Eye on Paris by JR

The first time to have encountered his art was during La Nuit Blanche in 2009 when his enormous photo installations from his “Women are Heroes” project were pasted onto the borders and bridges of the Seine and a video of his works played at one of the all-night venues. JR (JR ART) is described by Wikipedia as a photographer and artist, but he describes himself as a “photograffeur.” By any name, he began as a young street artist on the cobblestones of Paris (after finding a camera on the subway), which he states is “the largest art gallery in the world.”

My daughter became acquainted with him and it was in New York at her own exhibition this past April that I met him in person. As is my bad habit when meeting someone greatly admired, I blubbered all over him like a pathetic fan. He fled the scene as there were many others wanting to give him so much attention. This past May, the TED Prize winning artist opened an installation piece from his project “Inside Out” at the Centre Pompidou — a photo booth were you could share your personal story and image with Inside Out. (See Parler Paris past issues: Parler Paris 25-5-11 and Parler Paris 11-7-11)

JR is back in Paris, this time with an installation at the Perrotin Gallery on rue de Turenne (number 76). It opened Saturday at 4 p.m., but by 7 p.m., you couldn’t even get into the courtyard for the hoards of people and the line to enter the gallery was a mile long. Friends meeting me for the “vernissage” (opening) didn’t have a chance of getting in. I watched actor and friend of JR’s, Vincent Cassel, manage to sweet-talk his way in with ease. Fortunately for my friends, one of them who had confused the dates and gone to the gallery two days in advance, actually managed to photograph JR himself installing the huge image on the façade of the 17th-century “hotel particulier!” “Quelle chance!”

Go see the show – on until January 7th, 2012: Galerie Perrotin, 76 rue de Turenne, 3rd, Perrotin Gallery

A la prochaine…
