There is a good reason we call Paris the “City of Light.” Nothing is more beautiful than Paris by Night. French lighting engineers have perfected the art of illuminating their illustrious monuments, bridges, streets and shops to the point of distraction. Throughout all of Paris, the city stays lit up until midnight during the week and 1 a.m. on weekends. No one can deny that it is absolutely gorgeous. The Eiffel Tower’s artificial illuminations has been constantly revised and improved throughout the years, taking advantage of the latest innovations in lighting…from gas to electricity, incandescent lamps to neon and not forgetting the sodium lamp. Since the year 2000, 20,000 flashing lights were added for a glittering performance of lighting on the hour. To create the sparkling diamond effects, it took 20 mountain climbers every night during 3 months to complete the installation, 20,000 light bulbs weighing 8 tons, 800 strings of lights weighing 25 kilos each and measuring 18 kilometers long, 60,000 flexible clips to attach the cables, 20,000 fasteners, 3 kilometers of angle irons, 230 enclosed lighting fixtures and 30 kilometers of electrical cords plus the usage 400 kilowatts of power. This holiday season, creative lighting is part of a city-wide program titled “Paris Illumine Paris 06.” First initiated in 2004 to encourage the merchant associations to participate in beautifying the city during the holiday season, now more than 30 associations (and growing by leaps and bounds each year) have worked directly with lighting designers to create something unique for their neighborhoods. The department stores add their own festive lighting to the holiday scene. Galeries Lafayette’s Christmas tree (the world’s biggest) standing 20 meters high is adorned with over 55,000 bulbs of yellow and gold light. The store’s facades are decorated in ‘luminous lace’ dressing by Italian designer Valerio Festi where millions of multicolored lights illuminate boulevard Haussmann and for the first time, projections of light on the illuminated facades give the illusion of waves transforming Galeries Lafayette into a kaleidoscope of constantly moving images. This season, photographer Erica Simone took her digital Canon camera and tripod to some of her favorite spots in the City of Light to rediscover the city in which she became an adult and grew to love like so many other Americans in Paris. Today’s issue is devoted to the shortest day of the year in Paris and the young talent that shows us the path to ultimate appreciation of the City of Light…Paris by Night. When you come up the subway stairs to the street, you’re immediately taken miles south to another continent! The area is truly “Africa in Paris” –- you see brothers and sisters in native garb shopping, chatting and mingling – and incredibly resembles Abidjan or Dakar. On Saturday, the market and surrounding streets are extremely crowded with people who come from all over the greater Paris area to pick up foodstuffs and ingredients. For those of you who like catfish, tilapia, mullet and other fish, stop by here. If you have a taste for greens, ask for “feuilles de broccoli”… for more about markets, see the guide. The restored château, next to the church in the very center of Celles, whose bells toll three times a day, is vintage 15th-century built by the family of Dulau d’Allemans. Their name is identified in the letterpress edition of the papers of George Washington. It was a ruin until the current owner employed a master architect from the region who fully understood the character of the house, and whose investigative powers led him to find the hidden massive stone fireplaces and secret stairwells. Together they restored the 15th-century manor into a 21st-century splendor. Pictures and more details available here: /parlerparis/apartments/rentals/cellette.html ====================
