“A Lip-Smacking, Pleasure-Provoking Beaujolais Nouveau”

Le Beaujolais Nouveau est arrivé!

Every year, Beaujolais Nouveau is released at the stroke of midnight on the third Thursday of November — that’s tomorrow, November 18th. Over a million cases will be shipped all over the world and well over one-hundred festivals in the Beaujolais region alone honor the arrival of this seductive young wine, without taking into account the celebrations that will be taking place in Paris, all over France and all over the world. By the time the festival over, more than 65 million bottles (about half of the total annual production) will be distributed and drunk.

The Beaujolais region is bordered to the north by the Mâconnais vineyards, to the south by the Monts du Lyonnais, to the east by the Saône Valley and to the west by the first foothills of the Massif Central. The harvest, that started on September 11th, finished at the beginning of October under continuous sunshine and warm temperatures.

The year, promoters are claiming that “2004 is without a doubt a winemaker’s year,” meaning a year where hard work, vigilance and know-how result in really remarkable “cuvées.” The wines are “supple and very pleasant, characterized by a good balance between degree and acidity. The attack is good. The tannins are rounded. Besides its lovely sparkling ruby robe, Beaujolais Nouveau this year is fruity, redolent of fresh red fruit like strawberry, blackcurrant and raspberry, to which there is sometimes the addition of violet and peony fragrances. A lip-smacking, pleasure provoking wine.”

Beaujolais Nouveau is about as close to white wine as a red wine can be, so it makes a great transitional wine for anyone whose general preference is white wine. Beaujolais is written with an “S” because there are 12 of them and not all are “Nouveau”: Beaujolais, Beaujolais Villages (25% of the total wine production in Beaujolais), Beaujolais Crus, Brouilly, Chénas, Chiroubles, Côte-de-Brouilly, Fleurie, Juliénas, Morgon, Moulin à Vent, Régnié, and Saint Amour. Connoisseurs says it’s well worth waiting for them to mature…they wait for the Beaujolais Crus to have “done their Easter duty” (fait leurs Pâques).

I was invited to toast the new arrival at Le Barometre at the corner of rue Charlot and rue Poitou — a neighborhood wine bar that traditionally hosts a celebration, but there are wine-tastings all over Paris. Scroll down for a fairly comprehensive listing of Beaujolais Bistrots where you are sure to savor this year’s new wine.

Astro-Paris by Eric Francis
Breakfast in America
====================

France has been big news the past week, with the death of Yasser Arafat near Paris and the Ivory Coast exploding into crisis. I thought I would have a look at the national horoscope of France, set for Oct. 5, 1958, 12:01 a.m., Paris — the chart for the creation of what is called the Fifth Republic, under the leadership of Degaulle. The Fifth Republic replaced a factional parliamentary government, and put in place a strong presidency. Interesting that this change came in the midst of a crisis involving Algeria, one of the last the true French colonies, and with the Ivory Coast, now we’re seeing a kind of colonial crisis emerge again.

During the past week, we’ve had an enormous amount of intense astrology blow through Libra, and it turns out that Libra dominates the chart of France. With Venus, Ceres, Mercury, and the Sun all being in the sign of the scales, when we get a series of events — like last weeks triple eclipse of planets by the Moon — you can be sure that things are going to get interesting.

This astrology has also set the personal lives of many people spinning. Emotionally intense, unpredictable, deeply unsettling and even shocking, those born under the sign Libra, who have Libra Moon or rising have, with few exceptions, been experiencing something out of the ordinary on the emotional level of their lives. This was rare astrology; I have not seen or heard of anything like it, and this has presented opportunities for growth and awareness that will not be available any time soon.

The Sun, however, remains in the sign Scorpio; we experienced the Scorpio New Moon on Friday (precisely amidst the turmoil of the Arafat funeral). The Sun enters Sagittarius on Nov. 22. The Moon is now waxing for a very impressive Full Moon in Gemini on Nov. 26. The astrology continues to be rebellious, shocking and challenging to those who cling to security or stable patterns. The best thing you can do is move with the energy, dance with the music, and glow with the flow of electrons.

Scorpio Birthdays This Week

The time has come to stop defining yourself by what you are not and to begin defining yourself as who you are. Yes, it was necessary to strip away everything that could possibly get in the way of the subtle expression of human love, perception and kindness that you are. And you have had more than a little work to do squirming out of the perceptions that others have trapped you in your whole life. But that work is just about done; you are ready to stand in your own footsteps with more clarity, desire and sense of direction than you have in a long time. I would love to hear you say just once: I knew this was possible. I always knew I was this person.

A host of merry-go-rounds spring up all over Paris for the festive season, offering entertainment for all the family. The Manèges de Noël, with traditional carved horses and other animals, whirl around on the squares of the central arrondissements of the French capital, including Place de l’Hôtel de Ville, Place Saint-Sulpice and the Square du Temple.
Though the merry-go-rounds are designed primarily for children’s entertainment, a trip on one of these gaudy manèges is also a romantic treat for all who love the City of Light.
