Dear Parler Paris Reader,

The dictionary describes a “star” as a “self-luminous celestial body consisting of a mass of gas held together by its own gravity in which the energy generated by nuclear reactions in the interior is balanced by the outflow of energy to the surface, and the inward-directed gravitational forces are balanced by the outward-directed gas and radiation pressures.”

Whew! What a mouthful. This kind of star we don’t often see in Paris. Look up and try, but the City of Light is simply too bright and luminous herself to allow us here on earth to gaze at celestial planes to see masses of gas called “stars.”

Thank goodness, there are many other kinds of stars here in Paris we can appreciate:

There are those also described as “celestial bodies visible at night from Earth as relatively stationary, usually twinkling points of light.” When was the last time you happened to gaze upon the Eiffel Tower at the stroke of midnight to see her twinkling points of light? Last night, a dinner companion walked home to her 16th arrondissement apartment and wrote me this passage: “I had an amazing show on the way home — the colors of the Eiffel Tower — white spotlights turned to white with a purple or blue center, then it turned bright blue and then blue with red, blue with green, purple and black, then black with white twinkling lights…beautiful. And to dazzle further, lightning was flashing in the sky behind the Tower.”

At this very moment, on the Parvis de l’Hôtel de Ville there are more than two dozen stars the dictionary describes as “graphic designs having five or more radiating points.” As part of the “Journée de l’Europe,” an exhibition of works by 25 contemporary artists are on display from now until May 14th. Each is tridimensional and represents the theme of “European Identity.” One is more creative than the next…some to gaze at, some to gaze into and some to gaze into you. Stroll among them and imagine yourself one of them.

Sometimes we call them “celestials,” but usually we call them “stars” — those the dictionary describes as “artistic performers or athletes whose leading roles or superior performances are acknowledged.” Three bright and shining singing stars lit up the Troubadour Coffee House Saturday night with their high spirited soprano notes belting out extracts from Strauss, Mozart, Puccini, Vivaldi and Rossini operas between courses. Lovely starlets Aviva Timonier, Susan Miller and Elisa Doughty hit such beautiful high notes that I expected my wine glass to break into star-shaped slivers, and all this while one-star chef Patrick Gharbi served up superior dishes for a fixed price menu of 37 euros. The chef who marries cuisine with concerts every Saturday night at his bistrot he deems “The Place to Meet and Eat through the Corridors of Time” is a star who the dictionary describes as deservedly “highly celebrated in a field or profession.” See http://www.troubadourcoffeehouse-paris.com/index.htm for more information and to reserve your place.

There is a Cow on Parade who thinks she is, as the dictionary describes, “outstanding or famous, especially in performing something.” We agree — she’s the star of the “Vach’Art” exhibition of cows all over town taking a grazing through Paris till June 16th. This one, on her hind legs in front of the Mairie of

the 4th arrondissement, clearly aspires to be one of the Troubadours! Aviva, Susan and Elisa, move over!

Paris herself is a star. She fits my definition of “a constellation believed to influence personal destiny.” She has certainly influenced mine. Has she yours?

A la prochaine…

The Community

…it remains comforting to know that a Paris forum is waiting for your work, that a community of listeners and equal interest friends are relatively easy to locate once you have arrived. Furthermore, the community here has always had its distinguishing qualities which separate it from those similar gatherings in other big-city locations. Many Paris-based writers often remark, however generally, on the accepting nature of the community, the lack of commercial-based competition replaced by support, open-minded experimentalism, and an undiluted commitment to the art itself – qualities which have been characteristic to the Paris expatriate community since the start of the twentieth-century and are less evident in larger communities, such as New York, where the sheer number and lack of a tangible commonality (i.e. foreignness) tends to create a less homogenous and accessible group. The relative accessibility and smallness of the community, qualities which one can assume have not really changed throughout each generation, are truly warm welcomes….
