Celebrating Twenty-Eight Years and Looking Forward

La chaise bleue sculpture on the Promenade in Nice, France

This is the week France is going back to school and back to work. Every email I get from colleagues now starts with some reference to having enjoyed vacation (?), even if it wasn’t vacation for most of us. Spending the summer in Nice doesn’t mean I’m on vacation, even if it feels like it…and that’s what is so great about being near the sea and mingling among the tourists…one cannot help but pick up their relaxed and happy vibes even while going full steam.

PURSUING THE DREAM

This coming Sunday is my 28th anniversary living in France. It’s so hard to believe that so many years have passed since we first arrived with our suitcases and not much else…and sometimes even harder to believe how many people we have helped make their dream come true to live in France, just as we had. The process was very different then, without the internet, having to do everything by snail mail or phone.

I wasn’t even a part of the process—my then-husband took care of it all to obtain our visas and find an apartment. He made a special trip to Paris to visit apartments for rent, having employed an agency advertised in the FUSAC specializing in long-term furnished rentals. A French friend in Los Angeles connected us with a friend of hers working at the bank CIC literally a block from the apartment we rented and opened bank accounts without any hassles. That was long before FATCA and the nightmare expatriates now experience trying to do such a simple task. We sold our house and cars, packed up most of our belongings into a storage unit, shipped our art to Paris and brought over big suitcases with personal effects. That was the beginning of the rest of my life.

It was relatively easy for me then—he had done all the work, and all I had to do what show up! Those were the days, my friend. Now, things have changed and it’s a lot more difficult in some ways, but easier in others, thanks to the internet. And since then, I’ve learned a lot—so much so that I consult individually with a new client every single day to help them make the same dream come true!

If you’re one of those pining to live in France, then you’re in luck. This coming September 10th, I’m going to be talking about “Pursuing the Dream: Living and Investing in France” on a Webinar with the Federation of Alliances Françaises USA at 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm EDT (8 p.m. CEST). The original date of this event was July 30th and anyone who registered for that date will automatically be registered for this new date of September 10th.

This event will be on Zoom and is free for all Alliance Française members, AATF members, and free to readers of Adrian Leeds Nouvellettres®! (Non-members or persons who have no AF chapter nearby can purchase tickets ($10).) Click here to register and get more details.

GARDEN ON THE PROMENADE

Ella Dyer, one of our Search Consultants in Nice, who is an expert on wheelchair accessibility, came down with me yesterday to “Le Jardin de la Promenade” (our newest Fractional Ownership project) to scope out the potential for the property to accommodate mobility-challenged individuals. It almost passed all the tests…all but one. Entry to the apartment on the ground level is no problem for a wheelchair, from the garden or from the building entry which already has a ramp, but the bathroom door is a bit too narrow to fit a standard wheelchair. Nonetheless, it was all good news, because no doubt it would work very well for someone on a walker, cane, etc. as it’s ground level and there are no steps within the apartment with lots of space in which to move around. We are also making this property pet-friendly because of the garden.

This spacious studio apartment is located directly on the Promenade des Anglais and will be available for January 2023 usage. With 33 square meters (355 square feet) of luxurious living space and a furnished private garden with a deck, that’s all that will be between you and the Mediterranean Sea. The apartment was recently completely renovated to perfection by Designer Laura Poirier—such perfection that it was used in a recent episode of House Hunters International episode (“Californians Take Tax Practice to France”).

The apartment is outfitted with a queen-sized Murphy bed (also known as a pull-down bed, fold-down bed, or wall bed) that when closed, converts to a comfortable sofa, saving lots of livable space. The newly installed kitchen is fully equipped with a two-burner stove, oven, microwave, dishwasher, washer/dryer, and a large refrigerator. The bathroom has a very spacious shower with a heated towel warmer, a window, and lots of light. The private garden can be entered not only from the large glass sliding doors of the apartment, but also from the outdoor entry path to the building.

The location on the Promenade des Anglais is close to the Magnan tram and Rosa Bonheur bus stops for very easy and fast access to Place Masséna, Old Town, and the Old Port…as well as to the airport! It’s convenient for all Nice and the Côte d’Azur has to offer. For one or two people, owning a share of this beautiful apartment in this amazing location directly on the sea is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. We don’t have an exact price range yet for the shares, but we are planning to meet your expectations for about 60,000€ a share, or less!

Don’t waste a moment in getting your name on the mailing list. The moment we announce the shares, I suspect they will also be gone within a few hours once we launch it. Email us now!

FIGHTING FOR RESPECT

Joanne and David Burke, of Blue Lion Films, just released their latest film about Black African Americans in World War I: “Fighting for Respect.” It will be shown this Saturday, September 3rd at 1 p.m. at the Cinéma St. André des Arts and I intend on being there!

This is their newest documentary on the history of African Americans in France. Fighting for Respect captures the plight of African American soldiers who fought in WWI, receiving the Croix de Guerre military decoration from France, while still fighting discrimination and hatred at home in America.

Congratulations Adrian!🎉🍾🥂that is truly remarkable! We just returned from a dream holiday where we started in Florence, went to the Italian riviera then onto Biot enjoying the area and then drove across making our way to Paris for about 8 days. I started reading your newsletter back in 2003! I have you to thank for teaching me so much about France over the years! I used to use your restaurant guide! Funny thing I finally ate in Chez Omar after all these years. We stayed on rue de La Corderie so it was right there. Anyway, as I visit France over the years I often think of you and thank you for teaching me so much! Merci, Lisa
