Paris — A City of a Different Color

I came back from vacation to an entirely different city. Paris in August is a chameleon taking on a different shade of green and it seems to happen on the button of August 1st. I’ve come to really like it’s rather schizophrenic personality.

The streets in Le Marais are decidedly quieter. My favorite “rôtisserie” on rue de Bretagne is shut tight with a hand printed sign saying “fermé 3 août – 27 août.” Yesterday I tried to make an appointment with my haircutter, but he apologized…he’s shutting down until September 1 and is booked solid until he leaves on Saturday. “Pleeeeeze, Peter! I’m desperate to fix this mop!” The best he could do was put me on a waiting list in hopes for a cancellation.

It never ceases to amaze me how the French can willingly afford to take one-twelfth of their business income potential and snub their nose at it by locking their doors and heading for the countryside or seashore. Of course, the cycle is such that they likely lose very little since such scanty business can actually be done.

Then, there are others that take advantage of the lack of competition. Lots of restaurants stay overflowing while the others are on holiday, particularly those owned by the non-French! This is the best time of year to wallow in Asian, Indian and North African cuisine — rest assured they’re still setting the tables and serving it hot.

In some ways there is no rhyme or reason to what runs normally and what not. One August I headed to shop at Galeries Lafayette thinking it would be empty only to discover it was the busiest spot in town.

Americans who own apartments in Paris come in August because this is the one time of year they don’t successfully rent to tourists…so they take advantage of the down season. It’s the only real one there is. The upside is of course, all the American friends who are here ready to party and enjoy a casual Paris. And there is still no shortage of great things to do.

For example, tonight begins the Festival Cinéma au Clair de Lune running until August 21st — our once-a-year chance to see cinema masterpieces past and present having Paris as the subject or the backdrop…outdoors. I anxiously await the festival every year.

The films are in French, but you can catch two in their original English version with French sub-titles: “Gigi” on Wednesday, August 10th at the Jardins du Trocadéro (in front of the fountains) and “One Hour With You” on Friday, August 19th on Avenue de Breteuil, place Henri-Queuille. And this Saturday night, you can bet I’ll be at Place des Vosges to see “Cartouche” with Jean-Paul Belmondo, Claudia Cardinale and Jean Rochefort at Place des Vosges!

Be sure to scroll down for today’s Community Calendar for more information about the cinema festival and all the other great things to do in August here in the Paris of a different color.

A la prochaine…

The second home has become a real passion in spite of the serious rise in home prices, and it tends to play a significant part of dual residences more and more.

We used to believe that the tr

aditional second home was left forgotten — too difficult to maintain, too constraining in terms of the number of stays needed “to make it profitable” and uninteresting to the next generation…Read On…
