complimented the comfy booths with red check cloths and toasters on the tables. It is filled with young clean-cut French who like traditional cooking and seem to smoke less. With a list of his “produits du terroir” (purchasable at the restaurant) and a menu of traditional Périgourdine specialties, M. Guillot is surprising everyone with incredible quality at a price half of what it should be. (But let’s not tell him for now!)

The most expensive bottle of wine on the menu is half as much less than you’d pay for the least expensive wine on any other restaurant menu, so splurge and it still won’t break the bank. A Kir to start is an unheard of 1.75 Euros! Entrées range in price from 3.35 to 12.60 Euros! Main courses range from 7.40 to 10.15 Euros! Wines range from 7.90 to 26.40 Euros! The prices are ridiculous. But most importantly, you will not be disappointed by the cuisine!…”Le pâté de canard à l’orange,” “La salade de Cabécous chauds,” “Les deux boudins aux chataîgnes” or the “La coupe Corrézinne de la truffe noire.”

Le Domaine de Lintillac has been a favorite listing in the Insider Paris Guide for Good Value Restaurants ever since it opened and now there are two more — a

ll are equally as good! They may not have an inkling about these high praises as I never divulge my intentions as a critic, but should you choose to test out this suggestion, do tell them I’m a fan.

* Viagers: A Win-Win for Buyers and Sellers
By Lynda Sydney

The “viager” or “life annuity” real estate concept is one in which a buyer purchases a property from a seller, but the seller can continue to live in the property. Instead of paying the full value of the property, the buyer only pays part of it, which is called the “bouquet” or down payment, then pays a monthly allowance to the seller. This is known as “le viager occupé” or “occupied life annuity.” It’s as if the seller holds the mortgage, which gives the owner an income while they are living in the property. After the seller’s death, no more allowance is owed. The down payment does not generally exceed one third of the total price of the property, and the amount of the allowance depends upon the total value of the property and the age of the seller(s)…Read On…

PARIS WALKS with Leonard Pitt
September 17, 24 and October 1, 8, 12

Leonard Pitt, author of the bestselling “Promenades dans le Paris Disparu,” and founder of the Berkeley Chocolate Club, will be in Paris for one month, September 15 to October 16, and is now organizing small groups for walks through the city.

Four walks are offered. Each lasts about 3 hours+.

Cost: 60 Euros per person. Maximum 8 to a group. Inquire about group rates.

Leonard’s unique perspective offers a view of Paris in all its beauty and drama that is not available anywhere else. Diane Johnson speaks of his book with praise in her latest book, “Into a Paris Quartier,” and the French press came out with numerous glowing reviews when his book appeared in 2002.

“Leonard is completely legitimate, he’s impregnated with Paris. He sees things that we don’t see.” – Le Figaro

“This American friend knows Paris like the back of his hand and illustrates clearly what the serious stroller would have a hard time deciphering on his own – the history that runs beneath today’s buildings.” – Le Nouvel Observateur

Jana Jagoe took a walk with Leonard in Spring 2005. She writes:

“If you want to truly understand the impact that Napoleon and Haussmann had on Paris the best guide is Leonard Pitt. He not only knows his subject matter but has the actor’s ability that allows you to see the past and the characters who filled it. I’ve lived half the year in Paris for five years and have taken dozens of tours. None compares to Leonard’s. All of the pieces are there. If you have the opportunity, don’t miss this one.”

For information, contact Leonard at mailto:[email protected]
To see his book, go to: http://www.leonardpitt.com

Walk 1. Left Bank. Begins at St. Germain des Prés and ends at Square Viviani across from Notre Dame.

Walk 2. Ile de la Cité.
Walks 1 and 2 give a first-hand view of the making of modern Paris under Baron Haussmann. The effect of standing on a corner with a photo in hand of 19th century Paris brings home the full impact of the city’s transformation as the Baron’s pickaxe tore down 20,000 houses to make way for the great boulevards and avenues that define Paris today.

