Alone in Paris

Valentine’s Day can easily overlook those of us without a spouse or lover, so it wasn’t surprising that talk of love stirred the pot for some of you readers who want to know what Paris is like for singles. As a “celibataire,” I can tell you that Paris is the answer to a single person’s prayers.

In less urban environments, where you go from one “bubble” to another (from your home to your car to your place of work, etc.) there is less chance to have regular contact and communication with the public as you might in Paris sipping on a Kir at a corner café or just riding a public bus. Just this alone gives you opportunities to meet the love of your life where you’d least expect it. In fact, I know of several love stories that started standing at a light on a street corner with a casual exchange.

Fortunately, too, French men and women are not as cautious with one another about misunderstood sexual innuendos or harassment in the workplace and are much more at ease with their natural sexuality. This opens up more possibilities where you might be otherwise be closed to the idea of connecting up with a colleague you’ve been attracted to.

In Ruth Mastron’s presentation this past weekend (co-author of “Au Contraire: Figuring Out the French”), she described the linear progression of an Anglo-Saxon’s romantic relationships, starting with dating, going steady, getting engaged, then married and possibly ending with divorce. The French have a more circular approach. They meet often within a circle of friends, spend time together within that same circle, bond with one another more over the course of time, leading to invite the other to a family gathering (a big step) and then to eventually seeing each other alone — their circles converging just prior to marriage…the opposite of what we think is the norm. No wonder newcomer single American women in Paris are so surprised when an acceptance to dinner seemed to mean she might be the dessert!

As a single woman, we have the advantage that Paris is very safe city, so being alone late at night isn’t threatening. This is very liberating, as it’s easier to meet someone when you’re alone rather than with friends. You can sit in a café alone and not feel alone or be alone for long if you choose not to be. You can go to a movie alone, or take yourself out for dinner and enjoy your own company, because you have Paris by your side, without feeling like you’re the exception rather than the rule — so many others are single in the City of Light and loving it.

England’s pub culture provides a meeting spot for singles and the U.S. Happy Hour is well-known as a way of getting out of our proverbial bubbles, but the French circle of friends is what most depend on to open the playing field. There are lots of ways of meeting singles within friendship circles that make it easy and natural. In this month’s Continental Airlines in-flight magazine, author Marion Winik listed Jim Haynes’ Sunday night dinners as one of the best ways to score a love affair. That’s true for all the other “meeting places” around town, too, such as “Paris Soirées,” “Parler Parlor,” “Parler Paris Après Midi” and loads of other organizational gatherings that are noted in our Community Calendar (scroll down), in the twice-monthly France USA Contacts magazine or online at http://www.Franglo.com

So, if what you want is to be alone a lot less, then my advice is to take advantage of all the networking opportunities the community offers up, both free and paid, and get out and meet your fellow and female “celibataires.”

A la prochaine…

Dubbed the “King of Ragtime” by his music publisher, Scott Joplin (1868-1917) was a formally educated musician whose popular piano rags inspired him to go on to composition on a larger, far more developed scale and conception. His second opera, Treemonisha, an example of his most serious work, was published in 1911 at his own expense. The story of a young woman who defies the facts of her social and racial background and works her way up the social ladder, trading on education and non-violence, 40 years before Mahatma Gandhi and 60 years before Martin Luther King.Needless to say that Scott Joplin’s chances of raising money to produce his masterpiece were anywhere from modest to remote. The New York Times praised Treemonisha as gently imbued with ragtime, aspiring “to genuine operatic richness.”

Monday Evenings: To the Lighthouse (Start date Monday March 7th)
Tuesday Evenings: Catcher in the Rye & Great Gatsby: Comparative study looking at two different modes of social critique in the Modern Age
(Start date Tuesday March 15th)
Tuesday Afternoons: To the Lighthouse Probably…

The current set of Salons wraps up this week- as always, I feel our conversations could continue much longer. I am also hearing some wonderful writing in response to these huge works….perhaps this Spring will see the first Alesian Salon literary collection. Also looking towards the May Salons- there is a strong argument for The Crucible (timely- in memoriam of Arthur Miller as well as politically resonant…), or a Henry James text, or Moby Dick or Middlemarch or Midnights’ Children or Invisible Man…never to early to suggest your ideas.

