An Eiffel Tower In A Tennessee Garden
International Living’s Calendar #23 Wednesday, September 8, 2004 ******************** [MAIREAD, THIS IS SCHEDULED FOR THE TRAVEL WRITERS COURSE AD AND I CAN’T SEEM TO COME UP WITH IT IN MY FILES. CAN YOU PLEASE PLACE IT IN HERE AND SEND THIS TO MAILE TO BROADCAST FOR ME? THANKS.] ******************** Dear Parler Paris Reader, On the plane coming over, a seat mate tells me, “Oh I love Paris. I come as often as I can. It’s how I survive living in East Tennessee.” She means nothing derogatory toward her home state — just that as long as she gets her “fix” of the City of Light, she can continue enjoying her native land. I understand completely — that was me ten years ago. Amid the purple shamrocks sits a two-foot high brass Eiffel Tower in the garden of Francophile friends. It serves as a reminder of their love for France. One of the first things they tell me is that they’ll be coming for Christmas. She’s a professor of French literature at the University of Tennessee and gave a course this past semester using Thirza Vallois’ “Around and About Paris” as the basis for the coursework, assigning each student an essay on one arrondissement. (Thirza herself is headed to Washington, DC this week to talk to us all at the Living and Investing in France Conference on just this very subject! Wouldn’t those students get a thrill to hear it personally from her?) In Walmart, America’s mega-store of bargains, I am reminded of the abundance of products available to everyone, at prices that would make a Frenchman dizzy with desire. The check-out ‘girl’ doesn’t say “Bonjour” — I have to say it to her first, and then I remember, she doesn’t speak French! At dinner out the first evening, in an Italian restaurant East Tennessee style, a waitperson approaches and says with a slight drawl, “Good evening. My name is ‘François’ and I’ll be your waiter for the evening.” I chuckle lightly and ask, “Et est-ce que vous parlez Français?” “Mais oui, Madame, ma mère est Quebecoise!” I ordered a “noisette” and he knew what that was (espresso with a dollop of milk). They tell me, “Don’t get too skinny.” Is that because thin is no longer the norm? I bring fishnet stockings as little gifts for female relatives. They ask, “Where will I wear them?” I tell them, “Anywhere. You’ll cause a ruckus and everyone will talk about you! Even ladies of 80 years old wear them in Paris. Isn’t that great?” This is how culture shock hits my first day back in the good old U.S. of A. in the lush green hills of Knoxville, where life seems idyllic for folks in their 5000 square-foot plus brick homes, massive gas-guzzling black-tinted-windowed vehicles and over-sized portions they take home in Styrofoam containers. It is impossible not to internally compare the lifestyle I once knew with the one I live now and wonder if I could fit back into what once was so native and natural. But everywhere is a reminder that I’ve turned into a square peg trying to fit in a round hole. Today I leave the foothills of the Smoky Mountains for the nation’s Capital and sister-city to Paris, Washington, DC, where I will be speaking Thursday evening about being “Single in the City of Light (And Loving It!)” at “Brasserie Les Halls,” a French-owned restaurant that didn’t change the name of “French Fries” to “Freedom Fries” as did the cafeteria on Capitol Hill. Ruth Mastron, author of “Au Contraire! Figuring Out the French,” will be joining me to talk about “Life with a French Man!” Please join us over a glass of wine — sure to be fun and full of provocative conversation! A la prochaine…(from Washington, DC)
