Celebrating The 4Th Of July With Real Hamburgers And Country Music

My inside track at the City Hall confirms that there is simply nothing happening on a city-wide basis to celebrate the this coming Sunday 4th of July with their American friends…so “tant pis!” — I’m making hamburgers instead.

REAL hamburgers. Not the McDonald’s burgers the French all think are the real thing. You know — fresh ground beef mixed with spices and egg to make it gel, grilled, with a square pat of American cheese melted on top, bacon strips to add, “dressed” with iceberg lettuce, a slice of red homegrown tomato, relish, mayonnaise, mustard and ketchup on a toasted sesame seed bun, served with Cole slaw or potato salad, chips or French fries (no, not “Freedom fries), Coca Cola and brownies for dessert. Is your mouth watering yet?

You can get all those things here now. At one time, even the ground beef wasn’t readily available. Now, even the buns are easy to locate in any Franprix supermarket.

I can vividly remember last year when I invited my friends for the 4th of July Burger Bonanza chez Leeds — their wide eyes and their unison chanting of “hmmmm” as they took that first bite — that a good old-fashioned American burger is one of the things we still seriously miss. Coq au vin just doesn’t get the same reaction!

One great place here in Paris to get a REAL burger is at Joe Allen’s, 30 rue Pierre Lescot in the 1st arrondissement, just at the Etienne-Marcel Métro. It’s not on the menu, but just ask for it!

Something else we yearn for? For those of us who spent time in the woods of East Tennessee or the Carolinas, it’s Country Music. Luckily, a town in the Southwest of France (appropos location, n’est-ce pas?) called “Mirande” (population 4000) has fixed all that. Every year for the last 12 years American and European artists come to play more than 50 concerts over six days to a crowd of more than 100,000 on a 35-meter stage putting out 30,000 watts of sound.

This year the Mirande Country Music Festival is from July 9th to 14th. They claim to transform the town into an American one and is considered the first Country Music festival in Europe. Concerts start at 5 p.m. and go until dawn every day of the festival. There are also hot-air balloon flights, American cars, Harley-Davidsons and a variety of other attractions, stands selling Indian and western clothing, local gastronomy (of course — this IS France!) and numerous other items.

One special group worth making the trip for is “Susi Gott and the Paris Cats” playing on July 10th. Susi is a violinist, singer, composer and Appalachian folk dancer originally from North Carolina who has a 30-year professional career with some of the biggest names in Country Music and has directed the Country Music program at East Tennessee State University in Johnson City.

Susi’s been living in Auxy, a little village in the Loiret (department 48) 59 miles from Paris for the last 15 years with a French husband and three bilingual, bicultural kids. Tomorrow’s French Property Insider will feature some of Susi Gott’s memoirs about her life in this small French village and properties for sale in the area — just a short drive or train trip from Paris.

So, if this July you Expats need a fix of Americana, go for burgers and country music…right here in France!

A la prochaine…
