Warm Winter for Riviera Writers

Volume III, Issue 49

10-7-21-Open-House-Tour-Nice-5.56

Sure, Christmas and Chanukah are only a couple days away, and Paris is cold, gray, foggy and behaving in typical December fashion…but we dream of the Riviera, sun, sand, surf and a more casual lifestyle.
In today’s French Property Insider, we take an inside look at the Côte d’Azur, “a 120-mile stretch of coastline that meanders north-eastwards from the purple rocks of the Esterel in the west to the border town of Menton in the east,” as described by Ted Jones in his newest book, “The French Riviera: A Literary Guide for Travellers.” “Even it’s name is a writer’s creation. In 1887, Stephen Liégeard, French novelist, playwright and poet, wrote a book about a journey along the coast of Provence. Although the book is long forgotten, his title, La Côte d’Azur — the Azur Coast — has lived on to spawn a million glossy brochures.”
As a place to hang your hat, spread your beach blanket, decorate with flowers…? Mais oui! Hundreds of thousands have found it the perfect alternative to Paris urban living, including tens of thousands of North Americans. Ted Jones discovered the myriad of writers who found this alluring part of France a magnet for over 700 years, from Dante the Florentine poet to Jean-Paul Sartre, the existentialist. He adds, “When Simone de Beauvoir wrote of ‘looking forward to sun, silence, and time to work,’ she may well have been speaking for all the writers of the Côte d’Azur, from Alcott to Zola, from Hyères to eternity.”
So, while you’re opening gifts and snuggling in front of the fire, think about the sunny, sexy Côte d’Azur and how it might be the perfect spot on the planet to spend many of the rest of your days.
Merry Christmas, Happy Chanukah, Happy Holidays…A bientôt…

Are you making regular currency transfers?
If your answ
er to the question above was ‘Y
es’, Moneycorp thought you may be interested to learn more about their Regular Payments Abroad service.

A recent survey undertaken by Moneycorp showed that following their clients initial purchase, owners of overseas properties continued to exchange an average of £10,000 per annum for a whole range of reasons including:
* pension transferal from the US
* managing an overseas mortgage
* further overseas investments
* projects on a property such as building a swimming pool etc.

Those who used a specialist currency broker such as Moneycorp for their overseas mortgage/pension transfers rather than their main stream bank, saved on average $300 to $400 per annum on transfer fees alone. In addition, clients saw further savings as Moneycorp charges no commission (most banks charge 2%) and by fixing their exchange rate for up to 24 months their clients knew exactly how much would be debited from their bank account each month.
Whatever your currency needs, from one off transactions to regular month payments, Moneycorp makes the currency aspect of any transaction as simple, cost effective and stress free as possible.
Moneycorp is the only currency broker to have eliminated all bank receipt charges. As a result they can guarantee that clients will not have to pay any receipt charges when they send funds abroad.*

Living on the Riviera
By Adrian Leeds

Last week, a beautiful blue covered book arrived in my mailbox with an imprint of a painting by Raoul Dufy in Provençal colors, broad strokes and sketchy lines denoting the city we often say is “nice” — Nice. Yes, Nice is nice. The author, Ted Jones, writes “Nice is the capital city — and cradle — of the Riviera.” And in his new book, “The French Riviera: A Literary Guide for Travellers,” he notes that French poet Jean Lorrain wrote, “The Riviera is the land of legend where a bad reputation has done no one any harm.”

While Paris is cold and gray, although beautifully lit for the holiday season, our colleague and friend Pascal Fonquernie of Parismarais.com, basks in the sun on the terrace of his pied-à-terre in Roquebrune, just outside the city of Monaco. Each day he writes to make us green with envy that while we were donning our heavy winter coats, he is bronzing in the warmth. He wrote, “Cities such as Hyères — boring and too far from the glamour; Cannes — don’t know; Antibes — an old city, but Nice is nice; the cheapest is Cap Ferrat; unaffordable — Monaco — double the price than Paris due to taxes (I could write lots about Monaco…; Menton — old baroque city just before you arrive at Italy; most beautiful is Eze village; also Roquebrune-Cap Martin, Beaulieu sur Mer…ah, I could write books about it…!”
Many have, including Ted Jones, who takes you from town to town via the writers who penned their thoughts while basking in its sun and enjoying its casual lifestyle. His book features Hyères, Cannes, Antibes, Nice, Cap Ferrat, Monaco and Menton, but there are so many other great spots to consider…Fréjus, Juan les Pins, Villefranche, St. Tropez, Saint-Raphael…
Property in these areas aren’t as pricey as Paris and well worth the investment. The Notaires de France publish the most current statistics from April 2004 through March 2005 at http://www.immoprix.com/. The price per square meter for an apartment is about one-half of what you expect to pay in Paris, except in some of the most desirable cities.

