Sleepless In Paris

Get in a good nap Saturday afternoon so that you can see the sun come up over the Seine Sunday morning along with the rest of the Parisians celebrating “La Nuit Blanche” for the 3rd time.

Another one of Bertrand Delanoë’s creative cultural events to become an instant success, La Nuit Blanche this coming Saturday, October 2nd taking place all through the night until breakfast the next morning, proves to be another smashing hit.

This week’s “A Nous Paris” found on the stands inside the Métro stations, has a special edition on what’s on that evening and if you’re brave enough to maneuver the complicated Web site (go to http://www.paris.fr/, then click on the link and a new window will open. It’s a work of art, but extremely user unfriendly), you’ll get a complete listing of all the events going on all night long.

There are eight welcome points around the city for information manned by 100 “ambassadors,” 170 “guides” to assist at the exhibitions and sites and 80 aboard four bus lines operating specially that night plus 20 assisting pedestrian tour-takers and another 20 assisting the rollerbladers and bikers.

The four buses will operate from midnight till 5:30 a.m. (Northeast, West, Left Bank and South), Line 14 of the Métro will run from 1 a.m. to 5:30 a.m. and 18 lines of Noctambus will continue as always.

For pedestrians, there are two tour routes to take part in that walk from 8:30 p.m. to midnight: one in the North part of Paris departing from Square Rameau on rue Richelieu, and the other in the South departing from Place de l’Hôtel de Ville facing avenue Victoria.

Bikers can pedal from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. if they like on 1000 bikes offered FREE by the city! Pick up your wheels at either 9 place de l’Hôtel de Ville or the Gare de l’Est on the “parvis” facing boulevard Strasbourg.

Three swimming pools will be open all night long, too: Saint-Germain (6th), Château-Landon (10th) and Aspirant-Dunand (14th).

Events are divided into three segments: Paris Nord, Centre and Sud, but you may prefer to choose your favorite events by type: visual splendor, literary, art, music, clubbing…there’s something for everyone to do and enjoy.

If you’re like me, at a “ripe old age,” you’ll poop out by about 1 a.m. or so…but still, it proves to be a very exciting evening and let’s face it, Paris is most beautiful at night. They don’t call it the “City of Light” for nothing.

SPECIAL NOTICE TO ALL READERS:

Today’s newsletter is the last one I’ll be writing and sending under the publishing umbrella of International Living…but it means very little change for YOU.

You will continue to get Parler Paris just as you always have…however, as of Friday’s issue, Parler Paris will be mailed from a different list host, so don’t be surprised to see a new sender name in your inbox (and let’s hope it gets through your spam control without a glitch!). If you don’t receive it, don’t hesitate to write me at [email protected]

Stay tuned for Friday’s newsletter when Parler Paris is REBORN — there are lots of new insights to be shared with you. And please be sure to write me from now on at [email protected] Please eliminate all InternationalLiving.com email addresses for me from your address book — as they will unlikely be received.

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all those I worked with at International Living during this three-year association…particularly Kathleen Peddicord, publisher; her husband and CFO, Lief Simon and of course, founder and friend, Bill Bonner, from whom you may continue to hear via their own mailings. Also, don’t be surprised if we collaborate on some future projects…

A la prochaine…

P.S. Next Wednesday night I’ll be speaking at Paris Network on “How I Made My Dream to Live in France Come True.” Come for drinks, hors d’oeuvres and secrets on how to survive in the City of Light. Scroll down for the details.

THE AMERICAN LIBRARY IN PARIS PRESENTS EVENINGS WITH AN AUTHOR

Sponsored by the Annenberg Foundation
Wednesday, October 6, 2004, 8:00 p.m. (20h)

Alan Furst
A Special Library Benefit Cocktail

Just 15 euros (under 18: 10 euros); Sponsor: 25 euros

Alan Furst will read from his brand-new novel Dark Voyage-and will take questions from the audience. To celebrate this extraordinary occasion, the Friends of the American Library in Paris will host a cocktail in his honor and as a fundraiser for the Library.
The Daily Telegraph says “Furst is the most immaculate of writers, one of those superlative craftsmen who never seem to produce a jarring sentence or a clumsy piece of dialogue. His exquisitely wrought spy thrillers, set in the thirties and forties, have set a new standard for the genre.”

It isn’t often we have the opportunity to meet and speak with a writer who creates a reading experience with “espionage oozing from every shadow.” Bring your friends!
