Dear Parler Paris Reader,

If there is anyone out there who believes “the French” (broad generalization) do not like “the Americans” (broad generalization), put up your dukes. “Dems fightin’ words.”

Respect and honor for Americans is absolutely everywhere these days in the City of Light, and while we all know it’s impossible to influence EVERYONE, at least the city is trying…

Tomorrow morning, Paris Mayor Bertrand Delanoë will welcome Mayor Anthony Williams of Washington, DC on the occasion of Independence Day to honor two Americans.

First at 10:30 a.m., they will unveil a portrait of Rosa Parks which has been installed at the entrance of a sports facility named Rosa Parks at Place Jean Pronteau in the 14th arrondissement (2, rue du Moulin des Lapins – M° Pernety). Rosa Parks, in case you don’t recall, was an African American seamstress and civil rights activist whom the U.S. Congress dubbed the “Mother of the Modern-Day Civil Rights Movement” for her refusal on December 1, 1955 to obey a bus driver’s demand that she give up her seat to a white passenger. Now “The French” honor her among their own compatriots.

Then at 11:15 a.m., a statue of Thomas Jefferson created by the artist Jean Cardot, in the presence of American Ambassador to France Craig Roberts Stapleton, will be inaugurated at the Quai Anatole France at the passerelle Solférino in the 7th arrondissement. Jefferson symbolizes the friendship between “The French” and “The Americans” and as the inspiration behind our declarations of independence.

Now at Le Louvre until September 18th, American artists are being honored for their ties to France in the exhibition “American Artists and the Louvre” — more than 30 master paintings by American artists to explore the development of artistic exchanges between France and the United States, showing how the Louvre has been a source of inspiration for generations of American artists, from Benjamin West to Edward Hopper. And if you really want to get a laugh, head tonight to “Pour le rire et pour le meilleur!” — the 3rd edition of “Laugh Against Racism” at 8:30 p.m. at the Zénith de Paris. On this occasion, comedians Michel Boujenah, Florence Foresti, Smaïn, Anne Roumanoff and others will gather at the effort of Ariel Wizman to make a mockery of prejudice.

History of the famous Paris Review…

Excerpt from the Writers Insider Guide to Paris
By Elizabeth Reichart

A brief overview of Paris-based publishing cannot go without mentioning perhaps one of the most significant and long-standing journals created during the postwar period: The Paris Review. As Christopher Sawyer-Lauçanno writes in The Continual Pilgrimage, “The early history of The Paris Review is in many ways the story of the Parisian expatriate literary community itself. Almost every Anglophone writer and would-be writer in Paris in the early to middle 1950s seemed to be at one time or another involved with the review, as contributor, advisory editor, or playmate.”…For more on the fascinating history of Paris publishing, see the guide…
