Young and Motivated to Moved to France
Parler Paris--your daily taste of life in Paris and France Wednesday, March 24, 2004 * * * * * * ADVERTISEMENT * * * * * * Behind the doors of a tiny pâtisserie, down a side street off the boulevard Saint-Germain, in the shade of tree-lined canals, an enchanting city of secrets and charms awaits you... Let long time expat residents show you the heart and soul of Paris, as they lead you through the secrets of Paris--arrondissement by arrondissement--so you get to know the City of Lights and enjoy it like a local. It's all in Paris Confidential. In Florida, about 130 folks came to investigate possible future escapes to foreign destinations where their investment or retirement dollars would stretch farthest or where they could have the lifestyle of their dreams. Jocelyn Carnegie and I promoted escape to France, "mais oui!," and seemed to recruit a respectable number of people who were interested in exchanging their seemingly "high standard of living" for the high "quality of life" we have become addicted to in France. In San Francisco, the 50 participants were already serious Francophiles...their decision had already been made and the question wasn't if France was the right destination, but was "how do we make the move?" The theme was "Passion" -- a look at why we had all contracted what I call "La Maladie" (the "bug"), and how we were going to satisfy the passion we all had to live a French lifestyle. Speaker after speaker extolled the pitfalls of living in France...from the difficult route to getting visas to the laws of taxation and inheritance to learning French (at our age!) to finding property to crossing the (deep) cultural divide. If it w eren't so scary, it would be downright funny. The closing message was that it's all doable and that the trials and tribulations will be easier to overcome with the knowledge they've gained and determination...and that "à la fin," it is worth it. In reflection, I was pleased with the cohesiveness of the group -- and their sincere desire to create a new life in France...younger than we anticipated and very motivated. Some had already lived in France before, others already owned property there, but wanted to learn more. One thing for sure, we all learned a lot, both from the wonderful list of professionals and from each other, too. With the success of this conference, our decision to do more is now confirmed. The next IL Live Overseas is scheduled for November 2004 in New Orleans, Louisiana, and the next Living and Investing in France Conference is scheduled for mid September (actually September 10, 11 and 12) in Washington, DC. Before that, we will be hosting a Working and Living in France Conference here in Paris June 18, 19 and 20, 2004 (in time for our participants to enjoy Fête de la Musique on the Summer Solstice June 21st). The only difference between the conferences that take place in France and those in the U.S. is that those in France will place more emphasis on "working" -- ways to find jobs or start new businesses. If you'd like to join us at any of these, drop us an email and we'll be sure to email you as soon as we confirm the dates and locations. Meanwhile, by tomorrow morning I'll be climbing back up my 70 steps with suitcases in tow, one step at a time, hoping for spring weather so I can unwrap my geraniums from their cocoon-like winter wrappings (praying they are still alive) and heading out to the market for fresh fruits and vegetables to restock the fridge (1/4 the size of my U.S. friend's, I noticed). Aah...to be back in Paris. Home sweet home. A la prochaine...
P.S. For those of you who can't come to a conference, but still want to get the valuable advice, information and professional contacts, we are still doing one-on-one consultations in our Paris office.
