Summer Cinema Under the Paris Moon

Summer in Paris is a cinema-buff’s paradise.

For the fourth year, the city of Paris celebrates a festival of film that began last night with a public showing of “Les Triplettes de Belleville” de Sylvain Chomet (France, 2003) on the “parvis” in front of the Hôtel de Ville. “Paris Cinéma” continues through July 11th…just another one of those “little” cultural events launched by the Delanoë administration (like “La Nuit Blanche” and “Paris Plage”) for which we are so thankful.

In more than 20 different locations (cinemas and in the open air), films will be shown at the entry price of a whopping 4€ (3€ for children under 12). When you purchase a Paris Cinéma Fidelity Card of 5 tickets, you’ll even get one free. (For all of you who wonder what happens to all that French tax collected, now you know…some of it goes to increasing the level of cultural awareness of everyone, not just those who can afford it.)

They describe this year’s festival as “vitaminée, écléctique et audacieuse” — “vitaminized” (we don’t have this word, but you get the idea, right?), eclectic and daring. It pays homage to the illustrious French filmmakers such as Claude Chabrol and Rossy de Palma as well as the young Korean film industry, the masters of Italian horror films and Robert Wise, the producer/director, well known for “West Side Story” and “Star Trek.”

For English-speakers, there is long list of English-language films as well as “unforgettable French films” with English subtitles. For those who love the open air, but missed last night’s showing, mark July 7th for a showing of “Bricolo Inventeur” (“He Done His Best”) of 1927 with American comic geniuses, Charley Bowers and H.L. Muller, at 10 p.m. at Square Louise Michel on the Butte Montmartre near Sacré-Cœur.

Pick up a brochure at any city hall, but you can also get more information by visiting the site at http://www.pariscinema.org/ or http://www.pariscinema.org/fr/pratique1/pratiqueeng1.html in English (!) or consulting the Paris Cinéma Centre (open daily from Friday, June 23 to Tuesday, July 11 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at 4, place Saint-Germain-des-Prés in the 6th), calling 01.42.84.17.17, or emailing mailto:[email protected].

If this isn’t enough for all you cinema buffs, this is the 6th year The Forum des Images will be presenting “Le Cinéma au Clair de Lune” — films shown on an inflatable screen in the light of the moon all over Paris from August 2nd to 20th. Each year I plan at least one picnic with friends to see one of the great films. One of my favorites was seeing “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” from 1957 with Gina Lollobrigida and Anthony Quinn with the real Notre Dame as a backdrop! (Visit http://www.forumdesimages.net/fr/article.php?arti_id=158) for a complete listing of films.)

And, for the 16th year, at Parc de la Villette from July 4th to August 13th, the lawns at the park are meant for picnicking and film-watching during the “Festival du Cinema en Plein Air.” This year’s theme is “Des bêtes et des hommes…” (“Men and Animals”). “Out of Africa” by Sydney Pollack and “The Birds” by Alfred Hitchcock are both on the roster along with “The Horse Whisper” by Robert Redford and “A Fish Named Wanda” by Charles Crichton. (For the official guide and a complete listing, visit http://www.cinema.arbo.com/.)

Guess I can see what we’ll be doing this season…sittin’ at the cinema or languishing under the moon while our favorite heroes and heroines grace the silver screen. Not a bad way to spend the Summer, “n’est-ce pas?”

A la prochaine…
