“Too Much To Do In Paris, Too Little Time”

I just got an email from an International Living Reader who asked, “Can one see most of Paris in 2 days?”

You didn’t hear me LOL (laugh out loud), but I did, and responded, “You can take a bus tour and ‘see’ it — and you’ll have a great time — but to really see Paris takes a lifetime.”

And to do all there is to do in Paris takes more than 24 hours in a day, 7 days week, 52 weeks a year. I don’t think my calendar has ever been this full. Cultural events for the English-speaking community are battling for first position and vying for our attention and attendance. Just scroll down to see all that is going on for proof of the pudding…and this is just a small part of it.

A few things have really gotten me excited enough to mark them in red in my “agenda” (yes, I still use an old-fashioned French agenda that you write in by hand with a pen).

First off, Madame Bennett at the Paris City Hall couldn’t help but notice my enthusiasm when she agreed to give a special private tour of the Hôtel de Ville the first morning of the Working and Living in France Conference on June 18th to conference participants. Nine a.m. sharp we will be at their back doorstep eagerly awaiting a tour of what is believed to be the most beautiful building in Paris. What a way to kick off the conference! That night will be topped off with one of Thirza Vallois’ famous virtual tours of the City of Light: Paris Past, Present and Future, with cocktails and dinner at historic Chez Jenny. (This is open to anyone who wants to attend! So, reserve now and be a part of this special event.) For more information about the conference and all its activities, visit the site at /frenchproperty/conference/wlif/wlif_home.html

After the conference, participants can stay in the city for Fête de la Musique on the 21st. Wow! Every year, it just gets better and more fun. I find that the best spots in town for music are centered in Le Marais and between the Place de la Bastille and Place de la République along boulevard Beaumarchais.

The next few weeks are filled with literary events surrounding the Paris Poetry Workshop, Travel Writers Workshop and Writing Your Memoirs Creative Writing Seminar, among others.

Don’t miss the poetry readings by award-winning poets Cecilia Woloch, James Baker Hall and Jeffrey Greene Thursday, May 6th, 7 p.m. sponsored by Shakespeare and Company (now under the supervision of George Whitman’s beautiful young daughter, Sylvia Beach [Whitman]) at the café around the corner…Polly Maggoo, 5 rue de Petit Pont, 5th.

And if that isn’t enough, the nine poets from the workshop will be presenting their finest works, fresh with the inspiration of the City of Light, with guitar interludes by Yves Cutulic at Paris Connections Soirées sponsored by Patricia Laplante Collins on Sunday evening May 9th. Scroll down for all the details. (Patricia is a great cook and it’s sure to be lots of fun.) There is still a chance to sign up for the poetry workshop as there is one place left, so if you’re serious, email Cecilia Woloch at [email protected]

The Travel Writers are back this year and offering up some special events open to the public. Take a journey on foot with renowned Paris expert Thirza Vallois into the depths of Paris’ literary Left Bank. As Thirza puts it: “Scratch beneath the surface to probe into the souls and lives of the restless people, both high and low, who throughout the ages have never ceased to shape and reshape it.” It’s May 10th from 2-4 p.m. Scroll down for all the details under “Trekking and Tours.” There are still spots left at the Travel Writers Workshop and Writing Your Memoirs Creative Writing Seminar, not to mention the Survival French Workshops. It’s all here. Just scroll down and start marking your calendar and making your plans.

Meanwhile, the sun is out, Paris warming up, the flowers are in bloom (I know because I’m sneezing from all the pollen) and now is definitely the time to be in the City of Light.

A la prochaine…

The International Players present in English

A Midsummer Night’s Dream
By William Shakespeare

Directed by Graham Bushnell who has also directed “Twelfth Night” for the Jardin de Shakespeare in Paris. The original music is composed by John Dawkins, musical director and conductor of the Melo’men choir and the Symphony Rainbow Orchestra.

The production will be part of the festivities to celebrate the 1300 years of the town of Le Pecq and also the centenary of the Entente Cordiale.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream occupies a special place in the works of Shakespeare: its contrasting worlds of dream and reality, its mixture of high and low comedy and its lyric beauty give it a timeless appeal. This production never loses sight of Shakespeare’s original intention: to tell a good story and to entertain.

