New Orleans or Nice: Which is Cheaper? Which is Nicer?
Volume XII, Issue 26
I wondered if I wasn’t the only one who noticed the similarities? In fact, I know other New Orleanians who live here in Nice and they do agree with me — Nice feels like “Noo Awlins” by the sea (instead of by the river).
By coincidence, a fel
low New Orleanian who also owns an apartment in Nice (but is currently for sale), sent me a very interesting Web site comparing the cost of living in Nice with New Orleans.
Here are some of the facts, good or bad, according to the Numbeo.com:
* Rent prices in Nice are 16.66% lower than in New Orleans
* Property prices in central Nice are 165.93% more expensive than in New Orleans
* Restaurant prices in Nice are 50.02% higher than in New Orleans
* Groceries prices in Nice are 53.21% higher than in New Orleans
* Public transportation in Nice is 63.31% more expensive unless you purchase a monthly pass which makes it 25.77% less expensive than in New Orleans (but the public transportation system is by far superior in Nice, let’s not forget)
* Basic utilities are 10.99% more expensive in Nice than New Orleans, but Internet access is 9.28% less expensive in Nice than New Orleans
* If you join a fitness club, it will cost you 119.50% more in Nice than in New Orleans (but you may not need one because you’ll be getting a lot more exercise in such a walkable city)
* Clothing is as much as 182.79% more expensive in Nice than in New Orleans (one pair of Levi jeans — but aren’t these imported from the U.S.?)
* Salaries are 11.42% lower in Nice than in New Orleans

So, Nice is decidedly more expensive. In fact, Nice is right up there with the most expensive of cities in the world…like Sydney and London…and Paris. Even New York is lagging behind, according to this one source.
But, the question is: Where would you rather live? We all pay a price for the luxuries we want out of life. And as the saying goes, we all only live once. So, why not make the most of it?
