Gray Paree or Gay Paree?

When I was living in Los Angeles, we had an expression for the dreary weather every June — “June Gloom.” June in Paris is quite a different story. Not as a result of the weather, because it can be cool and rainy and downright unpleasant, but because June in Paris is absolutely “GAY” in many respects.

Every year I look forward to several major festivals that bring everyone to the streets…dancing, singing, laughing…gay!

Tuesday, June 21st, on Summer Solstice, music will permeate every molecule of oxygen on the streets of Paris during the 24th edition of “Fête de la Musique.” The festival began when Maurice Fleuret became “Directeur de la Musique et de la Danse” in October 1981 and at the request of Jack Lang to have “la musique partout et le concert nulle part” (“music everywhere and the concert anywhere”). At the time, they studied French cultural habits and found that five million people, one out of two being young, played a musical instrument. They dreamed of bringing everyone to the streets to play and celebrate. Their dream became MORE than true.

Now, this year other cities have caught the music festival fever, too…London and Yaoundé (Cameroon)! It’s free to play on the streets and free to listen. Professionals and amateurs alike will be showing off their musical talents all over town (and all over France).

My favorite spots in Paris are: Jazz at l’Hôtel de Sully (4th), Brazilian at the Mairie de 3ème, choral under the arcade at the Place des Vosges and orchestral(National Orchestra of France) under the Pyramide at Le Louvre. But, music will be everywhere…so hit the streets starting about 6 p.m., go hungry and take advantage of the venders selling grilled “merguez” (spicy Algerian lamb sausage) on baguette and other street fare.

For complete information (in French), visit
http://www.fetedelamusique.culture.fr And for the program, download the pdf file here:
http://www.fetedelamusique.culture.fr/upload/pdf/pre_prog_fm_mai05.pdf

On the heels of the merriment of music, Gay Pride lines up for its annual parade (“La Marche des Fiertés”) on Saturday, June 25th. It’s my favorite event of the year! It’s funny, fun, bawdy and sometimes shocking. You certainly don’t have to be Gay to witness it or participate in it…just have an open mind and ready camera.

The miles-long array of colorful floats and costumed paraders depart at 1:30 p.m. from place du Montparnasse, working their way down boulevard du Montparnasse to Port-Royal, down the boulevards Saint-Michel and Saint-Germain, le Pont de Sully to boulevard Henri IV, arriving at place de la Bastille to party, party, party. More than 700,000 people will there to make this the biggest French Pride Parade in the history of the city.

My favorite spot is where it finishes near Place de la Bastille — go for drinks at one of the cafés on the square and watch the parade roll in, then stay to party at the Bastille or all night in Le Marais. The official program will be provided by parade sponsor ZURBAN, but for complete information, visit http://www.gaypride.fr/article.php?id_article=94 or http://marche.inter-lgbt.org/

La Compagnie Lester McNutt presents: TREEMONISHA by Scott Joplin Opera in Three Acts Word and music by Scott Joplin Saturdays at 9:00 p.m. and Sundays at 3:00 p.m., through June 19

Théâtre Darius Milhaud 80, Allée Darius Milhaud, 75019 Paris
Métro: Porte de Pantin Call 01-42-01-92-26 for reservations

Dubbed the “King of Ragtime” by his music publisher, Scott Joplin (1868-1917) was a formally educated musician whose popular piano rags inspired him to go on to composition on a larger, far more developed scale and conception. His second opera, Treemonisha, an example of his most serious work, was published in 1911 at his own expense.

The story of a young woman who defies the facts of her social and racial background and works her way up the social ladder, trading on education and non-violence, 40 years before Mahatma Gandhi and 60 years before Martin Luther King. Needless to say that Scott Joplin’s chances of raising money to produce his masterpiece were anywhere from modest to remote.

The New York Times praised Treemonisha as gently imbued with ragtime, aspiring “to genuine operatic richness.”

Reading: COLM TOIBIN
June 22 at 7 p.m.

COLM TOIBIN presents his latest novel THE MASTER.

“…The Master tells the story of a man (Henry James) born into one of America’s first intellectual families who leaves his country in the
late nineteenth century…. Toibin captures the loneliness and the hope of a master of psychological subtlety whose forays into intimacy inevitably failed those he tried to love. The emotional intensity of
this portrait is riveting.”

Toibin is the author of four other novels, The South, The Heather Blazing, The Story of the Night, and The Blackwater Lightship.

A JUST PEACE FOR THE PALESTINIANS

The Democratic Party has been as inactive on ideas for peace between Israelis and Palestinians as has the Bush administration. Clearly, the issue is a thorny one. Our June event is an effort to approach the issue from a viewpoint of what would constitute a fair peace for the Palestinians while not compromising Israel’s security. It is not intended as Israel vs. Palestine, but Israel and Palestine.

Michel Warschawski, President of the Israel-Palestinian Alternative Information Center (AIC) of Jerusalem

Warschawski is an Israeli author and tireless activist for a lasting peace between Israelis and Palestinians. In 1982, during the Israel invasion of Lebanon, he was one of the founders of Yesh Gvul (“There is a Limit”), a movement of soldiers and reserve officers against the war and occupation. He has published numerous works on the issue, available in French.