PANSY MAURER-ALVAREZ

READING/SIGNING
with an introduction by
Anne Talvaz, author of Imagines

THURSday, APRIL 22 at 7pm

“I deeply admire the intelligent and passionate poetry
of Pansy Maurer-Alvarez, with her ‘ courage that looks so light and slightly laughy’. These poems are often mysterious, taking place in dark dreams…or reacting to photos, paintings and other visuals, such as an actress glimpsed at an angle. Perhaps paradoxically, as a poet she is both distant and painfully close, chilly and burning.
This is a wonderful book that will change the reader to the bone…”-Elinor Nauen

American by birth and Swiss by marriage, Pansy Maurer-Alvarez has lived in Europe for 30 years. Her previous collections of poetry are:
Dolores: The Alpine Years, and Lovers Eternally Nearing.

WORKSHOPS AND MASTER CLASSES BY MADELEINE BARCHEVSKA

Workshop in Executive Presence

“You can rapidly improve your personal and professional life by clarifying the signals you send out to the world. This learning will bring you to that capacity.”

— Madeleine Barchevska, M.A.

Inviting You to Explore… “Behind the Mask ”

Increased confidence, clarity and impact are the results of this training. Designed for executives and top management, this is a high-performance training program which enhances personal impact, accelerates development of personal style, and minimizes stress due to time constraints.

The mask is an ancient tool of liberation. It magnifies perception and puts us in direct contact with the flow of our nervous systems and our impulse to respond to life. Both life sciences and theatre arts inform this training. It is both direct and indirect, deep and engaging, and contributes immediately to success at a dynamic executive level.

Madeleine Barchevska has developed an award-winning approach to Executive Presence training, which is profound, accelerated, fascinating, and which also gives immediate results in all areas of life. Barchevska takes the essence of artistic and scientific knowledge and custom-designs training for the specific needs of each individual within the group. This can be a memorable learning experience for each participant.

As Part of the
Ultimate Travel Writers Workshop
Special Guided Walking Tour

Take a journey on foot with renowned Paris expert Thirza Vallois into the depths of Paris’ literary Left Bank. As Thirza puts it: “Scratch beneath the surface to probe into the souls and lives of the restless people, both high and low, who throughout the ages have never ceased to shape and reshape it.

Spanning three centuries of intellectual and artistic life, Thirza Vallois will walk you from the western edge of the Latin Quarter to the heart of Saint-Germain-des-Prés, a tiny (and visually exquisite) territory where so much of it took place. We shall start from the city’s first café, which opened back in the late 17th century. And we shall find out why…,
followed by many answers to many other questions, as the neighborhood unfolds its secrets.

“Paris is a city of perpetual change, a hectic building site of destruction and reconstruction, of restoration and renovation, where fashions are no sooner created than forsaken, a city in perpetual motion whose rounds of pleasure are periodically broken by maelstroms of social fury and bloodshed and whose throbbing pulse has always exerted a magnetic power on creative minds from far and wide, who have bequeathed to the world great schools of art and thought.”

Schedule: May 10, 2004 from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m.

Contribution from a reader for HORSE-LOVERS:

“I thought you might be interested in something happening at Chateau de Versailles. If you are a horse-lover the Academie du Spectacle Equestre is worth the 7 euros to see dressage horses performing to Baroque music. The morning exhibitions show the horse and rider working together to give all the aspects of equestrian art and the preparation for equestrian performances. The afternoon show, costing 15 euros, last around an hour and includes a lovely performance of fencing by horseback, the “Longues Renes” Carrousel and the Riders Carrousel (a drill team event). All of this is done in the wonderful Grandes Ecuries, one of the world’s most magnificient royal stables, built by Mansart. After the show you can visit the stables to see the horses up close and personal. Any evening show is done during the summer months and the cost is 20 euros. For anyone visiting Versailles while in Paris, this show is a wonderful addition to the visit. The stables are located across the street from the parking lot of the Chateau de Versailles. I also spent some time in the town of Versailles and found it charming with a wonderful outdoor market on Saturday. I would highly recommend it.” Jennifer Fowler
