Juggling a Jolly Old June in Paris

June is one of the two best months of the year to be in Paris.

The month started off with the first time the Parler Parlor French-English Conversation Group met at Lutèce Langue on Saturday morning at 11 a.m. Located in the corner spot on the 3rd floor of a “Haussmannian” building on boulevard de Sébastopol, a few steps from the Centre Georges Pompidou and Les Halles, Lutèce Langue offers the perfect environment — five nicely appointed private rooms with windows overlooking the “quartier” within which each group (of six) can comfortably meet without int

The rooms filled with regular members and new comers, and then after in their usual fashion, traipsed off for lunch together. Le Bistrot Beaubourg, just down the street on rue de la Reynie, was the perfect spot and may well become the group’s regular “cantine.”

Many of the conversation group members have attended Lutèce Langue and have given it a high recommendation. As part of our partnership, students of Lutèce Langue may attend Parler Parlor free, too! What a perfect combination…learn the language then come practice with your friends! (For more information, visit and

The location couldn’t be more central. A few blocks away, the entire “Parvis de l’Hôtel de Ville” has been transformed (until July 1st) into a garden of 2600 square meters comprised of 110,000 plants (how on earth do they count that!?). The creative esthetics of the French are ceaselessly amazing as they pour tons of creative talents, energy and not to mention, euros, into culturally entertaining and educating us. Walk through the gardens, admire the creations, watch artists carving objects from fruits and vegetables, partake of free juices and fruits and feel the cool fresh air resulting from the massive vegetation that now foregrounds the elaborate Hôtel de Ville. Back in my “hood,” organized by the “Comité des Fêtes,” the “Brocante d’Eté” (rummage sale of the Summer), was in full swing all weekend long along the streets of Eugène Spuller, Bretagne, Perrée, Debelleyme and Dupetit-Thouars, Place Turenne, Carreau du Temple and at the courtyard of the Mairie. Sunday morning, Mayor Pierre Aidenbaum was out shaking hands with his constituents while residents and visitors canvassed the stands for bargains. It was obvious that the trend to decorate and furnish with industrial metal objects is all the rage. It was impossible to count of the stands offering brushed metal file cabinets, desks, chairs and lamps.

There is no shortage of exhibitions to visit this month. We stopped in to see “Rembrandt et la nouvelle Jérusalem, Juifs et Chrétiens à Amsterdam au Siècle d’Or” at the Musée d’Art et d’Histoire du Judaïsme on until July 1st in the beautifully renovated Hôtel de Saint-Aignan (71 rue du Temple, 3rd, While

Rembrandt’s paintings are doubtlessly magnificent, the etchings and drawings are jewels. For more exhibition news, visit

The best festivals of the year are also on the horizon:

June 20th, make note the “Festival des Soirs d’Été” begins for the 10th season at the Mairie of the Third Arrondissement…

On Summer Solstice, June 21st, we will all enjoy the Fête de la Musique!…

June 30th, for the most outrageous fun you can have, don’t miss the annual Paris Gay Pride Parade!…

And this is just the beginning of the fun in the City of Light…

Now, can you guess what is the second best month of the year to be in Paris?

A la prochaine…
