How about two “houses” to make you drool? One’s a real 13th-century French château and the other a 15th-century medieval townhouse, both in the Occitan region in the southwest of France…the Tarn.

Can you imagine yourself a “Châtelain” or “Châtelaine?” Let’s just say “lord or lady the manor,” but in this case, the “houses” are way more than manors!

One of the most important designers of our generation, Catherine-Hélène Frei Von Auffenberg’s is the architect of the magnificent 13th-century Château de Pampelonne, and believe it or not, it’s for sale…for the price of a one-bedroom apartment in Paris! This is a golden opportunity for someone who can picture him — or herself — as the lord or lady of the manor!

If you don’t know where Pampelonne is, then get out your Google maps (or just click here) and check it out. It’s less than one hour’s drive from the Toulouse International Airport and 20 minutes from the Episcopal City of Albi. The Tarn is one of the original 83 departments created during the French Revolution from a part of the former province of Languedoc.

The château, with its secluded park, restored stables and 17th-century pavilion, was transformed and chosen to be featured in both World of Interiors, Homes and Antiques and Maison Chic magazines. The four bedroom 500 square meter (5,382 square feet) home is on two levels. The one-time stables have been partly converted into a summer dining room, atelier and utility room, with the first floor easily converted into two bedrooms and a bathroom. The pavilion features a highly unique and unusual roof structure. The 1,200 square-meter expansive grounds consisting of both a park and garden, secluded and private, filled with magnificent old trees and also provide ample space for a large private swimming pool…should you wish to add it.

If you can’t see yourself in a château, then how would you feel in a medieval townhouse? Also designed by Catherine-Helene Frei Von Auffenberg, this glorious, famous and “très sympathique” 9th-century (yes, 9th-century!) townhouse is in the very heart of the Gorges de l’Avéyron with truly spectacular scenery. The village, Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val, just north of Toulouse, was officially voted the second most popular village in all of France in 2015 and was the site of two recent major films: 100 Foot Journey starring Helen Mirren, and Charlotte Grey starring Cate Blanchett.

Then, enter the 15th-century Renaissance front door at 35 Rue Droite, which happens to be the most famous door in all of Saint-Antonin and behold the magnificent hall with Renaissance furniture, a modern era Pieta, a 17th-century candelabra and the Bishop of Albi’s one-of-a-kind 18th-century “window” from the Albi Cathedral. Thirty-five Rue Droite was built in 1240 just after the Last Crusader army ravaged the Cathar region in 1212. The history speaks for itself.