So, if you want double the sun, double the temperature at half the price, along the Mediterranean could easily be the answer for a spot ‘in the sun, with silence, and time to work’ (or rest.)

JEAN-PAUL SARTRE: Existential Hero
By Ted Jones

Jean-Paul Sartre, the French novelist, playwright and philosopher, was born in Paris a hundred years ago, on June 21, 1905. He was best known for his advocacy of Existentialism – a much-debated philosophy proclaiming total freedom of the individual human being within the constraints of rationality. As a passionate believer in universal freedom at any cost, he was able to apply the principle to many causes, whether to justify rebel activities in Algeria and Cuba or to explain his refusal to accept the Nobel Prize for Literature when he was awarded it in 1964. His rebellion against authority and traditional organizations made him an ideal icon for the French ‘baby-boom’ generation in their protest marches in the spring of 1968.
The names of Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir, the French feminist novelist and essayist, are often said in one breath. They met at university when he was 24, and — despite extra-marital dalliances by both — remained together until Sartre’s death at 75. From their student days onwards, although they enjoyed separate careers, they often worked together, and they traveled extensively in the United States, Central America, and throughout Europe.
The couple decided early in their relationship that, since neither wanted children, marriage would be unnecessary. A serial womanizer, Sartre thoughtfully warned her from the outset that, married or not, he would get involved with other women – and he kept his word. But de Beauvoir seemed to accept the situation philosophically, saying that, since she had agreed the principle, it would be unreasonable of her not to accept the fact. She herself had a four-year affair with the American novelist Nelson Algren.
Sartre’s first published work – a short story – appeared when he was 17, and he remained a prolific writer — of novels, plays, stories, essays, literary criticism, biography and screenplays — for over 60 years.
He was conscripted into the French army in 1939 and was taken prisoner when the Germans invaded France ten months later. But within a year he had won his release by feigning blindness, and, with fellow intellectuals, formed a group called ‘Socialism and Liberty’, which would meet in the cafés of the boulevard Montparnasse and discuss, among other things, Resistance.
Sartre and de Beauvoir were lifelong film buffs and lovers of jazz from its first stirrings as 1920s Dixieland, through the big bands of the 1920s and 1930s, to the bebop era of the 1940s and 1950s. They were passionate skiers, and would spend most Christmas vacations in Chamonix in the Savoy Alps.
They discovered the French Riviera in the late 1930s, and worked — and played — there for almost four decades. During the Occupation, the couple, like many French writers, went south to the Free Zone to avoid the constraints of German censorship. They retained especially strong links with Antibes, where they stayed with friends and former students. It was probably de Beauvoir who best summed up its attraction — for them and for generations of writers: ‘I am just leaving for Antibes. I am dreaming of sun, silence, and time to work.’
The two writers parted for the summer of 1949, de Beauvoir to North Africa with Algren, and Sartre to the Caribbean, visiting Fidel Castro and Ernest Hemingway in Cuba. But they went to the Côte d’Azur together in the autumn, and the following year Sartre returned there to take part in a
documenta
ry on the life of André Gide. A photograph shows the two giants of modern French literature, aged 81 and 45 respectively, sitting like bookends in adjacent armchairs, each seemingly unaware of the other’s presence.

Sartre and de Beauvoir made a nostalgic pilgrimage to the Riviera in 1971. It was their last visit to the coast: a month later Sartre had a stroke, and although he continued to work and protest – against Castro’s imprisonment of a Cuban for homosexuality; against American and Soviet aggression in Vietnam and Afghanistan respectively; against French participation in the Moscow Olympic Games — he was a sick man. He died in hospital in Paris on April 15, 1980.
Having been fortunate enough to have lived into the media age, Sartre was probably the most widely read philosophical writer in history. And despite — or possibly because of – his frequent and bitter conflicts with authority, he was almost certainly the most influential. Fifty thousand people turned out to accompany his funeral cortège, and he got more press coverage than de Gaulle. One journalist called the event ‘the closing demonstration of 1968’.
Sartre’s modest grave in the Montparnasse cemetery bears no epitaph. He might have been content with Karl Marx’s tribute to Rousseau: ‘he never accepted the least compromise with established power’.

