See for yourself. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Dear Parler Paris Reader, Culture shock has never been so pronounced throughout my two-week stay in the U.S. as it was today by an excursion to Trader Joe's in San Francisco. The line-up of cars waiting to get in to the parking lot was wrapped well around the curve forcing us to seek refuge in the lot of a nearby shopping center and walking uphill in the damp, windy cold. For those of you who are not near a Trader Joe's, it has almost 200 stores in 17 states, but I remember the first one not far from my house in Los Angeles where getting into the parking lot was equally difficult even 15 years ago. What shocked me about the visit there, (the goals of which were to buy simple, quick and easy "fixin's" for a casual party that evening at a friend's) was what can be found on the shelf... Fat Free Products - Americana personified, this grand market of what is promised to be "the best food and beverage values to be found anywhere, and the information to make informed buying decisions," is loaded with fast-food, ready-to-eat gourmet goodies including many described as "French." Everything is packaged in plastic, and looking pretty, I couldn't help but think of my local covered market, Des Enfants Rouges, the oldest in Paris (1615) with its stalls of fresh produce, fish, meats and homemade breads. With "Low Carb" as the magic words here these days, Joe appeals with Low Carb Cheddar Garlic Bread and Joe's Lows Low Carb Cinnamon Walnut Bread...the answer to a "low carb lifestyle without having to give up the bread you love so much." Tomorrow I head back to Paris, to the land of high fat, gluten filled food products in open-air stalls with no plastic wrap. It's not Trader Joe's, but that's okay...it's Paris and the real thing. A la prochaine...
P.S. San Francisco has been delightful and beautiful...I've never met so many Francophiles in one U.S. town. Hopefully we'll be back soon. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Further resources: * Stay in the heart of the Left Bank your own luxury apartment... * Can't get enough to read about Paris and France? * The Insider Guide for Novelists, Journalists, Poets, Dreamers and Doers Alike! * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * French Property Insider is an e-mail newsletter from the editors of Parler Paris.
