Music In The Paris Air

Music is in the Paris air.

Just following this upcoming intensive weekend discussing and learning how to make the move to France at the Working and Living in France Conference (June 18 – 20), we Parisians, Frenchmen and visitors will be gearing up for the longest day of the year and the most melodious.

Every year for the last 23 years, France has celebrated Summer Solstice on June 21st with Fête de la Musique, a festival begun when Maurice Fleuret became Directeur de la Musique et de la Danse in October 1981 and at the request of Jack Lang to have “la musique partout et le concert nulle part” (“music everywhere and the concert anywhere”). At the time, they studied the cultural habits of the French and found that five million people, one out of two being young, play a musical instrument and they dreamed of bringing everyone to the streets to play and celebrate.

No dream now — “La Fête” is the highlight of the Summer.

This year, the theme is “Arts Numériques et Facture Instrumentale” inviting the exploration of the bond which exists between traditional instruments (organs and pianos, accordions, string instruments and woodwinds…) and the new digital instruments.

The festival has taken on such popularity that now more than 120 countries and approximately 250 cities worldwide participate. There are thousands of concerts scheduled in Paris alone…starting in the early afternoon and lasting until the wee hours of the morning…as long as the musicians are willing to play.

The way to best enjoy it? First, you can get the official program of concerts at the Web site (http://www.fetedelamusique.culture.fr), but it’s difficult as each arrondissement requires a separate search.
“A Nous Paris,” the free Métro newspaper, is the official guide for the event and will distribute 550,000 over the course of the week in about 1000 distribution points in Métro and RER stations. You can scramble to get one or do what I do every year…pick a neighborhood and walk it with friends, stopping wherever the music seems appealing. Of course, this is a bit haphazard and there are concerts sure to miss along the way, but it’s a small price to pay when there’s so much fun to be had.

My favorite neighborhood for La Fête de la Musique? You guessed it…Le Marais. From La Bastille to Place de la République all along boulevard Beaumarchais, there is music on almost every corner. In all the courtyards of the Hôtels Particuliers, including the museums and monuments, there is music. All around the Place des Vosges, Le Centre Pompidou and in every “petite place” there is music. And there is no shortage of street food vendors grilling merguez and kabobs or cafés where you can rest your weary feet over a beer or Kir.

‘Course, music is in every part of Paris, so no matter what neighborhood you choose to wander, you’re sure to catch the “esprit de la fête.”

of “Around and About Paris,” Volumes I, II and III and “Romantic Paris,” has credentials a mile long and an ability to see history in layers that never ceases to spellbind her audiences during her brilliant lectures. She has agreed give the participants of the Working and Living in France Conference a complete tour of Paris — of all 20 arrondissements — Thirza’s personal account of the past, present and future of Paris.

At the colonial exhibition in 1930, Robert Jenny had a kiosk where he sold produce from his region: salt-pickled cabbage choucroute, sausages and beer. Appreciating Parisian life and noting that the fine Alsatian products attracted the Parisians, this native of Strasbourg sought to set up business in the capital. He found just the right place not far from the place de la République, at number 39 boulevard du Temple. This was the hall where the former Victor ball was held. Did he know that this address had once been that of a Russian restaurant in 1906, then a Belgian restaurant in 1914 ?

The quarter was lively, even though it no longer deserved the reputation of «Crime Boulevard» that it had had in the 18th century, when the plays billed at the many theatres in the area mainly drew inspiration from the items in the news.
