Après-Midi Recap
Meredith Mullins & Julien Chameroy, Paris – May 2026
Japan in Paris? Absolutely! And it was standing room only. “The Spirit of Japan,” an immersive afternoon of photography, travel, and cultural discovery, brought together a captivated audience for a journey through Japan, led by Fine Art Photographer Meredith Mullins and Author and Speaker Julien Chameroy.
The event, guest MC’d by Lisa Anselmo, also featured a surprise guest: Momoko Akita, a kimono specialist who flew all the way from Japan just for our Après-Midi. Elegantly dressed in a traditional kimono—her everyday attire, no less—Momoko immediately became one of the afternoon’s highlights.
Meredith, known for her evocative photography of Paris and her award-winning book In A Paris Moment (available at the event), has photographed all around the world. Yet remarkably, she had never visited Japan until 2024, when Julien—an expert in Japanese culture—led a small group through some of the country’s most fascinating regions and cultural treasures.
We were transported through Meredith’s stunning images and personal stories from her two trips to Japan: serene temples, stunning geishas, remote fishing villages, unforgettable meals, and her quiet moments of meditation. The photographs offered a preview of her upcoming exhibition, The Spirit of Japan, opening this September in California.
Julien Chameroy, who has devoted much of his career to building a cultural bridge between France and Japan—and who speaks fluent Japanese!—brought additional depth and insight to the conversation. He also brought his English-language photo book, Spirit of Japan, for the book signing.
Julien then introduced Momoko, who spoke (through Julien’s translations) about the art and tradition of kimono-making, as well as her extraordinary personal collection of more than 500 kimonos! The attendees were utterly enthralled, and asked dozens of questions, many for Momoko herself, her garments, and the rich traditions they represent.
By the end of the event, it was clear: for one afternoon in Paris, everyone had been transported to Japan.
