=====================================

Dear Parler Paris Reader,

Last Monday night it was standing room only on the first floor of Shakespeare and Company. The tiny room with one window overlooking the Seine is lined with old books NOT FOR SALE. Every seat was filled while onlookers and listeners crowded the hall and the stairwell.

Every Monday night readings take place there and the rest of the week gets dotted with literary events, as well. Reading their poetry and prose that particular evening were well-published prize-winning authors Kathleen Spivak (American Pulitzer Prize nominee) and Patricia Nolan (Irish member of the Société des Gens de Lettres in Paris). Not a peep was heard as they delivered their poignant words to an adoring crowd.

Poetry is alive and well in Paris as it always was and hopefully always will be. Both published and aspiring poets from the U.S. are descending this coming weekend for the annual Paris Poetry Workshop, led by American poet Cecilia Woloch, begun in 2003 and first hosted by yours truly. Limited to ten eager wordsmiths, the workshop maintains an intimate forum, but opens its doors to the public on a few special occasions you can take advantage of.

Dinner “chez moi” (by invitation only) launches the five-day poetic marathon, but mark your calendar for a few readings the following week by the workshop leaders, well-known Paris poets and workshop students.

Here are a few highlights:

Monday night, April 18th at 8 p.m. join the Live Poet Society at Paris pub, The Highlander (8 rue de Nevers, 6th) to hear Michele Noteboom, James Emmanuel and Sean Street. Tuesday the 19th at WICE (20, boulevard du Montparnasse, 15th), Heather Hartley, Marcia Lebre, Barbara Beck and Cecilia Woloch will be on the podium. Wednesday night (location is to be announced), you can expect to hear more from Kathleen Spivak, Jennifer Dick, Sarah Luczaj, Ellen Hinsey and Cecilia Woloch. The last night of the workshop, Friday the 22nd, the students will be reading their own work (some old favorites as well as new works resulting from the week’s efforts), sponsored by Shakespeare and Co. at Polly Magoo’s, 3-5, rue du Petit Pont, 5th.

Don’t worry, a full calendar of readings will be posted on Wednesday’s Parler Paris Previews Weekly Community Calendar for English-Speaking Paris and for the ongoing schedule at Shakespeare and Company, visit their site at http://www.shakespeareco.org/events.htm

If you can’t be a part of the Paris Poetry Workshop, but still want to improve your writing, you have another opportunity with Kathleen Spivak’s Advanced Writing Workshop-Creative Renewal for Advanced Writers Thursday, May 5th. To reserve your spot, call Kathleen at 01.43.35.10.88 or email [email protected].

Some of us are poets and don’t know it. Woloch playfully took a paragraph from last week’s Parler Paris newsletter and turned it into a poem just by breaking the lines:

HOTEL MURANO

Wow is the word! Not lacking in spunk…
You are greeted by enormous plastic planter pots
four feet tall, ready for trees to be nestled inside.
The lobby is white — stark white —
with touches of silver. Two clover-shaped
leather chairs welcome you at the door.
Lined up along the corridor are four
silver and black sculptures reminiscent
of Fred Flinstone’s pet, Dino. In fact, Fred
and his alter ego, George Jetson,
are everywhere…from the futuristically shaped
chairs, to the black-lit corridors, to the purple,

orange and red spotted furry-walled elevator,
to the riverbed stone bathroom floors, to the egg-
shaped toilets, tubs and wash basins in the suites,
to the 130 different kinds of vodka that line
the mirrored bar (the coolest drinking hole in town!).

A la prochaine…