Tête-à Tête
You are cordially invited to a Presentation-Discussion
of : The Lives and Loves of Simone de Beauvoir & Jean-Paul Sartre with the author, Hazel Rowley

THURSDAY, JANUARY 12th 2006 at 7 p.m.
VILLAGE VOICE BOOKSHOP
6 rue Princesse
75006 PARIS
Tél: 01 46 33 36 47

‘A sympathetic, clear eyed, scrupulously non-judgmental exploration of the intimate lives of two of the most celebrated intellectuals of the mid-twentieth century…’
‘Tête-à-Tête has just about everything: sex, philosophy, politics, and the world’s most unconventional love story. Hard as I tried, I could not put it down.’ Barbara Ehrenreich
‘Drawing from a trove of unpublished letters and interviews, Rowley brings fresh psychological insight to both her subjects. As this remarkably intimate account makes it clear, Beauvoir was painfully aware of the deep compromises she was making in the name of freedom and love.’ Megan O’Grady, Vogue
‘Yet, Hazel Rowley says, I don’t know anybody who left more of a legacy to the world…. The fact, she continues, that they were writers to the core, the way they turned life into stories… ultimately, that’s inspiring.’
‘Readers will turn these pages… mesmerized.’ Michael Dirda, The Washington Post
Hazel Rowley is the author of two other ground-breaking biographies of Christina Stead and of Richard Wright. She was born in Australia and now lives in New York.

Nice is Nice
http://www.gayot.com
The Côte d’Azur was “discovered” at the end of the 19th century as an illustrious, warm winter wonderland for the privileged classes of British, Swiss and Russian societies. Climatically favored even in the winter, Nice was praised for its therapeutic benefits which drew foreigners searching for the dry, warm weather necessary to cure what was ailing them. Enchanted by this undiscovered paradise, the same families returned year after year until an affluent community of royalty, courtesans and artists flourished in the prosperous atmosphere of Belle Epoque Nice.
Today, Nice is a spectacular fusion of French and Italian culture, customs and cooking. Even the language, le Niçois or Nissart, spoken almost exclusively by the local population up until the beginning of the 20th century, is a hybrid of Italian — the official language of Nice from the 16th century until 1860, and French — the official language thereafter. This amalgam of cultures is also responsible for the wonderfully robust and flavorful Niçois cooking, based largely on olive oil, tomatoes, garlic, basil and other local produce.
Easily accessible from abroad thanks to its international airport, Nice can also be reached by TGV from Paris’ Gare de Lyon in five and a half hours. Night trains are also an option for visitors disposing of more time. In light of the profusion of budget airlines such as Air Lib and Easy Jet, round-trip fares between Paris and Nice can be had for competitive prices, sometimes for much less than a train ticket. Accommodations are plentiful but reservations are strongly recommended all year round so as not to waste time searching for vacancies. This is especially true in the summer months when millions of tourists flock to Nice’s sun-baked shores.
Depending on the season you visit, you are almost certain to witness a festival, parade or other spectacular event that transforms the city into a veritable extravaganza. From Carnival in February to the Jazz Festival in July, there is always an attraction to entertain locals and visitors alike. A schedule of events is availa
ble on the C
ity Hall of Nice website. Yet the most captivating spectacle of all, with its splendid coastline and passionate people, is that of Nice itself.

WHY WE CHOSE NEW ORLEANS
There are more reasons than we can count for why we chose to hold this important event in the U.S. city that came close to total destruction this past year.
First of all, we love New Orleans. It’s Adrian Leeds’ home town with a heritage that dates back to the Spaniards who settled there to the French who turned it into the country’s most cultured and fun-filled city. It’s one of the most visited U.S. cities, is host to such important events as the Mardi Gras and the Jazz Festival, has centuries of history not to mention great food, music and art.
The devastation it suffered has touched the hearts of people worldwide. We want to show our complete support to rebuild New Orleans to even better heights by bringing back tourism to the city’s economy as quickly as possible. This is one vital way to achieve that goal. We urge you to come and join forces with us in these efforts!