Walk 3. The Marais.
Begins in Place des Vosges and explores the unknown history of the Marais south of rue Saint-Antoine from the 1920s to the 1950s. A mixture of anti-Semitism plus a blockheaded approach to urban planning was a disaster to this quarter. The casual stroller has no idea of the dramas played out at virtually every corner.

Walk 4. Paris and Chocolate.
This walk combines Paris history plus visits to three of Paris’s premium chocolate houses. We begin on the grounds of the Louvre and look at how the creation of the Louvre as we know it resulted from a tragic accident. Then we walk to the garden of the Palais Royal to see how one man’s debauchery lead to the creation of that great architectural gem, the covered passageway. From there we walk across the street to two of the most beautiful passageways borne of this debauchery, Passages Vivienne and Colbert. Then up rue Vivienne with a stop at Debauve and Gallais to purchase some chocolate on our way to a wonderful network of passages including Passage des Panoramas, Passage Jouffroy and Passage Verdeaux. Exiting the passages we make our second chocolate stop at Mère de la Famille. A short bus ride to Place de l’Opera takes us into the making of modern Paris and the great history of the Grands Boulevards. We’ll then continue up the boulevard to the famous La Maison du Chocolate, make our final purchase of this food of the gods and repair to a cafe for our tasting, to compare, criticize, rate, and above all enjoy.

Wednesday, September 7 at 6:30 to 10:30 p.m.

Our guest will be:
Al Stewart
President and Founder of Business Mentors, Inc
Fort Lauderdale, Atlanta, Paris

Al Stewart is President and founder of Business Mentors, Inc., a career management consulting company, headquartered in Fort Lauderdale, Florida with branch offices in Atlanta, Georgia and Paris, France. His organization provides career management support to both corporations and individuals across multiple industries. As job security became questionable in corporate America, he realized that individuals needed to be more proactive and learn how to take control of their own careers. Since busy professionals had neither the time nor expertise to conduct a thorough review of their skill sets and competencies, Al assembled a team of professionals dedicated to helping clients achieve the maximum of success in their current organizations or to develop strategies for marketing themselves effectively when considering a career transition.

Business Mentors’ clients are taking advantage of executive coaching opportunities, learning methodologies for productive career search campaigns or exploring entrepreneurial opportunities in the US and abroad. One specialized part of his company’s offerings focuses on Americans who want to examine career opportunities in Europe and Asia, and American expatriates and foreign nationals who want to return to the U.S. or seek employment in the U.S. He assists them in packaging themselves for the domain they are targeting, understanding search methodologies used on a country-by-country basis and recognizing cultural innuendos that can contribute to success or failure. As an individual who works in and owns property in France, he understands the challenges inherent with international relocation and culturalization.

Al has an extensive background with Fortune 500 companies in the telecommunications, transportation and career transition industries. He has held management leadership positions in sales and marketing, public relations, human resources, and training/organizational development with industry giants including AT&T, Sprint Communications, Eastern Airlines, and Drake Beam Morin, the world’s leading career transition organization.

He is actively involved in working with corporations to improve the performance of their employees and with individuals to more effectively manage their futures within those corporations. He works with management teams to help them understand the inherent value to the corporation when employees step up and accept responsibility for their own careers. He has spoken at numerous corporate and association events on a variety of career management topics, and he serves as a mentor for Mentium 100, an executive leadership program for women in
business. He has been published on several occasions in the New York Times, Atlanta Journal/Constitution, and Employment Weekly regarding topics ranging from the condition of the job market in corporate America to the needs of America’s “concerned employed.” He has been interviewed for specific segments by the Associated Press, Canadian Broadcasting and the Fox Network on specific workplace issues that employees are facing in this era of change.

Al is fluent in French and Spanish and conversant in Italian. He received a BA in Modern Foreign Languages from Emory University in Atlanta and an M.Ed. in Adult Education & Counseling from Georgia State University, Atlanta.

