By the time you read this, the results of the U.S. midterm elections will be in and you'll either be pleased or dismayed, depending on the outcome. It doesn't matter if you live in the U.S. or are expatriate, once an American, always an American. That means that you can never quite escape what happens in the U.S. politically, even if you escaped from it for that reason.
Since Donald Trump was elected, the "fallout" (that's what I call it) has been overwhelming. The more things he does or says that offend open-minded Americans, the busier we get with people moving here for work or play. Our business increases with every move he makes for which I am not complaining...but I've never voted with my pocketbook and never will.
The point is that I hope you voted from wherever you are, inside the U.S. or outside of the U.S. by absentee ballot. I was so anxious to vote, that I may have sent in the ballot twice, just to be sure. Without casting a vote, you have no voice, and no voice, means you can't complain about the outcome. In fact, that's what happened to the elections in 2016. About 30 percent of Americans who were eligible to vote didn't — a higher percentage than those who voted for either Trump or Clinton. Half of the non-voters were non-white and two-thirds were under the age of 50. More than half of those earned less than $30,000 a year. (Source: Pew Research Center) According to the Washington Post, "Those who didn’t vote are as responsible for the outcome of the election as those who did."
Jon Stewart - Late Show with Stephen Colbert
Comedian, writer, producer, director, political commentator, actor, Jon Stewart who is the former host of The Daily Show, where Stephen Colbert got his start, said to Colbert during a Late Show appearance, “The presidency is supposed to age the president, not the public.” Not only has the President's Fiscal Year 2019 budget going to adversely affect people with mental health and substance use disorders (see mentalhealthamerica.net/blog/), but mental illness in the U.S. is on the rise. They call it "Trump Trauma" or the New PTSD: Post-Trump Stress Disorder. Can you imagine? A mental disorder named after the President of the United States?
This is serious stuff, but if you want to get a good laugh, in spite of the trauma this presidency has caused you, have a look at Randy Rainbow's latest video. Yes, that's his real name and he lives up to it. Comedian, actor, writer, singer, host and clearly an Internet sensation, his viral comedy videos make living through the Trump administration a bit more palatable and a little less stressful.
Here in Paris, a group of Expats and non-Expats will strut their anti-Trump sentiments at a rally this coming Sunday 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Place de la République:
On November 11, 2018, France will commemorate the 100th anniversary of Armistice Day — the end of World War I — an event at which Trump will be Macron's honored guest. Extending such an invitation to the man who is waging war against us all is an insult that we refuse to accept.
P.S. As you read this, I'll be taping our 35th House Hunters International episode, happily keeping my mind off Trump. For those of you interested in "falling out" to France, contact me to learn more about my personal consultations to help you make the move! See adrianleeds.com/ for more information.
P.P.S. I am offering personal one-on-one two-hour consultations in the central Los Angeles area November 20th, 21st, 23rd and 24th at a dollar rate (a 15% savings from the normal euro fee). If you are interested in booking one, please email email@example.com.
