Yes to Europe with a Heart in France

“Oui” or “Non” is on everyone’s lips as the vote for the European Constitution winds down to Sunday, May 29th. Posters bearing these two simple words are posted all over the city, and I assume, all over France.

Yesterday, a new poll showed 54 percent will reject the European charter on Sunday’s vote. Government leaders are campaigning to change the sentiment by dismissing the fears that a European constitution will lead to a loss in identity. After having lived in Europe now more than a decade, I can emphatically say that there is no chance that the French will not remain French, the Italians will not remain Italian, the Germans will not remain German and so on for every European cultural group I can think of.

From the U.S. looking eastward, it’s easy to imagine Europe is one big blob, just like Europeans may perceive the U.S. as a “melting pot.” I’ve discovered there is nothing less true. The U.S., which values individual ideas, is more like a bowl of salad with lots of bits and pieces thrown together to create one great taste. Europe is more a smorgasbord of different dishes, hot-cold, spicy-bland — an association of very unique and diverse cultural, ethnic and nationalistic groups. If they can agree to disagree, the European nations will form a very powerful alliance that the U.S., China and the rest of the world will seriously have to reckon with.

There are arguments on both side of the coin, of course. The “Nons” claim that the rejection will bring “positive” changes. I chuckle at the irony of this thinking. EU leaders fear serious social crisis and there is no “Plan B” should the “Ouis” be outvoted.

The charter itself consists of three parts with multitudes of chapters and subsections, all printed in one document which can be found at the local Mairies (city halls) and by pdf download at http://www.hemicycle.info/publications.html (The official site is at http://www.constitution-europeenne.fr/)

All in French, the constitution is very difficult for a non-native speaker to digest, but even my French friends say it’s too complicated for the average person to comprehend. My guess is that a majority of those voting don’t have a real understanding of the constitution at all, but are voting for or against basic principals, even many of those they don’t fully grasp.

And why should we Americans care? I suppose that depends on what kind of American you are. Those who have an affinity with France care because the political center in the U.S. has shifted further right the last two decades. A strong and powerful European Union could therefore provide a counter-balance to the U.S. economic drive that gives multi-national corporations so much control and which profit from U.S. military escapades.

I’ve come to enjoy the social benefits France offers each and every one of its residents, such as quality free education, complete and excellent health care, fine public transportation, etc., etc. And I revel in the ability to travel easily to culturally diverse neighboring countries without scrutiny at the borders, all utilizing the same currency, speaking different languages.

For me, “Yes” is positive, not negative, in any language. I want to look forward to a strong and more unified Europe, even though I have one foot in the U.S., one foot in France and a heart in Paris.

A la prochaine…when we know “Oui” or “Non.”

La Compagnie Lester McNutt presents: TREEMONISHA by Scott Joplin Opera in Three Acts Word and music by Scott Joplin Saturdays at 9:00 p.m. and Sundays at 3:00 p.m., through June 19

Théâtre Darius Milhaud 80, Allée Darius Milhaud, 75019 Paris
Métro: Porte de Pantin Call 01-42-01-92-26 for reservations

Dubbed the “King of Ragtime” by his music publisher, Scott Joplin (1868-1917) was a formally educated musician whose popular piano rags inspired him to go on to composition on a larger, far more developed scale and conception. His second opera, Treemonisha, an example of his most serious work, was published in 1911 at his own expense.

The story of a young woman who defies the facts of her social and racial background and works her way up the social ladder, trading on education and non-violence, 40 years before Mahatma Gandhi and 60 years before Martin Luther King. Needless to say that Scott Joplin’s chances of raising money to produce his masterpiece were anywhere from modest to remote.

The New York Times praised Treemonisha as gently imbued with ragtime, aspiring “to genuine operatic richness.”

A JUST PEACE FOR THE PALESTINIANS

The Democratic Party has been as inactive on ideas for peace between Israelis and Palestinians as has the Bush administration. Clearly, the issue is a thorny one. Our June event is an effort to approach the issue from a viewpoint of what would constitute a fair peace for the Palestinians while not compromising Israel’s security. It is not intended as Israel vs. Palestine, but Israel and Palestine.

Michel Warschawski, President of the Israel-Palestinian Alternative Information Center (AIC) of Jerusalem

Warschawski is an Israeli author and tireless activist for a lasting peace between Israelis and Palestinians. In 1982, during the Israel invasion of Lebanon, he was one of the founders of Yesh Gvul (“There is a Limit”), a movement of soldiers and reserve officers against the war and occupation. He has published numerous works on the issue, available in French.

Richard Wagman President of the French Jewish Peace Union (UJFP — Union Juive Française pour la Paix)

The American Hospi

According to the American Obesity Association, approximately 30% of children 6 to 10 years of age are overweight and 15% are obese, higher than ever before. Childhood obesity can lead to diabetes, hypertension and other chronic diseases which were once only prevalent among adults.

Saturday, June 4th at 10 a.m.

The Second Annual Children’s day, organized by the Pediatrics Department of the American Hospital of Paris, focuses on Preventing Childhood Obesity: A Challenge of the 21st Century. Pediatricians and health professionals will be speaking on the diagnosis, cause and long-term consequences of obesity in childhood and adolescence, and will review common diet mistakes, the psychology of obese children and orthopedic issues these children may face.
Admission is free and seating is limited so advance reservations are required. The lectures will be in French and English, with simultaneous translation.

Obesity plays a significant role in causing poor health in women, negatively affecting quality of life and shortening life span. More than half of adult U.S. women are overweight, and more than one-third are obese. Prevention and early treatment of obesity are crucial to ensuring the health of women of all ages.
