“More Than Two Million = “”Un Petit Village”””

You’ve heard it a million times. Paris, even with its more than 2 million residents, is “un petit village.” The longer I’m here, the smaller it gets. Monday was a big day for small worlds.

My daughter, who was sent to Paris by her London firm (Trident Communications) to write articles about the Paris Air Show at Le Bourget, was ecstatic when she had the occasion to take this photo of M. Chirac and his entourage, as he looked squarely at her and then gave her a big wink. On occasions like this, Paris feels like un petit village.

The show has been open since Monday for the trade, but opens officially to the public on Friday and runs through Sunday. Reporter Stanley Holmes of Business Week called it “Another Turbulent Paris Air Show” as “Greater cooperation between U.S. and European outfits is on display, but not enough to calm the subsidies spat between Boeing and Airbus.” International tensions and leadership turmoil must have had Jacques in a tumultuous position! Monday morning, the leaders and members of the Paris Office du Tourism et des Congrès met for their annual Assemblée Générale at the beautiful gilded and historic Théatre de l’Athenée-Louis Jouvet. I thought it interesting from a cultural perspective that the director of the theater should have been given quite a bit of time to speak about the history of the building, once again illustrating the French passion for their “patrimoine.”

Good news is that American tourism is up almost 10%, but there is no question that 2000 was the golden year and that it’s the goal to re-achieve. It was fascinating to learn that Americans spend more per day on meals and transportation than any other nationality, while the Japanese hold the record for spending on accommodations and shopping (so, no surprise that I should see a huge group of Japanese dining today under the stained-glass dome at Le Printemps!). The British spend the most on tourist attractions while the French spend the most on necessary purchases (whatever that means…drugs?). The Italians are the tightfisted tourists — they spend the least, by far…half as much as the Japanese!

New from the bureau is the “Passeport Paris” city pass which, for 5 euros, gives you an entrée and a discount to 59 different sponsors’ services. These can be obtained at any of the city’s welcome stations. Then watch them pop up over the next many months.

That afternoon, a successful turnout of about 80 residents of the 3rd arrondissement attended a public meeting at the Mairie of the 3rd about the new initiative by the “Parisiens Associés” to create more Bed and Breakfasts in Paris under a rating system they call “Hôtes Qualité Paris.” Our illustrious Mayor Pierre Aidenbaum declared the 3rd the pilot district supporting the initiative wholeheartedly…and for several reasons: First, to be the first to act on new innovative ideas. (It’s one of the things I love most about living in this “quartier.”) Second, he wants to share with visitors the secret corners (courtyards, houses, etc.) of this beautiful historic district. Third, he wants to show the world that the French are friendly, welcoming and open-minded to people from all communities and fourth, create a real one-on-one human contact between the Parisians and people of other places and cultures.

Attending functions of this kind puts a resident in immediate contact with the city’s leaders. It’s yet another venue to realize that Paris is just “un petit village,” and that is certainly true for this arrondissement where the administration is not only very active, but very much in communication with its inhabitants. Big difference! Parler Parlor is a structured way of practicing speaking both French and English — 45 minutes in French, 45 minutes in English in groups of six to eight, each in its own private room. We meet three times a week, we never know who is going to show up so the groups are always different, it’s fun and it really works! Good news for Americans is that the euro is down against the dollar — now at 1.2 dollars to the euro, it’s getting more and more affordable to travel here, buy here, live here. Yeah!

Dubbed the “King of Ragtime” by his music publisher, Scott Joplin (1868-1917) was a formally educated musician whose popular piano rags inspired him to go on to composition on a larger, far more developed scale and conception. His second opera, Treemonisha, an example of his most serious work, was published in 1911 at his own expense.

The story of a young woman who defies the facts of her social and racial background and works her way up the social ladder, trading on education and non-violence, 40 years before Mahatma Gandhi and 60 years before Martin Luther King. Needless to say that Scott Joplin’s chances of raising money to produce his masterpiece were anywhere from modest to remote.

The New York Times praised Treemonisha as gently imbued with ragtime, aspiring “to genuine operatic richness.”

Noel Riley Fitch is an internationally-recognised biographer of expatriates in Paris. A JUST PEACE FOR THE PALESTINIANS

The Democratic Party has been as inactive on ideas for peace between Israelis and Palestinians as has the Bush administration. Clearly, the issue is a thorny one. Our June event is an effort to approach the issue from a viewpoint of what would constitute a fair peace for the Palestinians while not compromising Israel’s security. It is not intended as Israel vs. Palestine, but Israel and Palestine.

Michel Warschawski, President of the Israel-Palestinian Alternative Information Center (AIC) of Jerusalem

Warschawski is an Israeli author and tireless activist for a lasting peace between Israelis and Palestinians. In 1982, during the Israel invasion of Lebanon, he was one of the founders of Yesh Gvul (“There is a Limit”), a movement of soldiers and reserve officers against the war and occupation. He has published numerous works on the issue, available in French.

Ann Fagan Ginger Human Rights and Peace Lawyer
Challenging U.S. Human Rights since 9/11

Ann Fagan Ginger is a distinguished Human Rights lawyer based in San Francisco at the Meiklejohn Civil Liberties Institute in Berkeley. She is an expert in civil liberties law and peace law under the statutes of the United States and the United Nations. She has argued and won before the U.S. Supreme Court.

Ann has just completed editing a book concerning the 30 types of human rights violations committed by the U.S. Government since 9/11 (didn’t we used to be the good guys?).

The book includes a discussion of the 9/11 Commission and the efforts by certain American cities and states to oppose the Patriot Act. Ann is in France to present a report to the International Association of Democratic Lawyers Congress meeting in Paris.

She has been received enthusiastically at speaking events ranging from journalists at Stanford University to representatives of the UN Human Rights Committee.

Primary and/or special elections for state offices will be coming up in all of the states prior to the general congressional election in November 2006.

As the requirements for voting in these elections as well as the possible tax liabilities are not clear, we suggest that you call the following toll free number in Washington at the FVAP, the Federal Voting Assistance Program, 0800-917-304 or write to [email protected] to learn the specific requirements and rules for your individual state.

The states and the FVAP often do not give us very much lead time before an election so that if you inform yourself now, you will know whether or not you are eligible to vote in state elections.

JUNE EVENTS AT THE AMERICAN HOSPITAL OF PARIS TARGET OBESITY

The American Hospital of Paris steps up to the plate in the struggle against obesity. The next free community event on June 23 will provide new insights into diabetes and obesity relating to women’s health.

According to the American Obesity Association, approximately 30% of children 6 to 10 years of age are overweight and 15% are obese, higher than ever before. Childhood obesity can lead to diabetes, hypertension and other chronic diseases which were once only prevalent among adults.

June 23rd at 4:00 p.m.

The Hospital’s Foundation is sponsoring the Eleventh Annual Iris Cantor Women’s Health Lecture, Robin Goland, M.D., a nationally recognized endocrinologist and leading expert on diabetes and obesity, will give a lecture titled, Weigh Less! Live Longer! New Ideas in the Treatment of Diabetes and Obesity.

Dr. Goland is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons and an Associate Attending Physician at NewYork Presbyterian Hospital The lecture will be delivered in English with simultaneous translation into French. A cocktail reception will follow.

The lecture is free and seating is limited, and advance reservations are required.
