The Alliance Française is a French organization created on July 26, 1883, aiming to promote the French language and culture outside or inside France. In 1906, American patron James Hazen Hyde founded the Federation of French Alliances in the United States and became its president until 1953. The San Francisco chapter was the first created in the United States. It was founded by four journalists in 1889, opening the first two language classes in 1894.
