Chaise longue de plage transat pare soleil pliable

Friends assembling the Red Transat (by Patty Sadauskas) http://www.parisonadime.comFriends assembling the Red Transat (by Patty Sadauskas)

I soaked up as much sun as I could during the few days I was in Nice, taking a couple of hours Monday afternoon to park my carcass on the “galets” (Nice’s illustrious “pebbles”) of the Baie des Anges once the Iron Man Triathlon was really over and out. The Promenade des Anglais cleaned up good leaving nary a trace of the massive event and room on the beach for sun worshippers like me.

Before I set off for Nice, I decided it was time to replace my two beach chairs and did a little online surfing for lightweight chairs that offered ease of carrying, sun protection and the ability to sit up or lie flat. The chair of my dreams was a click away at an affordable price. So after a brief click-click-click it was on its way to Le Matisse (my apartment in Nice).

The “transat” (deck chair) of my dreams arrived one week ahead of schedule, but my very kind neighbor took it in on my behalf until I arrived last Friday afternoon to retrieve it from him. The box was really big, but light. Out came the red canvas and aluminum chair in parts: seat/back (adjustable), sunshade (adjustable), wheels, bag of washers, bolts, screws and a screwdriver/wrench gadget to put it all together.

Patty Sadauskas and I were sure we could DIY. And we did, even though the instructions were in German. Pictures on the instructions and our logical, mechanical minds did the rest…until one last element that just wasn’t jiving. For the life of us, we couldn’t stretch the canvas long enough to finish securing one last bolt, try as we might. Fortunately, with the help of two big, strong men (my Niçois clients who came over for drinks), and not easily for them, either, the chair was finally in one piece and ready to rock and roll down to the “plage” (beach).

The only problem was that the chair was so big, once fully assembled, that I needed another apartment in which to store it! I tried rearranging things from one closet to another, never feeling satisfied that it had found its rightful home. Getting it down the stairs of my apartment building took a strong arm and a lot of faith. Once ready to roll, it felt like hauling a super wide load through a sea of tall grass. Hence, I opted to take my old broken chairs to the beach instead and stash the newcomer as best I could until I can find a taker for it.

The two men who put it together have first right of refusal, but if you want it, it’s yours. You must be willing to come pick it up from me directly sometime between July 17th and 27th. Email me. adrian @adrianleeds.com?subject=Red_Transat

I’m back in Paris now having left friends staying in my apartment for the remainder of the week while I welcome home my daughter later today (traveling from New York) and moderate a panel discussion this evening at the Paris Writers Workshop:

“The Personal Side of Writing”
June 27th, 6:40 p.m. to 7:20 p.m.
At Forum 104, 104 rue Vaugirard, 75006 Paris
(Métro St. Placide)

We’ll be discussing the many challenges writers are confronted with: balancing writing and family, the “day job,” money, age. Our panelists are illustrious authors in their own right:

•    Lan Samantha Chang (author, director of the Iowa Workshop and teacher of the novel seminar)
•    Kathleen Spivack (poet and writer, teacher of the poetry seminar).
•    Meg Bortin (author, journalist, blogger)

And the questions I’ve prepared to discuss are:

1.    How important is having the discipline to write regularly, and how do you motivate yourself to schedule that into your already very busy life?

2.    How do you remove distractions from your writing time? And are there “good” distractions that add creative thought?

3.    What does it mean to write in a personal way, via memoir, fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry etc.

4.    If you experience “writer’s block,” how can you “unblock” it and let the creative juices flow?

5.    What other challenges do we face on a personal level that if overcome, would improve our writing and our writing experience?

It’s free to the public, so do join us!

 Nice new Tramway celebration

Back in Nice, I’m sadly missing the opening of part of the new East-West Tramway. This Saturday, while here in Paris we’ll be ogling the Gay Pride Parade, the new tramway will arrive at Magnan. Christian Estrosi, Mayor of Nice and President of the Metropolis, along with an impressive group of officials from the region will inaugurate Tramway Line 2 at 10 a.m. Following the ceremonies and until 6 p.m., there will be an exhibition on the tramway, traveling music groups, BMX flat and Parkour bike shows, JAM live street art, an inflatable structure for kids, educational workshops on the tramway, BMX bike and street golf shows and an urban dance performances by the Backus Company. Then, to top it off, at 6 p.m. a concert begins by the Maskit Group. As part of the inauguration of the tram, the Parc Phoenix will be open for free!

On Sunday, there is even more in store, so if you’re in the Niçois region, don’t miss it. For all the details, visit the website.

A la prochaine…

In solidarity with DAF Diversity Caucus, Indivisibles France, PAGE Paris, Families Belong Together, Women’s March Global.

The Families Belong Together movement quickly spread across the U.S. following the “zero tolerance” policies of the Trump administration that led to thousands of children being separated from their parents across the southern border, with reports that they are being shipped across the country to enter the foster care system. It is unclear how children already separated will be reunited with their families. Trump’s response to the uproar has been to issue an executive order than will detain entire families with children, indefinitely. This is unacceptable. This rhetoric continues to be divisive, full of half truths and outright lies, as he continues to target immigrants, refugees and asylum seekers as criminals and people to fear.

Democrats Abroad, along with other coalition organizations in the US and overseas, call upon legislators to ensure that there is a safe, expedited solution to reunify those families that have been separated, and to offer a reasonable solution for asylum seekers and immigrants.
