Je Suis Sick of this Shit

As much as I’d like to pretend it didn’t happen and go on with our merry little lives in Gay Paree, it did. They did it again. They upset our world with their terrorist acts that have now taken the death toll up to 34 in a city that is only an hour-and-a-half away.

It could happen in any European city, it could happen in any city anywhere in the world and we have yet to find a way to prevent it. No amount of security, protection or intelligence seems to be able to stop the rising threats of terrorist activity. And violence against it just breeds more violence and retaliation.

I will not regurgitate the news being broadcast in media worldwide. Those details you can get on France24 or The Local or The Daily Beast or anywhere…but one report I read noted that of the 34 killed in the attacks on Brussels yesterday, there were eight French and nine Americans killed. I’ve yet to confirm the numbers, but either way, it was too many.

Regardless, the message from the Belgians and Europe-wide is solidarity and defiance. The people of Europe will not be fearful. They will not succumb to the fear, even in this time of grief.

The Place de la Bourse in Brussels is filling with chalked messages, some angry, some expressing hopes for peace. It’s Brussels’ answer to our Place de la République which I will visit later today with the expectation that there will be a renewed offerings placed there by the French.

Monuments worldwide are being lit in Belgian’s colors of red, black and yellow to show their nationwide solidarity. The Eiffel Tower was one of the first to honor the victims. The court house in Lyon, the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, the Trevi Fountain in Rome…to name just a few, all came to life in the colors of the Belgian flag.

Cartoons are going viral with messages such as Je Suis Bruxelles and images of the famous Belgian statue of a peeing boy, Manneken Pis, as the perfect symbol of resistance pissing on the terrorists’ faces. Social media is of course, awash with messages of solidarity and defiance — including “Je Suis Sick of this Shit!” The world is speaking out quite boldly!

A minute’s silence will be held today at noon Brussels time. We will all be respecting this 60 seconds alongside them, but life goes on here and Paris and is getting back to normal in Brussels. We refuse to let this change our lives, to instill fear in our hearts.

Yep, Je Suis Sick of this Shit. I’m sure you are, too. Don’t let this stop you from coming here. In fact, do the opposite. Show you are defiant and won’t let them win by making you fearful.

I’m not.

A la prochaine…
