A Soup Bowl of Here and There

The Andy Griffith show

Paris Is Cinema - Cinéma Le Nouvel Odéon

I missed a whole weekend of beautiful weather and massive amounts of things to do in Paris — thanks to some sort of bug that rendered me bedridden for three days. I wouldn’t wish it on anyone, not even an enemy. Thanks to Picard frozen noodle soups (the kind you pop in the microwave and eat five minutes later), friends willing to shop for me, Amazon Prime with which to watch old movies and sitcoms (when was the last time you saw The Andy Griffith Show?) plus a laptop on a lap tray, I have survived, and am on the mend.

Missing out on the myriad of events planned over the weekend didn’t provide much fodder for today’s missive, but there’s still plenty of tales to tell. I hope you don’t mind that some of today’s message is a little bit about here and a little bit about there, but all of which relates to life in France, healthy or not.

PARIS CINEMA: FRENCH FILMS WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLES

Finally! We Anglophones have an opportunity to view French films in France with English subtitles. It’s one of those little things we miss by not being in the U.S. where we can see French films without having to be fluent in French. Now’s your chance to see French films under the theme of “Femmes Filmmakers Fortnight” between September 28th and October 11th at the Cinéma Le Nouvel Odéon at 6 rue de l’Ecole de Médecine, 75006 Paris (Métro: Odéon ou Cluny La Sorbonne).

Each film will be screened once a day at a different time slot each day. i.e. 12h, 14h, 16h, 18h, 20h, 22h. Check the site and/or LIKE the Facebook page to keep up to date. Beginning the week of the 19th, you will be able to register a membership for a super-discount ticket price.

BURN, MY MAN BURN

My daughter has the Burning Man bug and has managed to attend four out of the last five festivals. For those of you who don’t know about the annual gathering that takes place at the Black Rock Desert in Nevada, then wake up and get clued in. Erica says it’s not a place her mother would enjoy because it’s a test of stamina that I might not well endure. She’s probably right about that, and even though there may be no news from her the whole week long she’s there, I don’t worry about her safety — it could be the safest spot on the planet in today’s world.

She describes it best in her recent Huffington Post article, complete with a photographic series of her “double exposures with the idea to truly communicate the far out essence of Burning Man: its symphonic chaos, its artistic grandeur and its complete LED sh*t show,” as a place where “people are encouraged to be completely themselves, meaning if you want to ride around on a unicycle naked, with nipple clamps attached to your armpits and a headdress made of dildos — you can. And you will probably get lots of hugs and maybe some free pita and hummus for it. It is the one place where you definitely will not get bullied for being a complete weirdo; you will get praised, appreciated and admired.” (Quoted from the article. Read the article and see the photos. Share it and pass it on if you are so inclined.)

STRONGER TOGETHER

Democrats Abroad - Stronger Together

The press is calling it “The Most Divisive Political Campaign in History” — but there have been others in the past with the same label. This election, more people will be voting for who they hate the least or not voting at all (which doesn’t do anyone any good). Meanwhile, it’s a fact that more expats are Democrats and as a result, there is a strong Democrats Abroad organization here in Paris and in Nice.

Democrats in Paris are convening this coming Friday night, September 16th, at 7 p.m. for a live call-in with Howard Dean, a video message from Elizabeth Warren and also give a rundown on the campaign from a Senior Clinton Campaign Official.

Seating is limited so RSVP NOW. Or, if you cannot attend in person but would like to dial in via your computer, please RSVP

9-11 REMEMBERED

Sunday was the 15th anniversary of a day none of us will forget: September 11, 2001. Too many people died that day — almost 3,000 — and the many days, weeks and years following in the name of…what?: The Islamic State Group in an effort to control us all using Fear and Terrorism.

President Barack Obama honored the victims in a memorial service broadcast worldwide, attended by both presidential candidates, Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. Are we surprised that George W. Bush, who was president at the time of the attacks, did not attend either the ceremony in New York or Washington? France24.com reported that instead, he went to church in Dallas and then attended the Dallas Cowboys home opener against the New York Giants. What can we say?

A la prochaine…