But now it is time to turn to the next round- the Tuesday night GG/Catcher Salon has 7 signed up, so is moving towards full. The others are also well-subscribed, but there is still room. To sign up: if you have already attended a Salon, you may simply drop me a note (via the website http://literarysalon.free.fr or straight email) to confirm your participation. If this is your first Salon, your participation is insured with a 25 Euro deposit ( inscribed to Toby Brothers, sent to 3 ter rue d’Alesia, Paris 75014). I am also organizing a student Salon (12-17) for Catcher- if you know of an enthusiastic young reader, please have them contact me- I am hoping to schedule four meetings in March to meet and understand the elusive Holden Caulfield- nice guy, needs some help.

Other events…
This Thursday come view the documentary created by two French professors:

“Fifteen people (French and American) talking about the colors of America: art, landscape and race with both passion and irony.”

The Red Wheelbarrow bookstore is working with the Salon to provide texts for the upcoming Salons — and are offering the best price. They have some copies now, but I believe most will arrive in 2 weeks. You might want to call first to be sure, but any visit to this lovely book-lovers haven is not wasted. Abigail and Penelope are wonderful women who know the books they sell and love to talk about reading and writers. And who doesn’t need an excuse to go to the Marais?

AMERICAN POLITICAL COMIC at SHAKESPEARE & CO-PARIS

Easter Monday, 28 March, 2005, 8 p.m. Shakespeare & Company, 37 rue de la Bûcherie, Paris, 75005

Reading of “Whinings of a Malcontent,” a play in one act written and performed by American stand-up comic, Rick Ashton (A&E Network, Comedy Central). “Whinings” is full of sex, death, politics, religion- (you know, a comedy!) set deep within Bush-occupied America. It was censored in Sacramento, California, do to it’s political content. Scheduled to open August 6, 2004, just blocks from Governor Schwarzenegger’s mansion, the theatre owner backed-out during production, citing his “right-wing republican audiences wouldn’t get it for fear of accepting the truth”.

Ashton hosted an award-winning radio show in Boulder, Colorado. He has
appeared several times on National TV and Radio, as well as many local
shows across the US. He is a frequent visitor to Paris, and even
marched in the Anti-War demonstrations in the streets of Paris in
Spring 2003.

PARIS MUSE

Art Styles of the Rich and Famous
Paris Muse Has Privileged Access to the Salomon de Rothschild Mansion

Before there were museums, there were cabinets de curiosités. Also known as wunderkammen, or cabinets of wonder, noble collectors arranged their most precious objects in these cabinets for delectation and display. Every home of standing would feature one, a kind of VIP room for high culture. The 19th-century Salomon de Rothschild mansion in Paris was no exception.

Our new 1.5- hour tour “The Rothschild Private Collection” will focus primarily on this cabinet de curiosités, a room brimming with the findings of Salomon and Adele Rothschild, members of the formidable finance dynasty’s Paris branch. You’ll see how collecting treasures and constructing mansions like this one were part of an elaborate effort to create le goût Rothschild, the family’s “brand” of taste and sophistication.

Mona Lisa Moves

If you’ve been to the Louvre’s Grande Galerie in the last four years, you may have noticed large grey construction walls marring its otherwise spectacular space. Behind those walls, workers were busy renovating the Salle des États. Salle 6 on the first floor of the Louvre’s Denon wing –o otherwise known as “the place where Mona Lisa is supposed to be”– will finally open its doors this April.

Leonardo’s Mona Lisa will no longer be exiled from the rest of her creator’s paintings: La Belle Ferronière, Virgin of the Rocks, and John the Baptist. In her newly restored setting, she’ll be smiling at familiar Venetian company too. Veronese’s epic Wedding of Cana, once awkwardly wedged between French history paintings, will also make its triumphal return to the Salle des États.

In preparation for the big move, Mona Lisa will be hidden from her admiring public on one historic day: Monday, April 4, 2005. But everything should be back to normal in time for American director Ron Howard to begin shooting his film adaptation of “The Da Vinci Code” in May. Howard has just received permission from the Ministry of Culture to shoot inside the Louvre. And, conveniently enough, the Salle des États is a featured site in Dan Brown’s mystery thriller.

