“Des Bonnes Nouvelles (And Some Bad News, Too)”

Both Jean Taquet and I have good news and bad news for you (more good than bad) and one thing is for sure, we have plenty of it.

(Jean Taquet is a French jurist and associate member of the Delaware Bar Association who is the author of “The Insider Guide to Practical Answers for Living in France” and who has helped hundreds of us through the trials and tribulations of immigration and other legal issues.)

THE BAD NEWS: The deadline to declare your annual income for the purpose of personal income tax in France is March 30th.

THE GOOD NEWS: Under some conditions, American citizens who are French residents and do not earn French income can ask for an extension until the American tax declaration has been prepared.

THE BAD NEWS: The regularization process, after living ten years in France, demands that the applicant prove permanent residency in France for every single year concerned.

THE GOOD NEWS: Having a medical condition such that, should the foreigner be sent to the country of citizenship, the probable consequence could be death, while staying in France would enable the applicant to either be cured or, at least, function normally.

THE BAD NEWS: Jean has not yet found a permanent office to hang his hat and therefore we won’t be seeing him in San Francisco at the Living and Investing in France Conference.

THE GOOD NEWS: His replacement is sure to fill his shoes with success! Laurent C. Vonderweidt, whose international law firm in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Paris assists both Americans moving to France and French moving to the U.S., will be speaking candidly on Saturday, March 20th at the Living and Investing in France conference about “Obtaining the Right to Be in France.” Laurent received his first degree in France, worked for a firm specializing in cases brought before the French Supreme Court and then moved to San Diego to acquire a Masters Degree in taxation. He’s a member of both the California and Paris Bar Associations and an arbitrator with the L.A. Superior Court and the NASD. To read more about Laurent Vonderweidt, visit /frenchproperty/conference/LIFpresenters.html or his own Web site at http://www.avocatsusa.com
