Dear Parler Paris Reader,

Wednesday night under the glow of the Eiffel Tower, I picnicked with friends on the lawns of the Trocadero. There were thousands of people there, possibly hundreds of thousands, just to watched Stanley Donen’s 1963 movie, “Charade,” starring Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant on the big inflatable screen.

If you’ve ever seen the film, then you know that it’s hard to imagine a movie more perfect…brilliant directing, beautiful and witty stars an amazing supporting cast (Walter Mathau, James Coburn…), perfectly set music (Henri Mancini), gorgeous wardrobe (Givenchy)…and so delightfully romantic, of course, set in Paris!

What tickled me most was that in spite of all the intrigue and fear of being murdered for $250,000 hat the pursuing war veterans were sure Reggie (Audrey Hepburn) was hiding, she was really only intent on getting Peter (alias a different name every ten minutes, Cary Grant) to marry her. But of course, it was Paris, and lovers were everywhere — in fact, the director makes a point of placing attention on couples kissing along the quais of the Seine by using the spotlights from the Bateaux Mouches where Reggie and Peter are dining.

Within the 113 minutes of the film and within just a few days of chasing from one glorious spot in Paris to another, the heroine goes from married to widowed to married again. Hey, in Paris, anything is possible!

For those of you who want to hear the straight truth about what’s possible in Paris, we’re going to be talking about “Being Single in the City of Light” and “Life with a French Man” next month on September 9th at Brasserie Les Halles in Washington, DC.

I’ll be telling tales of single life in Paris…why this is the greatest place on the planet to be single…why you can enjoy being a woman better in Paris than anywhere else…why flirting in Paris so much fun and so necessary…how easy it is to meet men in Paris…and how Paris can spice up your sex life!

As a special treat, Ruth Mastron, author of “Au Contraire: Figuring Out the French” and Vice-President of SoCoCo Intercultural will add her take on what’s life like married to a French man! Is it really married bliss once you’ve taken the plunge to join the other side?

Other formidable women you can have the pleasure of experiencing should you be in the DC area that weekend are Thirza Vallois and Kirsten Keppel. The public is invited to have dinner Saturday night September 11th with us and hear brilliant author and historian, Vallois, talk about Paris Past, Present and Future. On Monday the 13th, you can take a walking tour to savor the elegant flavor of DC’s famous Kalorama District to discover the French legacy to the nation’s capital with Kirsten Keppel, a seventh-generation DC native and passionate Francophile.

All three women will also be speaking at the Living and Investing in France Conference: Mastron on “Crossing the Cultural Divide,” a subject she is clearly expert in, Vallois on Paris and la France Profonde (she’s working on a new book about the Aveyron) and Keppel about French-speaking Washington, DC.

To reserve your place at any or all of these events, visit: /frenchproperty/conference/LIF_DC/LIF_DC_optional.html

And with romance on our minds, single or married, today’s property picks are romantic pied-à-terres, particularly on the “rez-de-chaussée” (ground floor) on gardens or courtyards. Scroll down to dream…one of these could be yours.

A la prochaine…
