L’Après Midi with Bubbly and La Soirée with Wine
Wednesday, June 9, 2004
Right now, a farmhouse…a château…even a Paris pied-à-terre costs less than you may think. Armed with France the Owner’s Manual you will be able to take advantage of the good values that exist in France right now.
France the Owner’s Manual is packed with maps, property listings, details on cost of living, health care, schooling, employment, residency rules…plus contacts for help buying property, obtaining a mortgage, renting, renovating, starting a business and traveling in this glorious country.
If you are even thinking of living, retiring or doing business in France you need this manual.
Dear Parler Paris Reader,
The warmth is bringing everyone out to the streets and sidewalk cafés and had a definite affect on the healthy turn-out we had at La Pierre du Marais yesterday afternoon at Parler Paris Après Midi. The waitress was promoting new bubbly refreshing drinks with lemon and mint in off-beat colors of greenish-yellow and pale blue and served up fresh made iced tea for us Americans who asked for it.
Our next Après Midi is July 13th, the last for the summer, as we will be taking off for what we expect will be another hot August this year and then gearing up for La Rentrée in September. If you want to read all about what you might have missed yesterday and see their smiling faces, be sure to visit /parlerparis/apresmidi.html for the complete report.
In the past few weeks I discovered a Bistrot à Vins that fits the concept of the Insider Paris Guide for Good Value Restaurants to a tee — a mom-pop spot in the 11th, well off-the-beaten-track and well worth a detour — Le Sot l’y Laisse. I was so impressed with my first dining experience that a week later I dragged another group of friends there. Here’s the review from the guide (I just uploaded the new Summer version!):
After dining at Le Sot l’y Laisse, we stopped at Bistrot à Vins Jacques Melac for a plateau de fromages and another glass of wine. Jacques’ grapevines are in full foliage and small bunches of grapes have formed. this is another great spot where only “les vrais Parisiens” venture to spend your Summer evenings, tasting formidable wines and dining on great French cuisine.I’m certainly looking forward to more.
A la prochaine…
P.S. For restaurant closings during the Summer, the best idea I can offer you is NOT to take your chances by just showing up — the small independent restaurants may close at any time for any length of time, so call first and hope for the best!

New Yorker Eddie will be celebrating a highly personal day of independence in Paris…. apart from being an acclaimed comedian in America he is also very highly rated by almost every single comedian in the English speaking world. The fact that he books comedians for the David Letterman show in no way influences the opinion of his peers.

SPECIAL COCKTAILS, DINNER AND VIRTUAL TOUR OF PARIS PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE WITH INTERNATIONALLY ACCLAIMED AUTHOR AND HISTORIAN THIRZA VALLOIS
Part of the Working and Living in France Conference
Chez Jenny: “An authentic Brasserie with a soul, a style and a history.”
Thirza Vallois, author of “Around and About Paris,” Volumes I, II and III and “Romantic Paris,” has credentials a mile long and an ability to see history in layers that never ceases to spellbind her audiences during her brilliant lectures. She has agreed give the participants of the Working and Living in France Conference a complete tour of Paris — of all 20 arrondissements — Thirza’s personal account of the past, present and future of Paris.
At the colonial exhibition in 1930, Robert Jenny had a kiosk where he sold produce from his region: salt-pickled cabbage choucroute, sausages and beer. Appreciating Parisian life and noting that the fine Alsatian products attracted the Parisians, this native of Strasbourg sought to set up business in the capital. He found just the right place not far from the place de la République, at number 39 boulevard du Temple. This was the hall where the former Victor ball was held. Did he know that this address had once been that of a Russian restaurant in 1906, then a Belgian restaurant in 1914 ?
The quarter was lively, even though it no longer deserved the reputation of «Crime Boulevard» that it had had in the 18th century, when the plays billed at the many theatres in the area mainly drew inspiration from
the items in the news.
Cocktails, Dinner and Virtual Tour of Paris by Thirza Vallois at Chez Jenny is included in the conference price for participants but you and your friends are welcome to join us for $75 each all inclusive.
*Expect the evening to last till at least 11 p.m.
