Après-Midi Recap
Edith de Belleville, Paris – January 2024
“The Jewish Heritage of Paris”
Edith de Belleville gave us the history of Jews of Paris in the 17th-century, a subject you will not hear often discussed, but fascinating. How the Jews were treated at this time in French history was different depending on where they came from and where they lived. There were the Sephardic Jews who came from Spain and the Ashkenazi Jews from Eastern Europe. They had their own rivalries.
After Edith’s presentation, there were a variety of questions from the attendees and you can watch and hear it all in the video of the session we recorded.
Edith is an expert of the Jewish Heritage of Paris: She taught the Jewish heritage of Paris at Paris-Est-Marne-La-Vallée University to future licensed tour guides. She often does Webinars in English about “The Dreyfus Affair: The Political scandal that rocked France.” Edith also gives guided visits about Jewish artists from Paris for the Parisian Jewish Cultural Center (ECUJE). She wrote her University dissertation about “The looting of paintings from the Jews in France during WWII.”
For more than 20 years, Edith worked as a lawyer but wanted to study her passion—Paris, and its incredible history. She decided to be a lawyer during the week and a guide on the week-ends. But she wanted to become a real guide, a professional, a licensed guide like the ones you would find at Le Louvre or Le Château de Versailles.
At 50 years of age, Edith returned to University with the goal of receiving her “Licence de Guide Conférencière.” This was not easy! But it was worth all the hard work because she studied the history of art, of France, and of Paris as well as the history of French literature.
As a Parisienne, Edith had always been interested in the stories of other Parisiennes from the past, such as Christine de Pisan, Madame de Montespan, Josephine de Beauharnais, George Sand, and Sarah Bernhardt. With the help of her Parisian editor, she was able to publish her book and share her passion for these extraordinary, inspiring women to whom she dedicated her book Belles et Rebelles.
Edith’s new book, written in English, Parisian Life: Adventures in the City of Light, is about the life of a Parisian woman who is a tour guide in Paris who likes art, literature & history. (Sound like her?)