Astro Paris by Eric Francis
====================

We are approaching an eventful New Moon, exact Saturday Sept. 3 at 8:45 p.m. CED. In the days between now and then, we have the exact opposition of the Sun (in Virgo) and Uranus (the planet of surprises and inventions) in Pisces. This should shake the cosmic tree, particularly with everything else going on astrologically and otherwise.

This would include the approaching conjunction of Venus to Jupiter in Libra, exact Sept. 1, which is to say, in full effect right now. This is an event that is occurring close to the South Node of the Moon, the point in the chart associated with history and the effects of the past. As such, it may be part of an older story, representing a reunion of some kind, or the benefits of past effort. This may include the benefits of a skill, knowledge or wisdom that can be put to judicious use now.

Everything about this conjunction — a meeting of the two “benefic” planets in one of the most positively oriented signs — needs to be handled with a bit of prudence and an attitude of careful observation as events develop over the next two months, which include an eclipse of the Sun in Libra just over a month from today (Oct. 3).

It is just around that point (on Oct. 1) that Mars turns to retrograde motion for about 12 weeks. Mars, now moving slowly, very slowly, through Taurus, is certainly making itself felt in people’s lives, though there are many possible effects and they are not all “negative” Mars remaining in one sign for a long time (as it does once every two years; the last one was Pisces, in the summer of 2003) places great emphasis on that sign. Taurus is the region of wealth, financial security, comfort and self-esteem. This emphasis may come in as questions, reform projects or events with which we collaborate to shape the path of our lives. We are already in the retrograde effect, as Mars now occupies degrees wherein it will be moving backwards. In all, it’s a time to keep complications to a minimum, to keep discussions above the boards, and to keep a handle on where the people around you are coming from.

Last is the New Moon itself. Between now and Saturday, we are in the extreme waning phase of the Moon; this morning was probably the last time the Moon was visible as a think crescent in the predawn sky. The Moon entered Leo on Wednesday morning (for just all time zones except Australia, when it was Wednesday evening). This event still has the Sun in a fairly close opposition to Uranus, so it could be a kind of cosmic trigger of both personal and collective events. Many other aspects suggest that we are in a stable, dependable enough time of history to proceed with some combination of caution and determination.

Happy Birthday, Virgo!
You may finally figure out that your beauty and love are the real riches that you give the world, and if you do, you will be a lot happier. You have learned so much, yet there remains a little piece of self-knowledge that seems to be hiding from you — and if you want to find it, you’re going to need to look, within. You have every reason to give up the voices that have offered their criticism of who you are for so long, and this, too, is a decision you need to make. It starts with the awareness that you owe people nothing, and they owe you nothing.

(This is the short version of the Birthday Report. The full version is available to Planet Waves Weekly subscribers.)

Paris Transforming
Chocolate Awakening
Friday, Saturday, Sunday, August 26, 27, 28 at 8 p.m.

Leonard Pitt, author of “Promenades dans le Paris Disparu,” and founder of the Berkeley Chocolate Club will present a double-header evening made up of his totally new Paris show followed by a chocolate tasting.

Act 1. Pride and Passion – The Histrionics of Paris Urban Design
We usually think of city planning as the result of a process of reason and deliberation. And it is. But in the case of Paris, the layout of much of the city was triggered by raw violent emotion. Come hear the stories and see the images behind Les Halles, the Louvre, Palais Royal, and the Left Bank presented by one of the Bay Area’s most passionate Francophiles.

Act 2: Chocolate Awakening
We’ll begin with a brief overview of the history of chocolate. Then from a selection of five bars of premium chocolate we’ll taste, criticize, rate, and above all enjoy. Liking chocolate is one thing. Tasting a variety, comparing them, is a revelatory experience that deepens our own choco appreciation while opening us up to the subtleties and nuances of this food of the gods.

Where: 1542 Grant St. at Cedar in Berkeley in Leonard’s 17th century French cottage.

Donation $20

Each evening is limited to 20 people. They usually fill fast. Don’t wait. Reservations a must. Contact Leonard Pitt at mailto:[email protected]
