April In Paris And Everything’S Comin’ Up Roses! Tulips? Jonquils?

It must be the mother in me that loves to watch the trees bud, the flowers bloom and nature come to life in an array of brilliant colors every spring and summer. Paris, as urban as it is, in smoky pale gray shades and still sometimes sooty stone, still affords an abundance of parks, gardens and green space to satisfy the flora fan in all of us.

Every year, religiously, I make a pilgrimage to some of my favorite spots just to see what’s coming up…Roses? Tulips? Jonquils?

The tulips at the Parc Floral de Paris in the Bois de Vincennes are absolutely breathtaking in their brilliant colors and amazing varieties. I don’t expect the tulips to be quite in bloom just yet, but starting tomorrow, April 9th and until April 26th, there’s a special exhibition there of the fascinating world of BEES open 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. Monday through Friday, Saturday 1:30 p.m. to 6:15 p.m.

Also at the Parc Floral, “Bulbes, Secrets Surprises” is on until May 9th, an exhibition of 110 types, 700 species and varieties of 500,000 flowering bulbs. To get there, take Métro Château-de-Vincennes and walk down the Cours de Maréchaux to the park entrance.

Every June, I head to the Parc de Bagatelle for the rose garden which is filled with thousands of different varieties of roses. Until then, however, don’t miss the Salon International d’Art Floral April 30 – May 3, 2004. The city celebrates a fraternity with cities all over the world during this event, organized by the Société Nationale d’Horticulture de France (S.N.H.F.) in partnership with the City of Paris. The French claim to have the “savoir-faire” in the mastery of floral arts and who are we to argue? Nonetheless, 218 candidates have registered for 234 different competitions and come from 14 different countries: South Africa, Germany, England, Belgium, Costa Rica, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, Pakistan, Portugal, Russia, Switzerland, U.S.A.and France. You can visit April 30 – May 1 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., May 2 and 3 10 a.m to 4 p.m. for just a 3 Euro entry. To get there, take the Métro Pont-de-Neuilly and then Bus n°43 stopping at “Place de Bagatelle” or Métro Porte-Maillot to Bus n°244 stopping at “Bagatelle-Pré-Catelan.”

These are just a few things going on, but there are events in just about every arrondissement of Paris this spring.
