Paris Pride On Parade

The Paris Photo Awards put on a smashing display Friday night of (what I think is) genius-level photographic works at the premier opening at “Galerie 13 Sevigné” in the 4th. My favorite?…Jatin Kampani’s “Sunsilk,” but Michael Levin’s “Of Movement and Stillness” could have you in a dreamlike state the rest of your life. The show is on till July 13th, but if you can’t get by the gallery, you can download the entire brochure of winners in pdf format by clicking here: http://www.px3.fr/en/news/Px3-Catalogue-07-.zip Don’t miss it…well worth a detour!

The music blasting from the speakers at place de la Bastille Saturday afternoon was so loud that it was virtually impossible to enjoy the usual combination of Kir Peche and conversation at Café Français. I wondered who was in charge…he must have been deaf. One thing for sure…we would soon have been, too, if we hadn’t opted on walking down boulevard Henri IV toward the oncoming Gay Pride parade where we could only hear the “noise” from a distance.

The spectacle is always just that…quite a spectacle and all in the spirit of freedom, rights, solidarity and just plain old having fun. Some of the Drag Queens in full regalia looked to be in serious pain from walking miles in their platform six-inch-or-higher heels. Didn’t they know (as my mother always said), one must suffer to be beautiful?

The Durex float always displaying a several-stories-high inflated condom wasn’t as erect as usual but the augmented breasts on the transsexuals were perky as ever. One young woman lugging a big heavy backpack was topless, but not part of the parade at all so she wasn’t getting much attention.

As much as I love the insanity of it all, the best part of the show was watching the old ladies parked on the bench nearby ogling the stream of paraders and party-ers with awe and amusement. The expressions on their faces were priceless. We left before the last float floated by having seen enough elaborate costumes, exaggerated make-up and body parts to last another year to have dinner in Le Marais where the REAL party began!

At midnight the cell phone rang. It was a message from an Australian friend in hysterics as she was witnessing a rather bold sexual act between two fellows right on the street, giving me a “blow-by-blow” description of the event, while uttering she’d never seen such a thing on the streets of Melbourne! Too bad I had just passed that very spot and had missed it.
Oh well, maybe next year.

Tomorrow don’t miss our monthly coffee gathering, Parler Paris Après Midi, at 3 p.m. at La Pierre du Marais — one week earlier than usual as I’ll be traveling to San Francisco Thursday for the Living and Investing in France Real Estate Conference (see /parlerparis/apresmidi.html for more details). Everyone is welcome to come, chat, network, and get to know one another. It’s free.

Wednesday we will celebrate the U.S. Independence Day with friends, but if you’re not barbecuing yourself, go get a hamburger at Joe Allen Restaurant — it’s one of the best in Paris — at 30, rue Pierre Lescot, 1st, just in front of the Métro Etienne-Marcel (line #4). Call for reservations as there is always a special event there on July 4th: 01.42.36.70.13.

Then, the next time you’ll hear from me will be in the City by the Bay…San Francisco, from the Alliance Française, where we are holding the conference. If you haven’t yet reserved and would like to attend the conference and/or the dinner with special guest speakers Leonard Pitt and Cara Black, check with Schuyler Hoffman if there are still seats or to be put on a waiting list: mailto:[email protected]

A la prochaine…
