To Be At Ease In The Big Easy

For all of America and even for Americans living abroad — and just about anywhere abroad – tomorrow is a very special day that has become the most important non-secular holiday — Thanksgiving.

I’m not sure it’s acquired this illustrious title by virtue of its centering around eating great food or by the football games that play all afternoon while holiday gift shopping is planned, but it is without a doubt a time when families gather to spend quality time together.

It can be a time when Expats feel the loneliest, knowing their loved-ones are communing while they are trying to reproduce the same spirit, with friends, foreign-raised turkeys, imported cranberry sauce and mom’s favorite recipes.

I did this every year in my own Paris apartment, my closest buddies around my dining room table, a French turkey roasting in the oven (they really are divine!), each person contributing something special to the meal such as sweet potato casserole or pumpkin pie. Every single Thanksgiving in Paris has been memorable, loads of fun and absolutely delicious.

This year, for the first time since moving to France, I have chosen to spend the holiday where I grew up in “The Big Easy”(New Orleans) with all of my siblings, my 87-year-old mother, a few select nieces, nephews and cousins. The weather is unseasonably warm, rain has been predicted for every day, but didn’t materialize until storming overnight and the eating marathon hasn’t stopped (I still contend that you can’t eat better anywhere in the world than New Orleans…but don’t tell the French!). New Orleans is even more beautiful than I remember it — full of old-world character and charm, filled with a spirit unlike any other American city.

Still, I’m going through painful culture shock as I always do, realizing how much my point of view has changed after living in France for so long. The cars are huge and have the strangest shapes — almost retro in form. Oprah Winfrey has lost so much weight she is unrecognizable as the robust woman I can remember, with teeth too white, skin too taught and hair too Caucasian. Stores are even larger, product aisles even more overflowing, customer service even friendlier, check-out even more automated and faster. Restaurant servings are larger, air-conditioning set even colder, noise levels higher. Friends are fatter, patriotism even more popular, sex even more taboo.

I don’t fit in — not with my slender figure, form-fitting black clothing, lowered tone of voice and conservationist habits. And I wonder if I will ever want to return to live in the land of opportunity, where celebrating the cornucopia of plenty is the most important holiday of the year, in spite of the fact that my family is left behind me.

Never say never…never say forever…and know that you can never look back or go back…never in the same way.

A la prochaine…

Thick Description is pleased to announce My Father’s Journey, a one-woman show conceived and performed by Sylvie Braitman, with accompaniment by Jim Rebhan, accordion, and Annette Brodovski, violin. My Father’s Journey will be performed Thursday, December 2 and Saturday, December 4 at 8pm, and Sunday, December 5 at 5pm. All performances will be at the Thick House, 1695 18th Street on Potrero Hill in San Francisco. Tickets are $18.00; for reservations, please call 415-401-8081. My Father’s Journey is a song-telling concert about survival, destiny, and our century. The one-woman show is based on the oral history of Ms. Braitman ‘s father, his twisting adventure through Eastern Europe during the rise of Nazism and World War II, and his complex relationship with his children. The
90 minute piece dramatically weaves stories with instrumental and vocal music while weaving together the story of father and daughter, revealing the Holocaust’s effect on Ms. Braitman as her father’s life unfolds in time with her own:

Democrats Abroad

LET YOUR SENATORS KNOW HOW DEMOCRATS ABROAD FEEL ABOUT THE NOMINATION OF ALBERTO GONZALES!

JOIN US IN THE WORK THAT NEEDS TO BE DONE TO BECOME A MORE EFFECTIVE PARTY!

We Have Only Begun to Fight
We worked hard to elect John Kerry. We contributed significantly to one of the highest voter turnouts in recent US electoral history. Now, however, we must learn from our right-wing Republican opponents, who, when LBJ crushed Goldwater in 1964, went to work to build the movement that, now, forty years of unrelenting effort later, seems so strong. We must listen to the voice of the late Paul Wellstone and “Mobilize! Energize! Organize!” We must, above all, learn the lesson both teach us, that serious, successful politics isn¹t just what we do in the heat of a campaign season. It is what we continue to do as we fight to achieve a country that truly embodies hope, for its citizens, and, yes, for the world as a whole.
That “world as a whole” is especially vital for Democrats Abroad. We know that America’s image abroad affects not only our lives and global prosperity, but also America’s success or failure in securing the cooperation on which fighting terror and terror’s allies, poverty, corruption, and environmental degradation depend. We have a special duty, then, to bring that perspective home starting with our representatives in Congress.
The leadership of Democrats Abroad recommends that every member of Democrats Abroad becomes familiar with the wonderful Website called Congress.org (http://www.congress.org/congressorg/home/), where you can find all of the information you need to contact your Senators and Representative by phone, post, telegrams, fax, or e-mail. And don¹t just become familiar‹get in the habit of (1) using this site and (2) letting us know when you¹ve used it, to help us better mobilize and organize Democrats Abroad campaigns to make our voices from abroad effective. Start now!

