Dear Parler Paris Reader, My local butcher ordered a 5+ kilo turkey to be delivered on Thursday, which is about 11 pounds. That’s about as big as a French turkey comes; lightweight by U.S. standards considering the size — as large as a Butterball that weighs twice that. French turkeys are thinner, have darker meat, are juicier and more tender. Don’t tell Butterball I said that, but it’s true. We all drool at the thought of carving into it later this week. Beaujolais Nouveau hit the bars and restaurants with its usual fanfair last Thursday evening. Bistrot à Vins owner Jacques Mélac was busier than a “one-armed paper hanger” at his vine-covered zinc bar in the 11th pouring up the white wine disguised as a red that few people really like but drink in the spirit of the occasion. We were some of them, but one glass was enough to boost our moods in the rainy evening. Dinner, not far away at 127, rue de la Roquette, in a railroad car-of-a-bistrot with a red painted facade and hand-written blackboard menus, Le Bouchon de la Roquette, was a far greater pleasure. Owner Jean-Pascal Lefevre has known for more than ten years how to serve a well-prepared traditional French fare to a very local clientele. This is the kind of corner you can call your own over and over again. Meanwhile, the Paris Photo Fair was packing them in all day long every day and evening at the Carrousel du Louvre to visit the 106 photo exhibitors comprised of galleries and publishers from all over the world. It was clear I’m not the only person in the world who reveres and admires photography. While naturally classic photo-journalist and fashion photography from years past by seasoned masters such as Weegee, Irving Penn, Horst P. Horst, Arnold Newman, André Kertesz, etc., feel comfortable, safe and secure like the womb, new and innovative works by Asian and European artists stole the show. I dreamed of having more money and more walls on which to display them all. Member of the prestigious Magnum Photo Agency, Elliott Erwitt, who was born in Paris, but was naturalized as an American when his Russian parents emigrated in 1939, and who became famous for images that capture life’s humorous side, was at the Magnum stand signing his newly released book, “Personal Best.” Lots of beautiful photography books were on sale — at the Taschen stand, no tome weighed less than 5 kilos. David LaChapelle’s new book, “Heaven to Hell,” that I purchased for my daughter (his biggest fan) and carried home on the Métro with difficulty reminded me of the turkey I would be hauling home later this week. The weekend ended in the sound of music from the high-speed agile fingers on the ivories of Willis Delony, a national and international jazz and classical pianist, conductor, composer and teacher from Louisiana. The free concert was organized and hosted by local American jazz pianist, composer and teacher, Joe Makholm, at the Atelier de la Main d’Or in the 11th. Makholm’s own composition, “Three Reflections,” was played by Delony who concluded the evening with three audience-induced encores. The energy radiating from Delony’s digits raised the ceiling of the already two-story-high event space! The weekend was punctuated by Ségolène Royal’s winning the French Socialist Party’s nomination for president in the 2007 elections. It always strikes me funny that a socialist bears such a “royalist” name and still get elected! However, just imagine…a woman president of France along side a gay mayor of Paris! Conservatives must be rolling their eyes about now. A la prochaine…
