Doing Business in France. Make It or Break It.

These four Japanese businessmen in their black suits and computer bags, gazing wondrously at the Arc de Triomphe and the traffic circle where 12 streets converge in a star pattern we call the “Etoile,” reminded me of the difficulties we non-French have hurdling the cultural business divide.

At the Working and Living in France conferences, there are always a few individuals with entrepreneurial spirits raring to take out their business plans and their capital bucks to realize some new and fabulous idea they have for starting a business in France. I will never forget Hat Sternstein in our first conference the Fall of 2002 when she declared she wanted to open a gourmet pet bakery. And why not? The French have more dogs than they have hairs on their heads…”Wouldn’t it be a perfect new business to start in France?” she said. Almost three years later, she succeeded, but not without tearing out most of her own hairs along the way. Last Thursday, she inaugurated “Mon Bon Chien” at 12, rue Mademoiselle in the 15th (Métro Commerce, 01.48.28.40.12, [email protected]), so be sure to pay her a visit and treat your pup to fine Franco-American pet pastry.

Parler Paris reader Nancy Szczepanski bit the bullet, moved to France a couple months ago after a seven-year stint in Japan where she taught English at the university level. She quickly registered as a “Travailleur Indépendant” (freelance worker) and started looking for clients, jobs and projects. Her methodology included volunteering where she could network, meet people and show off her capabilities (until this week, she’s been the Parler Paris Calendar Gal!). As volunteer staff at the conference, we were blessed by her ability to make a professional presentation on Learning the Language when our scheduled speaker had a family emergency just a few minutes before show-time! And now, she’s so loaded with work that she must give up her volunteer responsibilities. “Tant pis!”

I’m going over the hurdles, too, even after all these years. First, I opened a “surcursale” (branch) of my U.S. company, only to discover that once I had French residency, all U.S. profits would fall under French law, increasing my tax liabilities to France. Of course, France would love that, but my pocketbook would suffer. So, I chose to officially open a French company (effective July 1, “Parler_France, EURL”) and dissolve the branch. The time, effort and cost was not only wasted, but doubled in changing the decision. While it’s not all that difficult to do, the procedures and paperwork were cumbersome and the expense about ten times more than in the U.S. Ouch!

Hat, Nancy and I have all had advisors, attorneys and friends who have kept us on the straight and narrow path to success, with just a few crooks and turns along the way. I cannot stress the importance enough for taking professional advice or having a French friend guide you through the cultural clashes you’re sure to experience.

For a brief listing of some of our finest contacts, visit /parlerparis/services/index.html If you’re thinking of bringing large enterprise to France, then get in contact with the Paris Regional Development Agency at http://www.paris-region.fr/ard_uk/default.asp

Beware. Some ventures are more difficult than others. Some make it. Some break it. Those who succeed have a few things in common: 1) determination and will, 2) good advice and 3) willingness to take the risk without fear of failure.

A la prochaine…

P.S. If you’re more serious about investing than starting a business, now’s the time to get serious more than ever before! The dollar is stronger (1.23 today!) and inventory is limited so prices are rising and so are property values. Don’t miss the opportunity to learn all you need to know at our seminar here in Paris this coming August 10th…one day of intensive presentations related to buying, owning, renting property — in short, “Invest in France.” Condensed to just the crux of what you need to know at a one-day price, it’s a perfect opportunity for the would-be investor. Visit /frenchproperty/conference/IIF_AUG_2005/IIF_home.html for more information and to register directly online.

La Compagnie Lester McNutt presents: TREEMONISHA by Scott Joplin Opera in Three Acts Word and music by Scott Joplin Saturdays at 9:00 p.m. and Sundays at 3:00 p.m., through June 19

Théâtre Darius Milhaud 80, Allée Darius Milhaud, 75019 Paris
Métro: Porte de Pantin Call 01-42-01-92-26 for reservations

Dubbed the “King of Ragtime” by his music publisher, Scott Joplin (1868-1917) was a formally educated musician whose popular piano rags inspired him to go on to composition on a larger, far more developed scale and conception. His second opera, Treemonisha, an example of his most serious work, was published in 1911 at his own expense.< /p>

The story of a young woman who defies the facts of her social and racial background and works her way up the social ladder, trading on education and non-violence, 40 years before Mahatma Gandhi and 60 years before Martin Luther King. Needless to say that Scott Joplin’s chances of raising money to produce his masterpiece were anywhere from modest to remote.

The New York Times praised Treemonisha as gently imbued with ragtime, aspiring “to genuine operatic richness.”

A JUST PEACE FOR THE PALESTINIANS

The Democratic Party has been as inactive on ideas for peace between Israelis and Palestinians as has the Bush administration. Clearly, the issue is a thorny one. Our June event is an effort to approach the issue from a viewpoint of what would constitute a fair peace for the Palestinians while not compromising Israel’s security. It is not intended as Israel vs. Palestine, but Israel and Palestine.

Michel Warschawski, President of the Israel-Palestinian Alternative Information Center (AIC) of Jerusalem

Warschawski is an Israeli author and tireless activist for a lasting peace between Israelis and Palestinians. In 1982, during the Israel invasion of Lebanon, he was one of the founders of Yesh Gvul (“There is a Limit”), a movement of soldiers and reserve officers against the war and occupation. He has published numerous works on the issue, available in French.

Richard Wagman President of the French Jewish Peace Union (UJFP — Union Juive Française pour la Paix)

JUNE EVENTS AT THE AMERICAN HOSPITAL OF PARIS TARGET OBESITY

The American Hospital of Paris steps up to the plate in the struggle against obesity. Two free community events in June will feature speakers and provide information on preventing childhood obesity and new insights into diabetes and obesity relating to women’s health.

According to the American Obesity Association, approximately 30% of children 6 to 10 years of age are overweight and 15% are obese, higher than ever before. Childhood obesity can lead to diabetes, hypertension and other chronic diseases which were once only prevalent among adults.

Saturday, June 4th at 10 a.m.

The Second Annual Children’s day, organized by the Pediatrics Department of the American Hospital of Paris, focuses on Preventing Childhood Obesity: A Challenge of the 21st Century. Pediatricians and health professionals will be speaking on the diagnosis, cause and long-term consequences of obesity in childhood and adolescence, and will review common diet mistakes, the psychology of obese children and orthopedic issues these children may face.
Admission is free and seating is limited so advance reservations are required. The lectures will be in French and English, with simultaneous translation.

Obesity plays a significant role in causing poor health in women, negatively affecting quality of life and shortening life span. More than half of adult U.S. women are overweight, and more than one-third are obese. Prevention and early treatment of obesity are crucial to ensuring the health of women of all ages.

June 23rd at 4:00 p.m.

The Hospital’s Foundation is sponsoring the Eleventh Annual Iris Cantor Women’s Health Lecture, Robin Goland, M.D., a nationally recognized endocrinologist and leading expert on diabetes and obesity, will give a lecture titled, Weigh Less! Live Longer! New Ideas in the Treatment of Diabetes and Obesity.
Dr. Goland is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons and an Associate Attending Physician at NewYork Presbyterian Hospital The lecture will be delivered in English with simultaneous translation into French. A cocktail reception will follow.

The lecture is free and seating is limited, and advance reservations are required.

Both events will be held at the American Hospital of Paris Conference Center in the Florence Gould Pavilion.