OPPOSE THE NOMINATION OF ALBERTO GONZALES AS ATTORNEY GENERAL

Contact your Senators and let them know that, as an American citizen who lives overseas you are particularly concerned about the appointment as Attorney General of a man with the following positions:

*The Geneva Convention: he calls it “quaint”
*Presidential powers: no habeas corpus for anyone whom the President arbitrarily designates an enemy combatant
*Off-shoring imprisonment: approving use of Guantanamo Bay as a place to isolate prisoners from US legal protections
*Apparent ap

proval of torture: his office of Presidential Counsel approved its use

These positions not only pose major threats to civil rights inside the USA. They are also a brutal affront to what Thomas Jefferson called “the decent respect of all mankind,” blackening America’s image throughout the civilized world, further weakening the soft power needed to defeat terrorism and spread democracy throughout the global community.

STEP 1: Start by learning more. See, for example, the following:

“Loyal to a Fault? The Senate should hold Alberto Gonzales accountable for his bad legal advice” by Philip Carter http://slate.msn.com/id/2109495
“A Record of Injustice” by Christy Harvey, Judd Legum and Jonathan Baskin http://www.alternet.org/rights/20475
“Attorney General Nominee Advocates Loss of Freedom, Individual Rights” Staff and Wire Reports http://www.capitalhillblue.com/artman/publish/printer_5683.shtml
*These sources are particularly useful because they contain links to numerous other sources as well. For those who want even more, DA Sweden Chair Brand DeLange has prepared a comprehensive list of on-line resources concerning Gonzales’ record.

STEP 2: Compose your own message. Personal is more powerful.
STEP 3: Use an effective medium. Capitol Hill staffers tell us that Congressional opinions are more likely to be effected by: (1) phone calls, (2) personal letters, (3) telegrams, (4) faxes, and (5) e-mails-in that order. E-mail is great, but it doesn’t show the same level of interest as calls, letters, or telegrams.
STEP 4: Get back to us and tell us what you said and what you did. Send your feedback to [email protected].

ACT NOW! GET IN THE HABIT! WE HAVE WORK TO DO!

POST-ELECTION BLUES….AND REDS
HOW DID IT HAPPEN AND WHAT WILL IT MEAN?
Democrats both at home and overseas are asking two questions about the last election: How did it happen, and what can we expect from “W” ‘s second term? Democrats from the world over discussed the first at the DPCA meeting in Amsterdam on November 6 to 8, even as we began preparing for the electoral battles to come. Many of you, including four Young Democrats who worked the campaign directly in Maine and Florida, will be exchanging feed back at our Town Meeting on Sunday, December 5 at John Morris’s.
First Tuesday proposes to continue the debate, but from two new perspectives:

Michael Mosher, Chair of the Department of Political Sciences and Professor at the University of Oklahoma, will give us the view from the heartland and talk about voters we can win back
Guillaume Parmentier, Director for the Americas at IFRI (Institut Français des Relations Internationales), and the leading French expert on the United States, will look to the future: What can we expect from the re-elected Bush Administration and the Congress in the next four years, particularly in foreign policy?
Rey Riemer, will moderate the meeting and get the discussion launched. He and Connie Borde will also comment on future action of Democrats Abroad.

From December 18th, 2004 to January 2nd, 2005 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
A host of merry-go-rounds spring up all over Paris for the festive season, offering entertainment for all the family. The Manèges de Noël, with traditional carved horses and other animals, whirl around on the squares of the central arrondissements of the French capital, including Place de l’Hôtel de Ville, Place Saint-Sulpice and the Square du Temple.
Though the merry-go-rounds are designed primarily for children’s entertainment, a trip on one of these gaudy manèges is also a romantic treat for all who love the City of Light.