Astro Paris by Eric Francis

Chiron in Aquarius

The shocking news of the week, and the best astrology news in quite a while, is that Chiron is about to go into Aquarius for the first time since 1961. This happens Monday, Feb. 21, 2005 at 6:09 pm GMT in London, 1:09 pm EST in New York, 10:09 am PST in California, 13:56 local time at Cydonia Mensae, at the ‘Face on Mars’.

For those who would like to start from the beginning on Chiron, it was discovered in 1977 by astronomer Charles Kowal and was the first major planetary discovery since Pluto in 1930. Chiron’s themes are very much in tune with the era in which it was discovered, and center on what was at the time called ‘human potential’. Yes, there was a time in history not so long ago when people were willing to admit that the human race had actual potential. The mid-to-late 70s were a daring era in history, with much experimentation in feminism, therapy, spiritual ideology, divination and astrology, organic food and sexuality. Holistic healing was starting to get attention.

So much of what we take for granted today arrived during this time in history.

In other news, the Sun goes into Pisces on Feb. 18, close on the wings of Merucy, which went into Pisces on Weds. The 16th. There is a highly energized Virgo New Moon on Feb. 24.

Happy Birthday, Aquarius!
Within days from now, Chiron makes its ingress into your birth sign. In the words of William Butler Yates, “Surely some revelation is at hand.” This is a true beginning for you, a time of focusing your mind and your life; a time of heightened awareness; a time of the most intense self-understanding you’ve ever known. At this point, you stand on the brink of who you truly are. Are you ready? I think you are. Are you willing? You have no choice, because the time is upon you. There will be moments when you will look at the world and see it as a different place; many times, as well, when you will look at yourself and see an entirely different person. This is not an illusion; this is the time.

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT FOR DEMOCRATS
BAD NEWS/GOOD NEWS

We are very disappointed to tell you that Congressman Ben Chandler US House of Representatives, 6th District, Kentucky cannot be in Paris on February 19, the evening that Democrats Abroad France had so enthusiastically planned a fundraising dinner for him. Because of his seat on the International Relations Mid-East subcommittee, Congressman Chandler has been asked to appear in the Middle East that weekend.

The Congressman will, nonetheless, appear at a general speaking event in Paris on Monday, February 21. Information is as follows:

Where: Planet Hollywood, 78 ave des Champs Elysees, 75008
When: Monday, February 21, 17:00-18:30
Topic: What Impact Does Congress have on US Foreign Policy Decisions
and How can Congress Help to Mend Relations with France?
Question and answer period afterwards.

A contribution to Democrats Abroad would be appreciated.
Suggested contribution: 10 Euros

RSVP: [email protected]

This meeting provides a very exciting occasion for us all. Rep. Chandler is the only Democrat from Kentucky in Congress, sits on the International Relations Committee, and wants to help us, Americans living abroad, get our overseas issues across to our policy-makers. This is also the most effective way we have to express our foreign policy views. To learn more about him: http://chandler.house.gov/ (then About Ben)

UW-MADISON ALUMNI GATHER FOR A CLASSIC MIDWESTERN EVENING IN PARIS Funny shoes, popcorn and beer: a night on the lanes in the city of light

PARIS – – A night of bowling is planned for University of Wisconsin-Madison Alumni on February 10th, 2005 at the Bowling Mouffetard, 5th arrondissement at 7:30 P.M.

For the first time, UW Alums, known throughout the world for their academic excellence, their progressive world-view and continual cheerfulness, will bring part of Midwestern culture to Paris, the city they inhabit and love. For some, the event will be a blast from the past; reminiscent of university nights spent talking politics, life, and love over cheap beers. And for those who are lucky enough to attend as guests it will be a unique peek into a different kind of Americana.

Most students study at the university more than four years, not a reflection of their academic abilities, rather their willingness to understand the world that surrounds them. The phrase often heard around the Madison Campus: “Work hard, play hard” says it all. Madison is a place where people are genuinely engaged in learning, while enjoying life in a distinctive city in America’s varied landscape. Europeans have scarcely encountered that way of life and this is what the University’s French Alumni Club seeks to advance.

The recent history of tenuous relations between France and the United States has amplified negative stereotypes across the Atlantic. The club hopes, through its many events, to demystify existing misunderstandings of Middle America, while having some good, old-fashioned fun.
