Friday, the Round Table team met up over drinks at the 7th Annual Hamster Race at Good Friend’s at the corner of St. Ann and “Dauphine” streets in the “Vieux Carré.” Yes, a Hamster Race! The hamsters peddled their “mini-vans” down the wooden track while the sideline spectators placed bets and screamed for their favorites to win while sipping on anything alcoholic or not. This could only happen in New Orleans, where there is any excuse for a party! This one was also a fundraising event for an art school in the “Marigny” (the neighborhood just east of the French Quarter). Saturday, I felt right at home in the big dining room at Tujague’s Restaurant where we greeted a large and enthusiastic crowd of folks wanting to learn more about living and investing in France. The 300-year old building, even though it’s primarily of Spanish architecture, has the tall doors, wood shutters and wrought iron balconies so reminiscent of Paris. Several of those who came were New Orleanians seeking refuge and a new beginning after losing their homes to Katrina, but most of the participants had come from far and wide to spend a few hours with us…and that’s all it really was. We worked hard to pare down the information to the essence and to cram three days of presentations into a five-hour overview — although we all felt we had hardly scratched the surface. Everyone realized the five-hour Round Table with John Howell, Ruth Mastron, Philippe Vasseur, Meadda Ang and myself presenting, was one of those big bargains they were lucky to have taken advantage of. The comments from the participants included:
Dinner at Tujague’s was a particular treat — all five courses of Creole delight while everyone was getting to know each other. My niece, Allison Gorlin, who is an accomplished New Orleans pastry chef, artist, photographer (you see her photos of Paris from time to time) and ukulele player, serenaded us with a few local tunes, including “When the Saints Go Marchin’ In” and “Jambalaya”(“On the Bayou”). Sunday a few of us took the Grayline Bus Tour of Katrina devastation. In my opinion, every American, if not every person, should take the tour and see it for themselves. The bus rides close to the home where I grew up on “Fleur de Lis Drive” one block from the 17th Street levee that broke flooding all of Lakeview. I had walked through it a few days earlier to my horror and shock. On the tour, when we passed the “West End,” where the seafood restaurants we frequented ever since I was a child and saw they were totally gone, nothing left but their pilings, I broke down in tears. In the afternoon, my daughter, Erica and I visited the Erzulies Authentic Voudou shop at 807 Royal Street, owned by Anna Parmelee, one of the Round Table participants. The scents from the oils and soaps are overpowering and addictive the moment you enter. Anna hopes to bring her voudou business to France…and I agree!…We could certainly use a few Love Spells, Voodoo Spells, Ancient Egyptian Love Spells, Voodoo Magic, Witchcraft Love Spells and Psychic Readings from Nouvelle Orléans to help find solutions to our personal situations!
