HGTV Best of France

HGTV LIVE Stream

This week the filming of our 26th House Hunters International episode got underway with some of the “usual suspects” in the crew and new “contributors” — a young American couple named Brook and Jonas, with two little boys aged three and six who moved here a few months ago. They are seeking a furnished rental apartment in Le Marais with two bedrooms for a budget of about €2,400 per month. With average rentals of furnished apartments in Paris at about €35 per square meter per month, their budget is right on target.

As is the TV show’s formula, we will visit three different apartments together, all with most of the attributes ticked on their “wish list.” They want light, a bathtub, a level not beyond third floor without an elevator, and a space where Jonas can put a desk and work without their sons, Rhone and Rockwell (“Rocky”), disturbing him (too much) — or as he put it, “climbing all over me.” All the apartments we’re visiting fit their parameters so well that their decision is sure to be tough…and that’s the whole point of the show: to keep the audience guessing until the last minute when they make their decision as to which property wins their favor.

Home and Garden Television (HGTV) is a division of Scripps Networks Interactive that broadcasts a variety of shows focused on home improvement, gardening, crafts, and remodeling. By sheer coincidence, the headquarters are in a town in which I lived for 14 years — Knoxville, Tennessee. About 100 million households (more than 80% of all households with television) receive HGTV and last year, the network surpassed CNN as the third most-watched cable channel in the U.S., just behind Fox News and ESPN.

Those who watch the show tell me they are addicted and often “binge watch.” I am not surprised. It’s easy to get caught up in the throes of the search with real people and get a thrill of the mystery of which property is chosen — can you guess which one yourself? The producers do an excellent job of building the suspense and once you’re hooked, you may want to see the world and how other people live from the comfort of your armchair.

The 24th episode in which we participated that was filmed last October finally aired last Thursday for the first time and the 25th episode we filmed in January is still “in the can” while we await news of its air dates. We don’t have a chance to see the “final cut” before it airs — it’s always a surprise to see how the many hours of filming (about 20 or so) is edited down to a mere 20-something minutes of “real” time and even getting an opportunity to see the show here in France is a challenge.

It’s easier now than it has been in the past. First of all, one must understand that the shows are not normally free videos. You cannot expect to find all the shows available for free. These are expensive productions that air on a network supported by sponsored advertising. This is their product and they are the sole distributors. However, there are several ways to see the shows from wherever you are:

1. Visit the network’s website, then click on “Videos.” You can also find them at their link for Full Episodes for any shows from France and click on that link. Some of the shows from the past are offered on their site now that they have aired on the network many times and are no longer part of their regular broadcasts.

2. Amazon.com offers many of the shows for sale by episode and season. With an Amazon Prime subscription, you can search the site and find them. You will find House Hunters International: Best of France 2009 Season 1 and out of the 10 episodes offered, six are ours!

3. If you have an Apple computer or iPad or other Apple device with the app In iTunes, search on “House Hunters International” and you’ll find about 10 seasons to purchase.

4. If outside the U.S. and you use a “VPN” — a Virtual Private Network that basically “fools” the Internet into thinking you’re located in the U.S. From that you can visit the network site and click on “Live Stream HGTV Now.” It will ask you to log into your cable TV provider — and here’s where it’s tricky: you must have or borrow access to a friend’s login. Once you’re recognized on the site, you can watch the shows live. That’s what Patty Sadauskas and I did last Friday morning at 7:30 a.m. to see the most recent episode.

5. Best of all, some of the shows are available on YouTube provided by HGTV. (Some of what you find on YouTube have been uploaded by others without the permission of HGTV.) The newest episode, House Hunters International S92E05 – Two Bedrooms in Paris April 20, 2017, is on YouTube for you to view now — so if you haven’t seen it, here’s your chance!

Happy House Hunting and Happy HGTV!

A la prochaine…
