Last night, 20 published and aspiring-to-be-published poets from Paris and points dotted all round the American landscape, gathered in my living room to be welcomed to the Paris Poetry Workshop III led by Cecilia Woloch (author of “Sacrifice,” “Tsigan: The Gypsy Poem” and “Late” ). They discovered one another as well as a taste of poetry and prose by the workshop’s contributing poets who read for our intimate group: Kathleen Spivak, Michele Noteboom, Lisa Pasold, Ellen Hinsey, Jennifer Dick, Heather Hartley and Cecilia Woloch — over a sumptuous buffet spread prepared by long-time Parler Paris team member, Sibel Pinto. In honor of the venue, Woloch read her poem titled “43 rue de Saintonge” (from “Late”) and I teared-up touched by the gesture. Paris poets will be reading at venues all throughout the week, so take advantage of this opportunity to soak up the overwhelming amount of talent convening in the city. On Saturday afternoon, I hooked up with Berkeley, California/Paris author of “Paris Disparu,” Leonard Pitt, who showed me his newest soon-to-be-published sequel focusing on the Left Bank. In Paris Disparu, Pitt walks you through the heart of Paris with hundreds of photos, maps, and engravings to discover a Paris that no longer exists. He researched the vintage images and then reproduced the same scene with a digital camera and a sharp eye highlighting landmarks to add perspective to what was then and what is now. Each page of the mock-up he carried of the new book fascinated me more than the next. In selfishness, I asked Leonard to take me on one of his walks and he agreed…but only if I would bring along a group! So, I invite you all to join me on the tour of the Left Bank on Saturday, May 7th from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. with Leonard Pitt leading the way and giving us the historical background he’s unearthed, from Saint-Germain-des-Prés to square Viviani. He won’t take more than 10 and no less than 8, so reserve now to be one of the select few. I carry my little Pentax everywhere I go — guess you already know most of the photos in Parler Paris are a result of it being always in my pocket ready for a photo op…there are so many in this magnificent city! On the heels of the Working and Living in France Conference (May 20 – 22), talented travel photographers Blair Howard and Rich Wagner will be leading The Ultimate Travel Photographer’s Workshop here in Paris (May 25 – 28). Last Tuesday at the Parler Paris Après Midi coffee gathering, Hawaiian visitor Gar Westfall was taking pictures of me taking pictures of him. We are all in a snappy mood. Saturday night, I laughed and smiled my way through the performance of Pirates of Penzance by The International Players directed by Edd ie Crew. It delighted a full house at the Salle des Fêtes in Le Pecq, a beautiful suburb of Paris just on the Seine between Vésinet and Saint-Germain-en-Laye. The comic opera (in English) supported the talents of more than three dozen amazing local voices — in particular, Aviva Timonier who played Mabel, the Major-General Stanley’s youngest daughter. Move-over Met — make room for Mabel. What a powerful voice leapt from “cette petite femme!” To learn more about The International Players and upcoming performances, visit their site at http://www.internationalplayers.info It is clear that the English language is exploding in Paris, thanks to lots of new young talent and an entrepreneurial spirit. Last Thursday evening Go Go Paris, Paris in English , celebrated the launch of it’s first edition at the Palais de Tokyo, handing out drinks of Vodka in some very red liquid that had the trendy collection of creative kids getting more animated by the moment. More English language newcomers were there bending their elbows and laughing it up…Lorin Kalisky with “Franglo.com,” a site for Classified in English (that powers our own Parler Paris classified section) and Daphné Siney with a new print magazine of classified ads at “WYN.” Move over Craig’s List and FUSAC — the new kids in town are big competition. Also now in English is Parismarais.com — The Art of Living Guide for Le Marais. Just today, the first newsletter (free and monthly) was launched…reporting monthly on loving life in Le Marais by editors Pascal Fonquernie (site manager) and myself.
